John using his child-like voice (among the many different vocal styles he employed) with interesting double tracking and occasional heavy reverb used to enhance the dream-like setting. Paul with his perfect pitch in one of his higher registers, synced perfectly with John. Still gives one goosebumps 52 years later.
John Blackburn the reason it sounds child-like is down to an effect called vari-speed, which was possible due to the fact they recorded this song on a 4 track cassette recorder. The instrumental was pitched down prior to recording, allowing John to lay down his vocal take a few steps down. the track (including johns vocal) would then be vari-speeded (pitched) back up thus making him sound younger and his vocal higher than normal. It’s difficult to explain but it’s similar to the very high pitched chipmunk effect. George Martin was way ahead of his time and had a great ability to spawn The Beatles psychedelic ideas such as “make my voice similar to a 10 year olds” into sound and reality.
It’s so weird that this was 55 years ago….which would ordinarily be considered “old“ music. But listening to it now, it still sounds more modern and creative than any of the crap nowadays. That these four guys came along all at the same time, all from the same country, and the same city….was just meant to be, I guess. Never been anything like it since. I wish something could turn on the world nowadays like that. We need someone/something to bring the world together again, but I think we’re too far gone.
I could listen to John & Paul repeating that ending chorus over & over & over.......since Sgt Peppers inception, that magical blend of vocals has always brought Lucy to life !
I've suddenly become obsessed with this song. Everything about it seems strange. I suppose I'd describe it as 'unpolished', which is something I've felt good music should have a certain element of. John's voice, the Tambura that I didn't even notice, the muffled bass... It comes together and crafts something quite amazing.
Quick Julian...draw daddy a nice pic of a lady flying in the sky with diamonds...call it 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds' and give it to me for your homework......phew...

They're saying at the Hoffman forum that it's Paul on the opening vocal in the chorus. Am i nuts!!!!???? I'd bet my German DMM white vinyl White Album it's John!!! Help before I go looking for that confounded bridge!!

@@808rex3I always thought it was because this was 2 separate takes Frankensteined together and they were at different speeds
@@LilSkott that's strawberry fields forever
Natural voices well recorded on perfect pitch with no suck thing as auto tune 🙌🏻
1:28 hehe
Geoffrey Orbegoso I always used to hear that in the actual song and I thought I was imagining it
That and Paul’s voice cracking in the backing vocals which got buried during the mix
@@Oh_I_Will Yep, it happens at 2:29… he almost went into his high harmony
@@Oh_I_Will You mean William.

@fazesmo kkkkkkkkk
Just utter madness in the best way possible. Was there anything remotely like this before it existed. It must have been the LSD!
2:28 need I say anything
Picture yourself in a boat on a river
With tangerine trees and marmalade skies
Somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly
A girl with kaleidoscope eyes
Cellophane flowers of yellow and green
Towering over your head
Look for the girl with the sun in her eyes
And she's gone
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Ah
Follow her down to a bridge by a fountain
Where rocking horse people eat marshmallow pies
Everyone smiles as you drift past the flowers
That grow so incredibly high
Newspaper taxis appear on the shore
Waiting to take you away
Climb in the back with your head in the clouds
And you're gone
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Ah
Picture yourself on a train in a station
With plasticine porters with looking glass ties
Suddenly someone is there at the turnstile
The girl with the kaleidoscope eyes
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Ah
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Ah
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Wow
AMAZING!!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤
The subtitles on this are hilarious! A girl with colitis go by!!!!
FAB :)

Its Paul on the chorus, John on the verses
Pretty sure it's both of them in unison (sped up), and then Paul goes to the higher harmony on the last line.
@@jl1848 nope, just adt. sounds like two people but its not
@@ricecakekw How can you be sure?
@@billburns7721 no it’s not , John sings verses & chorus , Paul backing vocals on chorus
Just take out your left earbud when listening to the original and you get the same effect 🤣
My friend name is Lucy she is 8
Sounds like a proper Scouser.

That’s Paul
Definitely Paul
It's paul but the vocals are pitched up 1-2 semitones for the whole song
