- My neighbor Sam and I headed up to Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula for an agate hunt, and we were not disappointed in our finds. Sam found a couple of beauties, and I managed to find one myself.

- KINGSLEY NORTH -
Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

I buy a lot of lapidary supplies from The Rock Shed. I don't make money from your purchases there, but they have good prices and good service. This is where I buy my finer grits and polish.

Grew up in the lower peninsula, outside of Lansing. Valedictorian. Went to MTU on a full-ride scholarship, and married a beautiful girl from Kingsford. Have quite a few Petoskey's and agates myself. Now in Texas. I really enjoy re-exploring Michigan's U.P. vicariously through your videos. Thanks so much for posting this one. Have a great Memorial Day weekend!
Sam is headed to Tech in the fall. That's one of the reasons we headed that way this year instead of the eastern U.P. like we usually do. I'm counting on him to do some scouting for me while he's there.
@@MichiganRocksit’s a great school
I grew up in the lower peninsula as well. Both of my parents went to Tech. My brother and I spent summers with our grandparents in the Keweenaw. I’m in Oregon now and try to get back there each year.
@@lisabraun8008 What a great place to spend your summers. I only get up there for a few days at a time.
@@MichiganRocksIt really was. I didn’t realize at the time how lucky I was to spend summers there, but I sure understand now! I love the Keweenaw, and have been toying with the idea of retiring there. But, there’s ALL that snow! Lol. We’ll see what happens…I have a ways to go before retirement.
If you ever have a day where you wonder if it is worth putting all this time into making these videos, just know the answer is YES! I am an avid rockhound from the Sierra Nevada in Northern California, but am wheelchair bound until I have some hip surgery. I have found so much pleasure watching your adventures. The ebb and flow of the waves, the excitement of finding a keeper. You have put a smile back on my face ... and I will get back out there as soon as I can. Thank you.
Thanks for that, Mary. I have gotten quite a few messages like that over the years from other people in similar situations. Either they can't get out anymore or they used to live in Michigan but have moved away and miss the Great Lakes beaches.
Any day on the lake is a good day; bonus on your finds!
How'd you do up there, Jim? Find any good ones? Sam cleaned up, at least on small ones. I found a really great one the day I met you. It was small, but really green. I have never found a green agate before.
@@MichiganRocks I found several minor "agatey" stones, but nothing with defined bands. I found many great rocks and specimens, including several I want to cut. Also, we don't have much of the volcanic types in Lake Michigan, so I collected a set of the many different types I encountered. Also, I found many stones that are special (to me, so different from Lake Michigan stones!) that I will be tumbling or grinding and polishing.
Beyond beautiful beaches I haven't seen since I was 14 y/o (only other time I visited the UP), I spent parts of two days at the Seaman Museum and took a lot of video there, which I will post on YT soon.
@@JimFry Wow, you must have had a ball up there if you haven't been there since you were a kid. It's so beautiful up there. There are lots of interesting rocks other than agates. I'm glad you found a few cutters.
Have a great holiday weekend everyone.
That boys got the agate touch!!
Yes he does. He's an agate magnet.
Que lugar tan hermoso ,agua cristalina, rocas me encanta❤❤❤
Part of the crystal clear water is due in part, to zebra muscles. We used to go to Big Bay Denoc in the UP , fishing. I left my fishing pole unattended to get my hubby a water from the cooler and a Northern Pike ripped right out of the holder. I didn’t have a steel leader on so it snapped the line very fast. We went back to look for my pole and I could see over 10 feet down ! I did get my pole back, only to lose it overboard the very next day! 🤣. That time I didn’t find it. But the water is so clear. The zebra muscles keep it that way. They are really ruining the Great Lakes. Hopefully they have done something about it since I have been up there, over 10 years ago. Michigan is a beautiful state. I’m originally from Maine and the two states resemble each other. Only thing is, I haven’t found any lobster 🦞 in lake Michigan yet! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
🙏🌎☮️♥️
"some kind of rocks" are my favorite!
Love it when you and Sam go hunting...there's just one good thing after another. Sam has learned so much and now both of you are teaching us. You two have great rapport. You found some good ones this trip.
Sam is a quick learner.
@@MichiganRocks And he has retained the knowledge!
couldnt wait till the end to comment~ Way to go Sam, what a beauty!! Thank for sharing!
I'm back again, Nice on you too! You guys are on fire!
You and Sam give a whole new meaning to Eagle eyes. WOW. Great job. Beautiful agates
At least Sam does. I just try to keep up.
Lots of good finds! I'm glad you were able to get out with Sam again. Having a hiatus from learning the past 6+ months, except for your channel and one other, it was nice to hear you mention all the different types of rocks, which jogged my memory. I'm looking forward to being able to get out this summer, since it wasn't possible last year and rock hunting videos were my classroom and window to the world. 😊
I hope you can get out soon. It's so much better to be there in person.
