Great fun watch this one made better for me because this is one of my local waters. Don't beat yourself up too much about failing though. Canals in this area have been the target of an Otter introduction programme over recent years. This "unnavigable-bubble" section as you call it is completely dry and marshes over ultimately at both ends and there is no way Otters would get here naturally plus you often have the Canal and River Trust outside here with a cute and cuddly "Otter toy" on their display trellis promoting their release. Although I have had perch to 3 1/2lb from here the carp catch rate has reduced and most local carpers think there numbers are way down. They tend to be shoal end up far more tightly than they used to be as well, often a protective response to predation. I last found the main shoal in winter in a 20 yard stretch way up in the shallows in winter, a section you cannot legally night fish. The tail damage on your first fish tells the story.
It's such a shame because there were and maybe still are "some" nice fish left including one called "two tone linear one side only"....snappy little name that, but describes it nicely.
You should have nipped to the pub, they do amazing home made pies...after all it's what the Melton Mowbray area is most famous for!
There was once talk over making this section "re-naviga-bubble" but they gave up on the idea because it was too hard to pronounce!

I absolutely love these challenges, Mark is a total legend. The chemistry between the pair is always obvious. My only criticism is this, although we do want the challenge to be tough and a stretch for mark to complete. Surely we all also want to see him catch and plenty of action? So could I request next time that the challenge be a little bit more exciting perhaps?

Fished that basin a lot. The perch hang about close against the wall where he's sitting, right under his feet ! I actually saw a chap accidentally catch a 2lb'er on sweetcorn he'd just dropped in checking his shot. Just about exactly the same spot as well !

Great video. I wish I have seen this earlier. I know this canal well and could have put you on some carp on another stretch of the same canal containing upper doubles. Or you could have dropped onto the Beeston canal in Notts for carp.

I love the challenge and look forward to all the episodes but to be honest i have to say this wasnt one of the better ones. Not so much banter between Mark and Harry. Very little technical info in terms of rigs and baits and a lot of time spent chasing perch. Just my opinion guys still looking forward to the next one.
Thanks for your feedback Christopher, we thought there was lots of banter. It was a shame the perch were not being cooperative and we will ensure there is more technical info in the future.

Catch a gudgeon using only worms....do that and your bloody good,then catch 2 perch to half pound using same again,then catch 2 zander no less than 3lb each using 1 perch as bait😂😂😂😂.

it was ok don't think the challenge set was a good one really definitely not in the top 10 of challenges set so hopefully the next one is better
I could never hold a carp that long without it flapping like crazy.

Best thing to do is to take your time with the fish, if it is tensing up, then lower it back down to the mat. They will get used to the feel of you holding them and will relax eventually. Some carp will take longer than others. Always have water on hand to keep them wet and comfortable. We will have some carp handling videos coming to youtube soon.
