Almost five years after the release of their latest long-player Sovran, DRACONIAN announce the release of their new epos, Under a Godless Veil, out October 30, 2020 via Napalm Records.
The upcoming full-length delivers a captivating mélange of dreary doom and contrasting vocals and is the second offering featuring stunning singer Heike Langhans. The first notes of the opener will immediately draw the listener into a void of interweaving beauty, coalescing with paralyzing depression that leaves nothing but the desire of total immersion in the whole record. Under a Godless Veil carries the legacy of gothic doom metal à la My Dying Bride into a new decade of the genre.
DRACONIAN states:
“To DRACONIAN, Under a Godless Veil is by far the most diverse album we have created. Inspired by some of the music closest to Johan’s heart; everything from traditional Doom to scaled-down, Gothic rock-inspired pieces and more. Some will perhaps describe the songs as more refined and meditative. Some ambient elements have been added to the mix without overshadowing the traditional characteristics that are DRACONIAN.
Resonating with the compositions, Anders’s lyrical direction is ambiguous and a progression of the first two-three albums, yet more subtle while embracing the Gnostic philosophy more directly. One could say Under a Godless Veil is an act of contemplation; About living and dying and remembering who we are in a strange, abrasive world far from home.“

This band is so underrated. Other doom bands might have more media presence, but that doesn't mean that this band isn't killing it. I wish My Dying Bride sounded like this often.
but on the other hand, i feel like being less known might even work in their favor, probably less pressure from Napalm and more freedom as compared to the bigger names that has to sell x amount each time

To those who rightly pointed out the similarities between Heike's vocals in this song to Leah's from Trees of Eternity.
Heike and Aleah were friends. Heike actually was a guest vocalist for the band that was created after Trees of Eternity disbanded and all the lyrics were written by Aleah. Its pretty obvious Heike wanted to carry on her legacy in some way and I think that is a beautiful thing. Aleah was special and she will always be missed.
I miss her too!

@@raktor1996 Not really... While this one is short, be told that this seems to be a concept album. However, the lyrics are already able to carry its own mean. While almost always embedded in metaphysics and classical literature topics, their lyrics have become more multilayered and nuanced, which brings more levels of meanings and ideas. Actually, now they are more skillful, lyrics-wise.
Go and listen (and read) carefully Dishearten for example: a short story, where singers' roles get switched on the last part, like in a plot twist! Or Pale Tortured Blue, which also has "a revelation moment" (it's like an "upgraded" version of Not Breathing).
@@yibril17 When I said older albums i meant Sovran too. It is this song in particular that I don't like the lyrics of, it doesn't have any coherence in my opinion. Maybe the complete album will be better.
@@raktor1996 Take this as a gentle advise: please don't get to conclusions or judgements whenever something isn´t understood... Instead be kind and humble to consider not being knowledgeable enough to "connect the dots". Therefore read, learn and get the references... use incomprehension as a motive to get into poetry, classic authors, old philosophers...

Despite I think the song seems to be part of a concept album (see tracklist), some ideas/references are underlying here (quite a lot of them actually).
In the deepest, it can be read as the never-ending fight between the life pulsion (non-rational) and the knowledge (rational), the heart being the former, and Sophia the latter.
Knowledge brings self-conciousness, that in turn shows own finitude, and therefore sorrow. That´s when Sophia realises that ignorance was a bliss, and longs that innocence, finding the beauty in it (the heart).
Knowledge "was born" from life pulsion ("before they made you"), but Sophia doesn´t realise ("before they made you to forget"). This is metaphysical: in order to live, human developed rational thinking, which then ended up in "why to live? what purpose?" This translates to "the forgetting" of that original purpose that knowledge was supposed to be serving: to live...
Sophia (rational thinking/knowledge) fails to find an ultimate (evasive) purpose: the unknown (evasive) god. The heart, non-rational (life pulsion), is the one remembering Sophia of her failure: she's "a bizantine hero" (as opposed to a god) since she can´t escape from her limitations of the sensible existence ("you're not untouchable") yet the heart pushes her ("reach out and break the cosmic window").

While it is great to have a new Draconian song, releasing a "single" 6 months before the album release is pure torture.That said, Anders has THE best rough vox in the business.
The growls remind me of Be'Lakor a bit.

Everything about this band is influential and sacred of another type.

I've never had this amazing feeling since years. this brings me back to the 'best era' of metal. This song keeps giving me chills from the beginning to the end, wow. Such a masterpiece, one of the best songs i've ever heard in my entire life. I just love it so much, this is perfection in my opinion. So aggressive, deep, intense but at the same time so sweet, so doom, so melodic as i always loved. Heike and Anders voice, 10/10 as always. Love you Draconian, thank you seriously i'm so happy

Sorrow fullfills my heart. Not because the song sounds disappointing. It is is instead a prelude to the next masterpiece of this immense band. Sorrow fullfills my heart because Draconian are the band that my best friend most loved and he sadly passed away at the age of 47. LIstening to you reminds me of him....and sorrow fullfills my heart. I have been listening to Draconian since 2003. And still to this day every album is distinct from the other, but yet always, always Draconian. I am psyched once again.!
After Where Lovers Mourn Draconian has been legendary to me, just an amazing groundbreaking band that topped all my favourites instantly. And I can't believe they're still doing just as good. It's still consistent Draconian with new incredible vision and inspiration and I love you for being yourselves unwaveringly.
It sounds like a typical Draconian song. Which means I love it. Beauty and power and darkness all blended together into a nightmare/ecstatic vision. Perfection.
My favorite thing about this song is I can't tell whether the clean vocals in the hook are threatening or calming. Which makes it all the more haunting.

This is about a figure of Sophia from gnostic teachings. According to Nag Hammadi books, she has somehow fallen from grace and thus helped creating material world.

Listening to this new song by Draconian, Heike Langhans has something of a style similar to Aleah, it is clear that Heike is very original, she also sings beautiful and she is also a very beautiful woman and this style of gothic music, doom and a little atmospheric will always remind us our dear Aleah too.

Everything is PERFECT ! This is not a melancholic song, this is a song full of emotions, an empowering one . My feeling is that is part of a ,,story" that will be unveiled together with the whole album release . I love the heaviness of the lirycs sang by Anders, words and sentences, right in your face . Heike is conclusioning each time , with her majestic atitude and voice . Though, this song is not for everybody....but i, LOVE it ! As always, this amazingly talented people, never disappoint ! For songs like this, and many more , we love DraconiaN, one of the best bands in this world ! /,,/

I'm a couple years late to hearing this...better late than never. One of my favorite bands now. Haven't heard one damn song from them that wasn't filled with what we all seek from this genre.
Finally new Draconian stuff. And again more in the direction of "A Rose for the Apocalypse" and in terms of style. Not that "Sovran" was bad, but the album was different and that, what I loved about Draconian was missing.

Huh, pretty rare to see someone who holds ARftA so highly and Sovran so low. Personally I'd put Sovran as my favourite album of theirs alongside Arcane Rain Fell and ARftA at the bottom, although Wall of Sighs is still one of the best tracks Draconian have put out. Still one of the few bands I can't think of a single bad song for however.

On this song I think you can hear Heike's influence on the band more clearly. The main guitar part and the chords sounds similar to her band ISON, and it mixes so well with Draconians style!