@@MichiganRocks Thanks, I'm so ready for it! :)
Good hunt! Sam's eye agate was awesome!
You have hyped me and my daughter up for a rock hunt here in Pa. Thanks a bunch!
Good luck, Gary!
It's raining now .... at least the company is good! What an adventure for a day!
The rain didn't last long. It did rain harder on us that evening, but we found agates so we were happy.
@@MichiganRocks You really did find a good amount of agates ... but they are so small! I enjoy watching the hunt, though.
@@maryseaman312 We went out the next day and found a lot more, but they were tiny too.
Great little video.
Your identification skills are definitely improving....
Wow, that's a great compliment. Thanks, Paul!
Nice agate adventure. I have never been up there, but hope to within the next few years.
It's just beautiful up there.
What a fun video and so nice to see Sam again!
🙋♀️❤️Looks like a perfect day !
It was really nice that day.
The lucky chub rewarded you guys with agates!
For me it's luck. I think Sam relies on skill.
Catch and release had me chuckling!
I have some of those rocks from somewhere! I cheer in my head for you and Sam when you find something cool.
Thanks for the video. Looks like you had fun. My wife and I were up in the Keweenaw over the weekend and she found a agate that looked like Sam's at 7:20. I found a lot of the prehnite. Some good pieces for tumbling and some for cutting. I love finding copper bits in them. There was a lack of yooperlite. My wife found only a few. Thanks again.
Sounds like you guys did really well! We didn't go out for Yooperlites this time, but we found lots of agates, mostly small ones, and some copper at the Central mine.
You did good on the agates. I have to bring my detector next time and look for some copper, maybe some replacement agates.
UA-cam gentleman came a long way since I start watching your videos. Keep up the good work guys.
Thanks!
Wow, the scenery at that little park you stopped at was gorgeous! You both found some beautiful agates and other rocks today. I enjoyed exploring along with you!
That whole area is gorgeous.
Thank you for taking us up to Lake Superior! I can’t wait to get back up there! You and Sam make a great team
Yes, Sam finds the agates and I film them.
I was in the U P last fall and the waves coming off Superior would knock you down! I would have given money to have a calm day like that one!
It was pretty windy for two of the days we were there, like 25 mph gusts. Since we were on a peninsula, we were able to go to the calm side each day and avoided most of it.
Nice finds u 2 got❤love the scenery too😍👋🇫🇮
Beautiful agates today. Bravo.
That last Agate you found is really unique, and I love the hole. Hag-et? Lol
I suppose that's a good name for it, even though I don't really like the term hag stone.
Haha some kinda rock on some other kinda rock, reminds me of a few weeks ago we went hounding at the creek and brought along my friends 8 year old who found a rock and proudly informed us that this rock is as hard as a rock😂 Y'all must be taking the same geology classes...
❤❤❤ Haha she also told us there was quicksand at said creek, I said NOoo there isn't any quicksand here, but wasnt a week later til we found ourselves stuck in the big middle of the sand pit slowly sinking car filling with water 😅 I'm not gonna question her knowledge again tho😂
Those darn kids know stuff sometimes!
Never say Never ... you found
agates. Your in rock heaven
That is rock heaven. I love it up there.
Good finds! Love to watch you find rocks. As you know, not all Agates have banding. Here out west in Utah, we find quite a few with banding. But I have buckets of other agate that are translucent with plume-shaped, dendritic, or mossy inclusions. Lots of Piegion blood Agates, & translucent Agates with jasper or chalcedony with jasper within it...I know you don't tumble yours because most of the ones you find are very small. But we find good-sized ones here big enough to tumble & polish, which I have done & are extremely pretty when done!
I just bought a bunch of Pigeon Blood agates from the Rock Shed. I plan to use them in future tumbling experiment videos.
Only slightly jealous.. I'm moving to Utah In a couple weeks and will greatly miss the great lakes and my agate hunting every summer.
Yep, I'd have a hard time not having all the water around. I hear Utah is beautiful though.
Was just up there last week. Happy hunting guys!
I love Michigan up 2024 im here now Mexico town
Nice finds on the agates, love the first agate Sam found, beautiful.
I am leaving for the UP on Monday. I always have high hopes, but never find a thing. I'm hoping to maybe find a yooperlite.
Have a great Memorial Day weekend.
I liked his first one better too. Too bad it wasn't as big as his big one.
@@MichiganRocks That would have been nice. Maybe next time.
Cool finds! I think the eyes have it for my favorite.
Me too. Big is good, but that one was just amazing. Eye agates are my favorite.
RUN ROB! You need to trip Sam in the sand and get ahead of him once or twice.
