I know this is random, but there is a song by Spinvis. "Voor ik vergeet." It is Dutch, but I have heard from people that they can feel the meaning of his song, despite not understanding the lyrics. It is about a man that wants to mention the things he hopes never to forget. The holiday on the beach, where they lost a bucket, the moment he put a peppermint up his nose as a kid, the way he felt when he thought everything was in place, etc. I always cry when I hear it, it is really sweet.

Adam could have followed his own inspiration on music, keeping making beautiful art just as he did between 2007 and 2011. Instead, he sold himself to the mainstream and to what the average listener wants. And he failed. Miserably. It makes me feel kinda bad.

Where was I when the rockets came to life, And carried you away into the alligator sky? Even though I’ll never know what’s up ahead, I’m never letting go, I’m never letting go! Uh uh, that’s not a plane, that’s me, I’m sittin’ where I’m s’pposed to, Floatin’ on the cloud, can’t nobody come close to, The concrete and the sky switch places, So now my ceiling is painted with cosmic spaces, Firecracker to the moon, Keep your eyes shut, Blastin’ off like a rocket from the ground up, (Heh) I used to catch a cab on the Monday. Now the taxi’s sellin’ lights on the runway, Fly, condo on the Milky Way, A house on the cloud and God’s my landlord, And for my rent all I pay is my drive, I got that. So if you need me you can find me in the alligator sky. Where was I when the rockets came to life, And carried you away into the alligator sky? (Into the alligator sky) Even though I’ll never know what’s up ahead, (Heh) I’m never letting go, (Uh uh) I’m never letting go! Makes you kind of emotional when you realize this can and will happen some day. We can find new planets to thrive on, but Earth gave birth to us. It's like saying goodbye forever to your mother.
and this is why I love Adam's music. I mean, we're watching a video of people leaving earth forever, but if you pay attention to the video and the scenery, it's not a sad horrible apocalypse that happened. In fact, it's like they're throwing a party, they make it happy, and that's what every one of his songs are about, joy and innocence to the deepest core. Embrace the innocence that you have left and look at everything with wonder.
[Chorus: Adam Young] Where was I when the rockets came to life And carried you away into the alligator sky? Even though, I'll never know what's up ahead I'm never letting go, I'm never letting go [Verse 1: Shawn Crystopher] Uh uh, that's not a plane, that's me I'm sitting where I'm supposed to Floating on the cloud, can't nobody come close to The concrete and the sky switch places So now my ceiling is painted with cosmic spaces Firecracker to the moon, keep your eyes shut Blasting off like a rocket from the ground up Heh, I used to catch a cab on the Monday Now the taxi's selling lights on the runway, fly high Condo on the milky way A house on the cloud and God's my landlord And for my rent, all I pay is my drive Got that, so if you need me, you can find me in the alligator sky [Chorus: Adam Young] Where was I when the rockets came to life And carried you away into the alligator sky? Even though, I'll never know what's up ahead I'm never letting go, I'm never letting go [Bridge: Adam Young] Rollercoaster through the atmosphere I'm drowning in this starry serenade Where ecstasy becomes cavalier Imagination's taking me away Reverie whispered in my ear I'm scared to death that I'll never be afraid Rollercoaster through the atmosphere Imagination's taking me away [Verse 2: Shawn Chrystopher] Uh, now I'mma dance like I never danced Sing like I never sing, dream like I've never dreamed Or-or tried to, because we've been lied to That the sun is something that we can't fly to Well, I sit on my star and see street lights Look up, ha, you'll miss me if you blink twice Imagination is high and if you got it you can meet me When you see me in the alligator sky [Chorus: Adam Young & Shawn Chrystopher] Where was I when the rockets came to life (Boom) And carried you away into the alligator sky? (Into the alligator sky) Even though, I'll never know what's up ahead (I never know) I'm never letting go (Never letting go) I'm never letting go (Owl City) Where was I when the rockets came to life (Keep your eyes shut) And carried you away into the alligator sky? Owl City songs make me travel in time and feel so nostalgic, damn. ;-; I remember myself listening to this after school with twelve years and listening to fireflies when i was ten...good fellings
This song is obviously about the dead pet of Adam, his alligator! that is what "alligator sky" means, it's the heaven of alligators! and in the choir when it says "i'm never letting go" he is talking about his feelings that he can't accept its death. and the thing about rockets is that everyone in earth loved that alligator and they wanted to be with it so they began looking for the alligator heaven!! YEAHHHHH!!! I totally NAILED IT!!!
why are you lying ? this is from Adam`s facebook page: Another highlight is the first single, “Alligator Sky,” which features Los Angeles rapper Shawn Chrystopher. “’Alligator’ and ‘sky’ are two words that don’t really go together, but conjure up an image, which fits the idea of the song,” Young says. “It’s about how there are so many weird things coming at you every day. Why not just meet them head on and take charge even though you have no say over what’s going to happen? You and those around you are what matter most.”
