    Screening Wed 8 Apr
    Session times: bit.ly/2V8NOB5
Experience the gorgeous new restoration of what many believe to be Satoshi Kon’s (Perfect Blue, Paprika, Tokyo Godfathers) greatest work, MILLENNIUM ACTRESS.
When the legendary Ginei Studios shuts down, filmmaker Genya Tachibana and his assistant are tasked with interviewing its reclusive star, Chiyoko Fujiwara, who had retired from the spotlight 30 years prior. As she recounts her career, Genya and his crew are literally pulled into her memories where they witness her chance encounter with a mysterious man on the run from the police. Despite never knowing his name or his face, Chiyoko relentlessly pursues that man in a seamless blend of reality and memory that only Satoshi Kon could deliver. Boasting countless awards, including the Grand Prize in the Japan Agency of Cultural Affairs Media Arts Festival, which it shared with Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away, MILLENNIUM ACTRESS is a must-see for anime fans of all ages.

The animation of Satoshi Kon with the music of Susumu Hirasawa is one of the most divine combinations possible

It's amazing to me that Satoshi Kon was known for creating dark and thought provoking movies about the ugliest sides of humanity. Yet among them he was able to create an uplifting movie that was more empowering over oppressing. I always wish could've made more movies to show how vast his creatives skills were in both animation and writing. The modern landscape of movies could use more people like him.

Of all the animated movies I have watched, this movie has moved me the most. I have watched it around 10 years ago and was impressed by the story, animation, soundtrack and emotions. It's a movie I keep close to my heart.

This and Perfect Blue are already two of my favorite films ever made. I only heard about Satoshi Kon this year after getting into anime movies. But it’s never too late to witness his incredible filmography.
I of course love these two movies on their own. It’s just the way they are connected by Kon saying they are like “sisters” is what keeps me obsessed with them.

Satoshi Kon-sensei was truly a master
All of his movies are masterpieces, his one anime was great showcase of stories he always wanted to tell, and even the other projects he worked on are amazing.
Whether is be his script on the first segment of Memories, Magnetic Rose; his work on the legendary Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure OVA(yes, I am not joking), his contribution to the legendary film Akira and so on.
I still remember the day when it was announced he had passed away and I felt like I had lost a great friend too soon.
I had not seen any of his work till that point but I knew about him and just from interviews from anime magazines(yes I’m that old) and looking at the various stills of scenes from his movies, they had a very unique feel and he loved what he created. And due to anime distribution companies here in the states we’re starting to disappear, I was scared that all of Satoshi Kon’s work would be lost forever
But now, all of his movies, his one anime series, and most of his other work is widely available for all to experience and too keep his memory alive for generations to come

I believe Kon could have topped Miyazaki if he was still alive. It’s scary to think how Kon passed away at a young age, but is considered one of the greatest directors ever made with only a decade worth of filmography. With the influence he had on Hollywood. And with his work being way ahead of it’s time. It makes me wonder what he would have make if he were still alive today.

Shit ...... finished reading it. The whole thing is Buddhist. Discovered that life is actually very simple. Just a human body, eat, drink, sleep. Then added a bunch of uncountable le society consumer goods capital media world...actually life is that simple. And then a million little things were added. But the real joy, or that never-ending to the heart of some bottomless hole without ceiling goal to go a little 🤏 update progress pursued. It's just that the years are too wasted on people. If that goal is destroyed by the years, is only a goal to eat youth, then it is too cruel and helpless to do anything 👐 unbearable to the extreme ...... and then the Buddha. Goals can only be set the kind of goals that people can continue to pursue even as they grow old to be immortalized. As a complete story, surely many people give it a bad review. But as an art 🎨 embodiment of the human quest, and then the years wasting away as endless resistance to fight, that is very extremely successful.
Just like the 🐰 that is heading for the sky, being about to be smashed in the head with a pot lid coming from the sky, but the 🐰 is still stubborn and unyielding to fly to the sky. That extreme confrontation of disobedience, and the survival of the goal, also particularly reflects the simplicity of life, but also the longevity of where the life force comes from. It is the savage growth that keeps on going on and on to reach the goal. That is the ultimate joy. From a life of poverty becoming fun. And not some fast food consumer entertainment...screwing up and then being empty. It's a lifetime of screwing and mining. Vitality is defying old age, defying decay, defying a body that will gradually weaken, vitality...true quality play, but the pursuit of eternity.

This film honestly has a kind of subliminal effect...[laughs and cries R] I was impatient watching it at twice the speed, used to like the fast pace, and after the adequate pace I was able to focus 100% on the film, it felt like the film also flowed fast, kept switching scenes, kept the life story. ...like a mirror that resides in my mind...and should be more relatable the more life experience one has, the difficulty in resonating as a child is the lack of life experience. That's why there's some more magical feelings. Again, a thousand readers, a thousand Hamlets. [laughs and cries R] No need to see it like I do. (It's probably because it's sped up and things go by so fast that I don't stay with specific characters, costumes (some people love the designs in them and focus on pretty designs), that I can arrive at an entire life, as splendid as a walk, on the hoof. ...
All in all, you can have a very different experience as well. This kind of sword and sorcery film is definitely something that will polarize the review sensibilities. [laughs and cries R]Anime is low age oriented, but this piece instead gets more and more experienced (age years accumulate) and flavorful. It's like seeing a mirror 🪞, looking at her inside, but mentally full of their own life history mapped, my knowledge base is not enough [laughing and crying R] to perfect my expression, using a word that does not fit to describe "montage" assembled, but this is a constant timeline, a little different, but also assembled a life. But it's also assembling a life, "the way it should be," the way the author ≈ endless pursuing