That guy will dive right in front of you to get an agate first. Filming slows me down. Old age has affected my eyes in a bad way too. I really need to see an eye doctor one of these days.
@@MichiganRocks Sneaky Sam! I know what you mean about old age, and we aren't even old! I need readers too I think hahaha. The past year, my vision has tanked. Go get a free exam and then get your prescription. Go online and order them there. They are at least good glasses for backups. Regular glasses and sunglasses! Can't live without the Rx sunglasses now. Online is good so you can get a pair just for rock hunting. That way, if you crack/scratch them or drop them in the water, you're only out $20
@@saralynn518 Yeah, I'm not very careful with my cheaters.
@saralynn518 Hi Sara!! Do you recall the online address/es of wear you can find glasses after you get your prescription? I only need readers, but my eye doctor writes me a great prescription for driving that I don't want to spend a lot of money on, but want to get a pair!!
Getting a prescription for rock hunting wouldn't be a bad idea either!! Thanks Sara!! I hope you and your family have a Wonderful Memorial Weekend!! 🤗❤️👍🙋🏻♀️
@@kimfrommn7162 I have purchased from Zenni. I bought 3 pairs I believe. Other people use Zeelool often. Warby Parker lets you try on 5 frames at a time at home until you find one you like. You can also try glasses on virtually by snapping a picture of yourself on most sites. Also heard good things for Eyebuydirect and GlassesUSA. If you run across a company that catches your eye, do a couple Google searches for feedback. I tend to search, "Is *** legit?" A really important measurement to make sure you have is the bridge width. This will help you find glasses that fit your nose, not looking too big or too small. Who knew there are arm measurements and pupillary distance. Once you have the numbers, you are fine, otherwise it's a craps shoot. I can almost guarantee you can find a YT video on how to order online glasses correctly. I pick up tips every time. Best of luck to you!
Great finds
Wow!!! 2:04
I so want to go up there soon. Just don't think it will be in the cards for me anytime soon. I just started a cat rescue at my home. I don't think I will be going anywhere for a while. But wow you guys for several beautiful agates and other rocks. I miss it so.
At least the cats appreciate you. We'll stick to rescuing fish and giving agates a good home too.
Wow you guys did really good!! That agate with the hole in it would make a cool necklace! I think your starting to get better at agate hunting Rob 🤔 😊
Sam still out does me about four to one. I'll keep trying though!
Nice finds!!
Nice find Sam!
I think the tumblers have some treasures after your adventures,
I brought a few home.
Rootbeer color agate...oohhh pretty. Keweenaw is beautiful.
15:10 that rock looks like it was burnt by friction with the atmosphere.
I doubt that's a meteorite, but it would be cool if it was.
Way cool agates
We sure thought so.
Nice agate Rob!
Thanks!
Wha!!!! That agate with the eyes had me sitting here with my mouth hanging open! Nice find Sam! I have a Gobi eye agate that looks like that but its green. Everyone needs a young eyed rock hunting partner!
Sam makes my videos better by giving me good stuff to film. I love eye agates, so I loved that one too.
Great finds! Would it be too much to say "you guys rock!"
Nope, that would be appropriate.
As both a rockhound and a fisherman: +10,000 points to Sam for saving the Chub! And had to laugh, your “Green Rock!” is very similar to my “Red Rock!” (I love finding bright red rocks!)
And gosh I need to take a trip to Lake Superior. I find a lot of Sea Maggots (or is it M-Agates? 🤔) in the seaside glacial till by me, usually iron-rich multicolor chert/jasper with quartz, but good banding is so rare. And the geology at Lake Superior is so interesting!
I usually spell it magate. Maybe it should be maygate.
I'm drawn to green rocks for some reason. If you like red rocks, this beach is for you!
@@MichiganRocks Whhhhyyyyy is it a 15 hour drive from me, good lord 😭 I’ll have to make it a long weekend once I finish my job training!
I find some really interesting deep green rocks here, definitely a sedimentary type that I don’t *think* will take a polish, but I do have one running in a polish batch right now as a test - fingers crossed!
@@WarszawaScream Good luck with that one!
My beloved and I just group categorize all of them as "Ites", since we are in a constant state of befuddlement about the Prehnite, Patricianite, Thompsonite issue. And last year, Sand Bay was just that...sand.
It fluctuates between rocks and sand from what I've seen. We were at the west end of the bay. The ites confuse me too. I can narrow it down to one of those three. Green prehnite is the only one I'm fairly certain about.
Beautiful, unique stones. Well done
Watching from the Gulf Coast, contemplating a trip to the Keweenaw when I'm up north this summer ...
The water will be colder there, but you'll have fun.
Isso é mar ou Rio???? Aí é muito incrível.
É o Lago Superior, um dos Grandes Lagos.
