Even more impressive that most brits cannot speak English properly let alone a second language like the rest of the planet.

Well the second language part isn't entirely our fault. We didn't tell so many people to learn english. It only happened because of the influence and appeal of america. Plus once everyone knows english, what's the point in learning a second language if you're British?

His accent is NOT bad. Obviously he has an accent but he is clearly understood. His diction is spot on even if he has an accent.
I remember when he played in Spain. One of the very very very very few british players in Spain who assimilated and liked the culture and language.
Most german and dutch players in Spain learn the language in less than a year but somehow, british players struggle with learning languages.
Beckham and Bale were lost causes.
And I cant complain much. I spent 10 years in The Netherlands working and I never learned the language. Shame on me.

I think every Individual in the world should strive to speak at the very least two languages. The world is becoming more globalized it will always be useful.
Most people in former African colonies can speak two languages, sometimes even more

We Indians from a young age speak atleast 3 languages hindi,our local language and English and in my case also Portuguese

Oh come on, he was reading that from an auto-cue. Even in English his discussion came to a grinding halt when the auto-cue packed up. He couldn't even ad-lib an introduction for the forthcoming match highlights !
Check out his documentary with Maradona he speaks fluent Spanish, he lived there 3 years ffs, you couldn't fail to learn, working with Spanish people and he has always had a property there.. I lived n worked Munich 2 years, I speak fluent German and I last worked there in the 90s Lineker speaks Japanese too

Garry and Steve Mc Manamon can speak Spanish very well
Ronaldinho spoke Portuguese, the same as Cristiano Ronaldo. The difference between the two languages is minor development on accented words. They have no problems communicating. Whereas English > Spanish... I think you have to learn.

muy bien gary, most british players are too stupid to learn the language abroad (rush, mcmanaman, beckham etc) though I think Wilkins managed italian, and you'd imagine Trevor Francis did too.

Bollocks. Hodgson can speak 5 languages, Hargreaves can speak German, Gascoigne can speak Italian, Beckham CAN speak Spanish but not that well apparently. Lampard can speak Latin and he is believed the smartest footballer in the world and where is he from?

You don´t need to speak a language to say a few lines. You can read them.
On that interview, the person who is talking to him is speaking slowly otherwise he wouldnt undertand.

The accent is pretty bad, the pronunciation decent, it is understandable. It is a better effort than most native English speakers.

@@So1asola more specifically his vowel sounds are too long. I have an Australian accent but when I try and speak another language I try and mimic their sounds exactly, inclusive of the accent. This makes it sound much more familiar for native speakers.

Why does the BBC think we need a translation? Yes, we can't all speak the language, but it's not that hard to decipher based on context.
Of course, we all must be thick, unless we're employed by the BBC.

He played for barcelona and in a bbc segment he travelled to argentina dined with maradonas family. He had to speak in spanish. You cannot a teleprompter there mate
