    Zizek maybe not the best philosopher to follow if you are looking for straight forward solutions, but is definitely one of the best ones to define problems in all their entirety. Therefore, I do not agree with Chomsky when he ridiculed Zizek and implied that he does not serve any purpose.

Zizek says it plainly..I wish every discussion about afghanistan, al qaeda or "radical islam" started with this disclamer: At some point we in the west made the decision that Islamic fundamentalism was better than the secular left and we are all paying for it dearly..with out that understanding we begin to think of fundamentalism as an inevitablity in the region which allows us to justify support of oppression and despotism(the second inevitablity of the region)

    @slickvguy part 2:
    One example is the PM of Iran and Israel. Ahmadinejad has had some very questionable remarks regarding the Holocaust (though some Jews/Christians exploit the Holocaust/past Jewish suffering, the historical event of the Holocaust is a fact and thus Ahmadinejad is a fool for questioning it).
    On the other hand, Netanyahu has compared Ahmadinejad to Hitler and Iran to Nazi Germany, which is just sad, especially since his ancestors suffered under the REAL Nazis.

  • @leostoltoy
    @leostoltoy 14 років тому +1

    Zizek is right that the world is paying a terrible price for playing Islamists against Marxism and its allies during the Cold War. However, he does not mention that the price of not doing so could have been greater. The Soviet Union (the largest country in the world, which also controlled half of Europe and much of the rest of the world) was a greater threat to peace and the West's security then than al-Qaeda is today. (Whether the calculus is the same for Hamas vs Fatah is another question).

    @yuryf Yugoslavia was a socialist state, not an oppressive communist one like the Soviet Union. It wasn't a member of the Warsaw Pact and wasn't allied with Soviet Communism, and developed its own form of socialism which focused on social corporatism. All companies were run by workers and the economy wasn't centrally-planned; as such, Yugoslavia had one of the highest living standards in Europe, despite being "commie".

    @slickvguy I won't ask you on why you support Israel but I will say that you are not in the majority, in that most defenders of Israel oppose any and every criticism of Israel.
    The thing is that there are a lot of Israeli Jews especially that are very anti-Arab and call them names such as "savages" while on the other side there is a lot of real anti-semitism amongst some Arab nations. When these two clash, there is little room for intellectual engagement and discussion.

    I have talked to Israeli's who vocalize that they hate Arabs, others some of the most left wing socialist social workers, artists say they associate Arabic language hearing it with bombs coming soon after. I have seen Arabs Palestinians who are so intently angry at outsiders in the Westbank and Israeli authority figures patrol border police who humuliate everyone who is not an Israeli/Religious Jew. I have also experienced wonderful progressive Israelis who alleviate my insecurities and reassure me about my position in society.

    @yuryf To continue on from my first post (I ran out of room), Žižek comes from Slovenia, which was the most well-off republic within Yugoslavia. Despite having 1/13th of Yugoslavia's total population, it managed to produce 1/5th of Yugoslavia's GDP due to the republic being the only one during the socialist reign to border a capitalist country (Austria), which allowed for more concentrated market development from Yugoslav companies, especially in technology and banking.

    It is not anti-semitism to critzisize Israel.
    But it is very well anti-semitism not to apply exactly the same (!) standards of human rights to ALL other Arab, respectively muslim countries as to Israel.
    It is anti-semitism to single out Israel when critisizing human rights and not to care about the way f.i. Christians or other minority groups are treated in countries with muslim majorities.
    And this is what Zizek does.

    if we put political division aside, and just look at the individuals as individuals living in theyre respective society i think i would find more affiliation moraly and culturaly to israelis than palestinians, and this doesn't mean a little thing, or some trivial things as for example morning rituals or music taste, but the essential view on human life and how it should be conducted, i think the palestinians together with other arab countries are generaly moraly and culturaly backwards compared to other western or far eastern civilizations, and have a very agressive and tribal aproach to life and politics, individuality is quite toned down in theyere society, one maybe superficial yet effective example is the names they give to each other, muhhamad, muhammad, muhammad, and muhammad. Not to mention the intollerance religious racial or sexual, in theyere society viewd as normal, or the problem of inbreeding, and arranged marriage.