Another phenomenal Video Rob!! Plus, I see all the Subs you keep getting!! People know who to subscribe to, and I am happy they are finding you!! Outstanding!!! The Video showed a lot of Gorgeous Rocks!! I find myself trying to think of when I can go rock hunting next when I watch your Videos!! What a Fun time staying up there for a couple of nights!! You and Sam hunt well together!! Have your eye Dr. give you a prescription to wear when rock hunting! Then you can show Sam how well you see those agates!!! I hope you and Nancy have a Wonderful Memorial Weekend!! Sam and his family also!!! 🤗❤️👍🙋🏻♀️
First thing would be to actually get an eye doctor. It's on my list of things to do soon.
I had a UA-cam Short take off recently and got over 100k subs from just that. Kind of seems like cheating.
@@MichiganRocks Hi Rob!! Boy , did I have some words for you on not feeling guilty in how Subs come to watch your Channel!!! I clicked something accidentally and lost it all!!! Thanks for another fabulous video. Heading that way in June. Last year was my first trip to the lakes. What can I say. Fell in love. Learned from you about Petoskies, Puddings and fun of hand polishing. Thanks!
The Great Lakes really are great, aren't they?
Now that's where the term eager beaver came from.
I can't believe that nobody else said it.
Nope, you're the first. That would be a very eager beaver.
Always enjoy your trips to Lake Superior. Looks like you guys cleaned up ! The beaches were pretty much sanded in this weekend.
I need to get over to Lake Michigan more this summer. My plan is to go camping for a few days and hit a lot of beaches from up north to way down by Indiana. We'll see if I ever get around to it.
@@MichiganRocks Sounds like a plan !
1:02: I'm not the right kind of geologist but I would guess your rock is an amigdaloidal basalt or andesite since it's dark-coloured. Rhyolite has the same composition as granite (but smaller minerals) so usually is pink or red. Also this channel is great - I'm on the Canadian side of the lakes and teach geology so often encourage students to check you out to learn about beach rocks (or glacial erratics) they may find!
You would probably know better than I would. I am not any kind of geologist! A lot of the rocks on that beach are red and I think they're rhyolite. This one wasn't nearly as red, so maybe it's basalt. Sounds like we agree on the amygdaloidal part, so that's good! Thanks for recommending this amateur to your students!
You two really found some nice ones! The UP is a wonderful place!
I love it up there.

How well does amygdaloidal rhyolite polish?
I haven't tried to polish it except for a video I did on rocks to avoid tumbling. That might have been amygdaloidal basalt though. It didn't do well.
Let's get this on 'film' heheh
There's just not a good modern substitute for that. Let's get this in ones and zeros doesn't have a good ring to it.
What a great day of rock hunting! That first agate! Wow! And congrats to Sam on heading to Tech in the fall.
That one was really, really good.

Hi there! Just started watching your tumbling videos and I had a question! So - I had tumbled some stones and put them through all the grit cycles, and I am not happy with the end result. Am I able to start from the beginning at grit 1 and re-tumble them? Or do I need to start them at a later grit stage? Your videos have been super helpful!!
You can probably just go back to the second to last stage unless you see something that you really want to grind out more. If they're just dull but otherwise ok, don't go further back. Before you do that, though, watch this video. You might find a way to improve what you're doing for better results. ua-cam.com/video/RuPtptr7_V4/v-deo.html
@@MichiganRocks awesome, thank you so much! I will check out that video!
May I ask where you like to “purchase” rough rocks to tumble? I just started my rock tumbling journey and I’m having difficulty finding any really neat rocks. I do LOVE looking for rocks; always have, I would just like to ‘purchase’ a couple neat ones as well. Thanks!!!
Most of the time I buy from The Rock Shed or Kingsley North. There are links to both places in the description of this video.
@@MichiganRocks thank you! I did visit one of those links yesterday. I will have to check out the other one today 😊
I live way down south of you guys. If I drove 5 hours would you teach me about rocks? I know it wouldn’t be free, but it would be worth it to me.
🙏🌎☮️♥️
I'm not a geologist and I don't know all that much about rocks compared to some people. My expertise is more in polishing them. I'd love to be able to teach people about rocks or polishing rocks in person but making these videos takes up too much of my time. The idea of the videos is to teach a lot more people without anyone having to travel.
@@MichiganRocks Thank you. I totally understand. ☮️
Pro-tip: get a mining pick ⛏️ and dig a pit in the big rock. Half pounders hide there.
OK while I am no expert on animal husbandry and I’m just spit balling here, but I’m gonna say no the beaver was not trying to damn lake superior.
Some of these minerals seem to be petrified pieces of meat.
I don't think meat fossilizes.
There are many such green stones on the Romanian coast of the Black Sea. 10:20 What kind of rock are?
I'm not a geologist, so I don't know for sure. My guess would be the mineral epidote, but that's just a guess.
