NOS Dooling 61 1947 f-model tether car on the trailer made by kelly's dad 1979 shovelhead #120 - Авто та транспорт
Beautiful little piece of history. My father won the the National Championship for class C, U-control speed planes twice, in the mid 1940s. He was flying McCoy engines, until he saw how fast the Doolings.61 was making these cars go. He went to Dooling with his idea, to put one in his speed plane and they gave him a dyno tested motor. That engine, mounted in his radical new aluminum plane, smashed the Class C World Speed Record at 155.11 in 1946... the year I was born. His plane was smaller than traditional speed planes of the day, and to reduce the frontal area, he cut off the motor mounts and used the screws that held the front plate on the lower end to mount his engine to a radial flange that was machined into the aluminum fuselage's front end. The fuselage's rear end was thin, hard aluminum sheet metal riveted to the front with flush head rivets. The wings and tail pieces were also thin sheet with flush head rivets. Dooling provided him engines and paid his travel expenses to events. I donated his plane to the AMA Museum in Muncie Indiana when he died.
all those tricks still work today. more power in a smaller packages means more speed.

I'm building a full bodied shifter Kar-t with two water cooled, Yamaha VR-150, 2 stroke engines in the Thai jungle right now. It has 6 speed gear box. When I was a kid in Long Beach in the 50's there was a restaurant on our block named Tatro's. It was good.@@TatroMachine
The Dooling 61 engine was a top power plant in its day, along with the McCoy 60....The Dooling usually had the edge in power output.
I think I first saw one in about 1955 or 56 in a control line speed model....... Unusual to see the spark ignition version; most of them were glowplug ignited on methanol and nitro..... The Dooling especially loved nitro and really sang on 30-40%.....
Really cool stuff don't see stuff like that today
we used to start them with an upside-down bicycle wheel
That is Sooooo Cool,,, Never know what to expect at Tatro Machine...!!!!!
The evolution of the Cox Airplanes we had as kids. This guy sounds like Steve-O from the Jackass show.
It's a motor similar to probably millions made in those days by Cox, Atwood, Fox and others. You could see the pistons in all of them and their carburation was all similar and that would be wide open with no restrictions. We used to fly U-control airplanes with these motors, most of which would survive multiple crashes in which the balsa wood and tissue airplanes would be completely destroyed. We had more fun and gained more engineering, artistic and mechanical knowledge than kids today get exposed to in a lifetime.
Only the trailer is home made, and it's a nice one.. The car is a Dooling F.
I saw their name on the tires too. The camera went past very quickly. Los Angles was
where the factory was, not the brand. Dooling was the "king" of the tether cars. It is
worth much more than $3500.
That car is probably the same age age as the Quonset hut you are working out of.
We need to hear it run, though.
cool
Somebody's dad was a real craftsman. This is a one of kind for sure. My question is by tether car do you mean tethered to a string like airplane models used to be?
Yes, that is what he means. A tractor show in my area runs these cars at the show. Very neat indeed. So can see them at the Portland, In spring show.
Have to get a Speed racer figurine and pop him in that bad boy. On 2nd thought, I think a 40 Ford truck would look better, but may have to go with a chevy since by looking at the LH exhaust, it my be powered by an old stovebolt 6 banger.
That is a Doolin .61 cubic inch ( 10cc ) ignition engine ( I think I could see the spark timer behind
it ) That is a coil not a magneto. DO NOT START IT..it's value will drop greatly, you will never get
it that clean again.
Tatro would i drag race a atc 250r i want to have it built up some more port an polish new stroke complete build for 300ft sand drag any thing you be into love to have some tatro power up here in Maine thanks
not going to happen, harleys only.
tatro
@@TatroMachine ok thank you
What is the pulling rig for this outfit, a 32 ford truck? Lol
hes a screw breaker lol
If that was a magneto it would not have a provision for a battery.
That is a tether car and not a tether rocket 🚀
So many jokes Tatro
Waste my time, waiting to hear it run
Jade, that car would drop $1000 in value if it was cranked up ( it would be great to hear
though )...
@@frogman8591 oh, ok. No joke?
My bad, didn't know that.
