Remembering a show where Suresh Wadkar mentioning this with teary eyes. The song was recorded in Mumbai. After the song recording was over all the musicians kept their musical instruments down and gave few minutes of standing ovation to IlayaRaja sir which Suresh said he has never seen happening before for any of the recordings.
It happened again in 1992 and this time too the music director is none other than Ilayaraja sir. Thalapathy recording happened in Mumbai and the song was Sundari Kannal oru sethi, arguably the grandest composition ever made (other grand compositions will still belong to Raja sir only). SPB has mentioned this so many times and he fondly remember how the musicians complained that night on the difficulty that they face in playing Raja sir's notes.
There is one musician who is unparalleled and the name is Raja. Raja is a phenomenon.
Nicely put, another way to say is he is an music eco-system. Survives by itself, nurtures and norishes living things. Similarly he creates music, makes movie a hit, musicians, producer's, actors, directors, studios, cassette/DVD/digital music companies, orchestra fellas(non filmy), make their livelihood on his songs and background scores. And finally we consumers(the listeners) who play his music for all possible human emotions.

This is the ignorance of this country, these fellas always say it's Kishore da song, Rafi song, spb song, non sense. It's the composer's song, it would be sdb naushad, or s-j or l-p or mm or K-J or Illaiyaraaja song. Not the singer's song, wat has wadekar brought in here. Just remove the tune and the unparalleled orchestration out of this song, than wats, left of this, lyrics and voice, and where wil u put them, u need a template, and that's tune, this tune makes you to come and listen to this every time. A lyricist or singer do not bring much credit to a song, just 5 percentage each. You put his song in instrumental music, you could still keep listening innumerable times. This Indian film fuckin scenario. If not for these actors mimicking the song, we wouldn't be having these kind of scenario, where it is called singer's song. Thank at least in North they say it's singer's song, in South these dumb, say it's heroes song...thoo..in logo'nko ek hassmukh mooh Chahiye, and he should be as well, singing, fighting, romancing....wotha , Avan manushana robo'va. Every song is composer's song. Till date it is Elvis Presley song, even if it is used in movies. We Indians suck in understanding every simple thing.
What a song! For most of Ilayaraja's songs he took under an hour to write the score, with notes for each instrument written separately as it occurred to him and copied by assistants and musicians and rehearsed. The magic happens when finally recorded. In many interviews his musicians have said they become spell bound when playing with the whole orchestra and listening it for the first time (no mixing separately those days and most musicians these days do not know for which song they are playing for). Ilaiyaraja said in one of his rare interviews that he is unable to write the score fast enough as the ideas come to him as he does each instrument at a time. Every single note you hear in every single instrument is written by him and no changes are allowed. Musicians have to play exactly what has been written. I am personally a big fan of his bass lines which I think is outstanding and takes the song to a different level. For those who are not aware, Ilayaraja is a gold medalist in Classical Guitar from Trinity College of Music, UK and was a leading session guitarist for many composers in the early 70s including Salil Chaudhry, Naushad, GK Venkatesh before he started on his own. Many of his compositions are now covered by leading bass players like Aalap Raju ( ua-cam.com/video/utyejItFfRU/v-deo.html) where one can appreciate the intricacies of the bass guitar with counter point notes to the melody note.

This song touches the right chord and breaks open every kind of pain that one has hidden deep inside them for ages. This song is not about just feeling the music, lyrics or voice. It is beyond that. It is about experiencing that aspect of existence which impinges the strongest pain in you yet liberates you from it and makes you light and peaceful. It is not music, it is not silence, it is something in between the two. Very profound yet subtle too.

(Edited: This TUNE was COMPOSED AFTER Gulzar wrote the lyrics. He seems to have said he could not fit his lyrics for the tune of Poongaatru pudhidhaanadhu and IR changed the tune for Gulzar's lyrics!!! GENIUS is an understatement). PRELUDE & INTERLUDES are unique to Bollywood! Have always felt that Suresh Wadkar's vocal talent has been wasted in Bollywood. His voice is very soft and sounds feathery. BEST performance by Kamal Hassan & Sridevi (her BEST in Bollywood, thanks to BALU Mahendra's superb movie). Gulzar's lyrics are meaningful.