It's just so sad to think about that no one is making this type of songs anymore this is more dreamy and meaningful that makes people like myself who appreciates music so much that can be inspired and be up lifted by the lyrics oh how good the old times was.
Here's an in-depth analysis of this masterpiece. TL;DR Alligator sky refers to "Fake sky". Just like alligator tears reffer to "Fake tears". So when you watch the music video, you will see that this song takes place in the future, where the air has aparently been so poluted that people are wearing spacehelmets to filter the air (This is shown on a bilboard in the background of the music video). In the music video, the newspapers are saying that there has been a festival in New York, where 1 million people gathered there in memory of earth. This is most likely why Shawn is there. Now, the song is referencing the "aligator sky", but what is all about? Well you know what alligator tears are? It's what we call fake tears. The alligator sky, is the "fake" sky, because in this post-apocalyptic future, what we used to call the sky isn't the sky anymore, everyone has evacuated to space. You will notice that Adam is singing about someone who has left the planet with the evacuation rockets, but decided to stay on earth himself, regretting woefully that he wasn't at the rocket launch to say goodbye to his special someone: "Where was I when the rockets came to life, and carried you away, into the alligator sky?". Adam, knowing that life on the poluted earth will not be easy, decided not to leave the planet: "Even thought I don't know what's up ahead, I'm never letting go". Adam can now only imagine what it's like for his friend up in the aligator sky, aka space. Also, if you listen to the version without rap, you can notice that what he's singing, can be interpeted as advice to his friend going into space, aswell as what he imagines that life is for him now. Looking at the video, Adam's making a living on earth by recording everything on the planet, and he's decided to stay behind even though his special someone has left. At first I thought this person was his wife, but then the rap came, sung by a guy. So I'm assuming Adams special someone was his best friend, here the roll played by Shawn. Shawn sings about how his life in the alligator sky (in space) is. In the video, Shawn has aparently come back for that Earth Appreciation festival, and the video takes place the day after that party-night. Shawn has not left the planet yet, even though everyone else has/is. Shawn seems to be searching for someone. Most probably his best friend Adam. They find each other, and at the end when Shawn and Adam sings together, Shawn is trying to talk to Adam, but Adam can only think about the regrets of not leaving with Shawn so many years ago. It's actually much deeper than we see at first glance.
Where was I when the rockets came to life, And carried you away, Into the alligator sky? Even though I'll never know what's up ahead, I'm never letting go, I'm never letting go! Uh-uh, that's not a plane, that's me! I'm sitting where I'm supposed to, floating on a cloud, can't nobody come close to! The concrete and the sky switch places, So now my ceiling is painted with cosmic spaces! Firecracker to the moon, keep your eyes shut! Blastin' off like a rocket from the ground up, Heh, I used to catch a cab on the Monday! Now the taxi's sellin' lights on the runway, Fly high condo on the Milky Way. A house on the cloud and God's my landlord, And for my rent all I pay is my drive! Got that so if you need me You can find me in the alligator sky! Where was I when the rockets came to life, And carried you away, Into the alligator sky? Even though I'll never know what's up ahead, I'm never lettin' go, I'm never lettin' go! Roller coaster through the atmosphere, I'm drowning in this starry serenade! Where ecstasy becomes cavalier, My imagination's taking me away! Reverie whispered in my ear, I'm scared to death that I'll never be afraid! Roller coaster through the atmosphere, My imagination's taking me away! Uh, now I'mma dance like I never dance, Sing like I never sing, dream like I never dreamed! Or try to, 'cause we've been lied to, That the sun is somethin' that we can't fly to! Well, I sit on my star and see street lights, Look up, ha, you'll miss me if you blink twice! Imagination is hot and if you got it you can meet me When you see me in the alligator sky! Where was I when the rockets came to life, and carried you away, Into the alligator sky? Even though I'll never know what's up ahead, I'm never lettin' go, I'm never lettin' go! (Prove it?)It's a fundamental trait in our human nature, Man must explore. Where was I when the rockets came to life, And carried you away, into the alligator sky? Even though I'll never know what's up ahead, I'm never lettin' go, I'm never lettin' go! In the alligator sky In the alligator sky In the alligator sky(In the alligator sky) In the alligator sky...
I just got the All Things Bright And Beautiful album this year (yeah, I know, hopelessly behind the times). I found this collaboration incredibly pretty and wanted some context for it. Was it supposed to be sad? Hopeful? Awestruck? Caring? Bitter? It's really great to have this video!

