  • How are we going to fix our potato harvest in the fall?
We will have to go back to the drawing board this coming fall when we do our Fall run of potatoes. This is the second time we have done potatoes in tubs and will probably be our last.

    Not first. Don't care.😂
    Nice tater haul!
I must have been absent the day you taught why and how to use your compost tea.
I know exactly how potent the smell of rotting vegetation is.
It's like how a rotten potato and a rotting mouse carcass smell exactly the same and you never forget it.
My grand daughter was with me at the grocery store and she saw me pick up a bag of potatoes and smell of them.
She asked me why I was smelling the potatoes so I told her if there is a bad one, you'll know it.
Say hello to your Mama and Daddy for me.
Give Pat a 🤜 for being so much help around the farm, for me.
    ☮️💕🙏🇺🇸🇮🇱🇺🇦✝️✌️

I will probably try another crop in the fall, but they were an epic fail for the Spring in containers. - Rick

Sorry it was not everything you hoped but they still will be some good eating there! We never tried layering them. We tried containers our first year but they held to much moisture. Second year we tried in the ground but too many rodents. We are trying raised bed this year! The more you try the more you know! Keep growing! 🤍🕊😃

This is the last season I do the potatoes in smaller containers. I think the problem is multi-factorial. 1. Too much water and 2. the temperature of the soil is too warm. Even in May the soil temp is already into the 90's. By direct planting in the ground next year, I think we can probably address both issues successfully. Thanks so much for stopping by and watching. - Rick

fill bucket up, mixing some sand int it but not much, for increased drainage.. Mine the drain hole is 3/4 inch at side, using male into female elbow to recapture excess water to all buckets into a barrel that is buried at one end of row..lol.. some gravel at hole area helps keep dirt in bucket instead of in water barrel. no glue on fittings. Anyway- push single potato into bucket, about up to knuckles.. not very deep, about the potato itself doubled- the roots then wander down and around and will give you around 2.5 lbs per bucket in 110 days roughly..lol.. Save hilling for the in ground instead of buckets.. Oh, and if tomato looking stuff comes up, I usually have extra buckets from my radishes or pakchow by then o I just start new batches using them pushid in just a bit.. ad give them around 130 days due to how green they were..

Might need to put the potatoes under a clear plastic "roof" to keep the extra rain off?? What variety did you plant? 1st and 2nd earlies grow all the potatoes on a single level. So those you can fill the bucket up from the start. Only main crop potatoes can benefit from hilling them up. You can try again in fall for a 2nd harvest.

They were Kennebeck white potatoes. I think it is a combination of the soil getting too hot in the bucket and moisture. I put them in the refrigerator and am going to use them for seeds for the Fall planting. - Rick

@@TheLaLaFarm Good plan. Maybe more peatmoss or coir is needed in the mix. ?? or a lot more perlite. I'm sure you can dial in the right mix ratio for your growing conditions

@@TheLaLaFarm I watch here on UA-cam an old UK gentleman whom plants potatoes in 10" pots(one per pot). He's averaging about 2 pounds a pot, regardless of the soil type used. He's even used forrest floor wood chips, leaves and top soil. I'd venture to guess, you got about 2 pounds. The UK gentleman also plants several pots with potatoes, along with onions, shallots, carrots, etc. One bucket, will hardly due. He's got 30-40 pots.

I wonder if the soil is too warm. Maine, New Hampshire and Idaho used to be major potato states. Just a thought. I don't know. I might be way off.

Patrick, "I can drag out the big tractor." 🤣🤣🤣
The tater that was planted is the one you pointed out as rotten for the most part. It should be rotten. It will always be at the base of all the roots off the one tater that was planted.
It is successful in that you got some food out of it. Better than none for sure
It's not the water, hilling or climate. It is in timing, container and too much love. In the Irish culture taters once were just a poor man's food which later became something more than a poor man's food, but both classes could enjoy it just the same. That said, that stigma of being a poor man's food really stuck. Originally growing taters was a shame. Something any self respecting Irishman would never be seen eating much less than growing. Well, long story short everyone had to rely on the humble tater and everyone hated it just the same. It thrives on lack of love. Just sayin'.
(And, yes, I am Irish decent and have first hand hearsay knowledge.") 😉
