I grew up using the twisted cable cast on thinking that it was the only method. It wasn't until the internet became popular that I learnt about other ways to cast on. It's still my favourite method despite it's limited stretch. I never thought to do it purlwise or a mixture of both. Thanks for the tip about how to avoid the rounded edge. Never too old to learn! Have a great day, Norman.
I shall refuse to be too old for about anything for the rest of my life and I feel the whole idea is very old-fashioned anyway. Why would anyone ever be to old for anything - as long as the body is willing..and even then :) ah..and happy to hear I was able to teach you a new trick.
I love this because you don't have to keep track of the "long tail" or "short tail". It just works. In the last few hours, I've cast on a hundred rows, one at a time. This is flawless! And, it keeps a tight edge!
I started knitting about 25 years ago, then fell out of the hobby. Just getting back into it now. I've never used the cable cast-on method before, but I will certainly use it from now on!!
Great tip to avoid round edge on the right corner. Thanks ! the knitted cast on in pattern really looks like a tubular cast on, good to know it is not as stretchy though.
I consider myself advanced. You are guru. Without question. I've knitted Kafe Fasset's sweater pattens, which are nearly impossible, also very complex cable sweaters. You make me smile, because you speak to me.
Norman, you are a genius! Love that you don't have to estimate how much yarn to allow when casting on with this method. You are now my 'go-to' knitting guru.
Great tutorial Norman! Thanks for showing us all the various ways in which we can use the cable cast on. I can’t remember if I twist my stitches when I use it, lol. I know I do with the knitted cast on. Thanks again for all the options! Have a wonderful week!😀
have a wonderful week as well, thea. and even tho i have said it before, thank you so much for continuing to support me so diligently. it is much aprpeciated.
This is so much easier with a crochet hook. I just can't seem to pull the loop through without it flipping off my needle. 😩 So I grabbed my crochet hook instead and easy peasy. You make it look so simple. I'm not sure what I'm missing.
why not? i mean..it's the exact same thing. you enter the needle in between two stitches and then you throw your yarn around with your right hand as if to knit and pull through :)
Thank you - this is super helpful! What cast off would you use to match this cast on exactly? I’ve tried the “cable cast off” but it doesn’t seem to have as much stretch and the cast off tends to flare out. Thank you!
Sorry for seeing this a bit late. I don't know really. I never care about my edges matching in the first place and I'd never start a 1x1 ribbing project with this cast-on either.
Norman, how do you keep your cable cast-on loose? My first two or three loops are ok, but I hen I get tighten up so much that I can't slide them down the left needle. 😮
hm...i would say this really depends. BUt as I said, it's not very stretchy so for your average sock or hat project, i'D go for a italian or german twisted cast-on
i am not quite sure I understand this question. But for general resources on how to knit, kindly refer to my website: nimble-needles.com/learn-to-knit-for-beginners/
Thank you, Norman! I needed to refresh my memory of this cast on method so turned to you first. Once again, you taught me something new in the process (i just love that you do that! 😆). I hadn't thought about trying this cast in purlwise but, it completely makes sense. Thank you so much for always being so thurow and inlightening. I truly appreciate what you do. 💜✌️🧶

Bless-a tutorial in continental. Super great, thank you!
Norman, your videos are so helpful and thank you so much for no annoying music! :-)
I really appreciate how you simplify complicated cast ons. I have so much more confidence now. Thank you!
Yawesome! You are so welcome!

Very nice tutorial thank you so much
Hi, Norman!
Your second channel is exactly what I need!
Thank you, thank you, thank you❤
Happy to hear that, Iliana!

yeah, it's frighteningly similar, isn't it?
@@nimbleneedlestwo oh yes !

yeah...Mr. Fasset clearly often crosses the border of what should be possible with knitting. But to be sure, is designs are certainly very noteworthy!

aww...thank you! Not sure I see myself as a guru but I guess it's the pupils that get the say there so I take it as a compliment
The best instructions!
Thank you so much for this video!! I like the look of the tubular cast on edge, but it seems very complicated to me. But I can do this one!!

Thanks for clearing demonstrating another new-to-me technique. I might 'cheat' on this one by using a crochet hook. Lol.
nothing wrong with cheating..i won't tell! :P

if it works for you with a crochet hook, then go for it. It's the result that matters not the way you got there :)
And, I'm an American knitter, and my stitches are very tight. But, I'm hoping this will get me to loosen up!
Can you do this cast on with the right hand throwing technique?
why not? i mean..it's the exact same thing. you enter the needle in between two stitches and then you throw your yarn around with your right hand as if to knit and pull through :)

Sorry, forgot to add. I am knitting a blanket in 1x1 rib in fingering weight yarn with size 3.25 needles.
Sorry for seeing this a bit late. I don't know really. I never care about my edges matching in the first place and I'd never start a 1x1 ribbing project with this cast-on either.
Is the cable cast-on good top down socks? What is a better / best stretchy cast-on for socks?
no, i wouldn't use it for socks. it's not stretchy enough in my experience.
Norman, how do you keep your cable cast-on loose? My first two or three loops are ok, but I hen I get tighten up so much that I can't slide them down the left needle. 😮
hm...well..that's quite difficult for me to answer but I guess relaxing takes practise?
Great tutorial! Would you use the cable cast on for hats or socks?

How do i make rows?
i am not quite sure I understand this question.