I only heard this a few years ago but I feel like I have so many childhood memories with it. Thank you Owl City (and Shawn Chrystopher of course!), so so much
I was chillin' at a Subway when this song came on (mind you I listen to Owl City but I've never heard this specific song of his) and I recognized his accent! This was the 4th of July, 2020 as well and they were still playing Owl City!! I'm so glad he's still recognized and appreciated 9 years later!
I started inexplicably crying halfway through the song, and I cannot place the exact reason why. It could be the overwhelming nostalgia, my extreme adoration of space and the idea of space travel, or the way the song invites you to join in on the story. One thing is certain, however: that they were tears of joy! Adam, thank you so much for bringing back a little euphoria in my crazy life. ❤
Liam Seeds Yeah, It's something different. I honestly don't know if the no rap version or the rap version is better. They both have their own meaning and words.

I hate how underrated owl city is. He deserves more.
Carlolo 956 tbh the chances are that the only reason why is that he doesn’t make new songs very often
You right, for me he the best singer ever

I have always reall really like owl city, I cannot believe I never thought to watch the music videos.
Unlike a lot of music videos, this one makes sense!
I first heard the band on some local station in Seattle when they were doing some kind of Indie tour and I've been addicted ever since

10 years... still giving me chills!
and this is why I love Adam's music.
Except vanilla twilight cause that's about his dead girlfriend apparently
No Adam wrote that for a girlfriend who moved away.
I hope that anyone who reads this will have a good day and God bless you. Love this song very much !!!!!
Thank you god bless you and have a great day :)

[Chorus: Adam Young]
Where was I when the rockets came to life
And carried you away into the alligator sky?
Even though, I'll never know what's up ahead
I'm never letting go, I'm never letting go
[Verse 1: Shawn Crystopher]
Uh uh, that's not a plane, that's me
I'm sitting where I'm supposed to
Floating on the cloud, can't nobody come close to
The concrete and the sky switch places
So now my ceiling is painted with cosmic spaces
Firecracker to the moon, keep your eyes shut
Blasting off like a rocket from the ground up
Heh, I used to catch a cab on the Monday
Now the taxi's selling lights on the runway, fly high
Condo on the milky way
A house on the cloud and God's my landlord
And for my rent, all I pay is my drive
Got that, so if you need me, you can find me in the alligator sky
[Chorus: Adam Young]
Where was I when the rockets came to life
And carried you away into the alligator sky?
Even though, I'll never know what's up ahead
I'm never letting go, I'm never letting go
[Bridge: Adam Young]
Rollercoaster through the atmosphere
I'm drowning in this starry serenade
Where ecstasy becomes cavalier
Imagination's taking me away
Reverie whispered in my ear
I'm scared to death that I'll never be afraid
Rollercoaster through the atmosphere
Imagination's taking me away
[Verse 2: Shawn Chrystopher]
Uh, now I'mma dance like I never danced
Sing like I never sing, dream like I've never dreamed
Or-or tried to, because we've been lied to
That the sun is something that we can't fly to
Well, I sit on my star and see street lights
Look up, ha, you'll miss me if you blink twice
Imagination is high and if you got it you can meet me
When you see me in the alligator sky
[Chorus: Adam Young & Shawn Chrystopher]
Where was I when the rockets came to life (Boom)
And carried you away into the alligator sky? (Into the alligator sky)
Even though, I'll never know what's up ahead (I never know)
I'm never letting go (Never letting go)
I'm never letting go (Owl City)
Where was I when the rockets came to life (Keep your eyes shut)
And carried you away into the alligator sky?
(Uh, like a rocket from the ground up)
Even though, I'll never know what's up ahead (On the Milky Way)
I'm never letting go (I'ma dream like I've never dreamed)
I'm never letting go
[Outro: Adam Young & Shawn Chrystopher]
Never letting go (Ih, yeah)
In the alligator sky
In the alligator sky
In the alligator sky
In the alligator sky
Look up, ha, you'll miss me if you blink twice

I remember having this stuck in my head forever when this came out. Last song syndrome lol. My personal fave Owl City song
YEAHHHHH!!! I totally NAILED IT!!!

why are you lying ? this is from Adam`s facebook page:
Another highlight is the first single, “Alligator Sky,” which features Los Angeles rapper Shawn Chrystopher.
Even after 10 years I still feeling like traveling to space with this song
Fr even to the sky instills that feeling to wanting fly
Specifically in a gundam or as a transformer

Indeed, they didn't seems to acknowledge this masterpiece 😳🤘
Us legands know what's up though, after all this time, we knew.

Wow, that is really cool that you figured that all out...
Thanks )
Wow, thanks for writing this! I loved it!
can't wait to make a animatic with this song
Where was I when the rockets came to life,
And carried you away,
Into the alligator sky?
Even though I'll never know what's up ahead,
I'm never letting go, I'm never letting go!
Uh-uh, that's not a plane, that's me!
I'm sitting where I'm supposed to,
floating on a cloud,
can't nobody come close to!
The concrete and the sky switch places,
So now my ceiling is painted with cosmic spaces!

A house on the cloud and God's my landlord,

and carried you away,
Into the alligator sky?
Even though I'll never know what's up ahead,
I'm never lettin' go, I'm never lettin' go!
(Prove it?)It's a fundamental trait in our human nature,
Man must explore.
Where was I when the rockets came to life,
And carried you away,
into the alligator sky?
Even though I'll never know what's up ahead,
I'm never lettin' go, I'm never lettin' go!
In the alligator sky

Omg underrated at its finest! I’ve been listening for almost 20 years now and still get the same feeling since day 1
I started inexplicably crying halfway through the song, and I cannot place the exact reason why. It could be the overwhelming nostalgia, my extreme adoration of space and the idea of space travel, or the way the song invites you to join in on the story.
