Since the first time I heard him I fell in love with his voice, thank you Mr. Cohen for all the dreams that you allowed to wake up in me. My prayers for you.
I have been listening to Leonard Cohen now for over 45 years.... and each time I do is like the first time... full of respect. Thank you Leonard Cohen. RIP beautiful man. xx
- Who can forget this voice ? Who can forget these poems ? Who can forget such a man, such a friend, such a soul... we cry and we love you forever Leonard.
This is one of the 2 or 3 best live video performances by Julie and Perla that I've seen. Since the first time I heard them (12-inch LP,,'So Long Marianne') I've been entranced by their very great contribution to Mr. Cohen's recordings and performances. His gifted musicians give his delivery a professional fullness and frame his lyrics; Julie Christensen and Perla Batalla give life to each song in which they have a lot of voice, and depth on all. Leonard was incredibly fortunate that they joined him; they were stunningly fortunate to place their voices around his, and all three have such a close and very symbiotic relationship on and off stage. --Bud Budder Sportster Budster
+Bud Roberts I think that Leonard Cohen acknowledges this contribution by moving behind Julie and Perla (04:10), thus putting them in the limelight. Very nice gesture!
I hear you ... in the same situation .. I lived through the 70's and totally missed this dude. Loving it though ... late in life. Better late than never :]
My only regret is that I never had the chance to see you in concert. Your music is so beautiful and has given me so much pleasure since the first time I heard you. Sleep in peace Leonard. x
It's too bad you didn't get to see him but his body of work is so vast. As for me, I only saw him once in London, Ontario and it was a wonderful concert. He was a towering figure in his songs and poems. May his memory last for eternity.
Heard Leonard sing this (and many other songs) live in Toronto. This song was completely overwhelming in its beauty. Touching depths that very few other artists get to. His music was sometimes transformative. He had the gift and he honored it.
God bless you man... how many memories you have built for me ... thank you for each and every one of them. Thank you for all the dreams too... thank you for taking me to Vienna with the one I love. Thank you for making me dance crazy, even though I really can't. Thank you for making me believe that love is not waste. Thank you for everything. God bless you my good old friend.
I only discovered Leonard Cohen in August 2016, just a few months before he passed away. I have been listening to him almost everyday since then. I can't get enough of him. ❤🫶❤
I hear his songs since I was a teenager and I feel a great sadness. Great artist dealt with a variety of themes - love, war, holocaust, politics, joy, sadness, sex and more. Thank you.

The elevation of Lorca's poem to the glory of this beautiful song is a grandiose tribute to both poets. Amazing! Thanks Leonard for contributing to the soundtrack of our lives for half a century. As the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inscribed in 2008:"For six decades, Leonard Cohen revealed his soul to the world through poetry and song-his deep and timeless humanity touching our very core. Simply brilliant. His music and words will resonate forever. "
Domie

I was 18 years old when I first heard your voice and l listened to your lyrics of Suzanne, in some place of southern Greece. That was it. I have been in two concerts of yours and I have fond memories from both. I am deeply touched from the words and your songs. It does not matter if I do not understand all the words and verses, as poems are deeply personal. Anybody can attach his/her own meaning to these. The point is the words and songs have a direct impact on me, they speak directly to my heart. Your deeply expressive voice is unique and unsurpassed. You became famous but you remained humble. My first attempts at playing guitar and singing are all about this guy! He has always led me on in my music as has the legacy of Janis Joplin. I bought a Leonard Cohen song book when I was 18 and I learned every fingering, every word from that! And I still have that book!! 40 some years later, I still love this man and his music! I got to see him in concert when he was 75 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. What a privilege!! I will honor him forever as a wonderful Canadian musician! What a loss! Joan. My favorite Christmas song. At Midnight Borde /@@@@@ I was fortunate enough not to meet Leo until I was nearly 50. Until then I was mired in rock'n'roll and the maestro said it was Mozart but to me it sounded like bubble gum. By the age of 50 I had left babyhood and Bermuda behind and returned to my homeland, Iceland. It was in 1988 that I was ready to listen and partake of all of the complex verse and sweet simple music of love and life. And most of all the only religosity that ever made sense to me. Thank you my friend.

The 'song' was most definitely written by him. His interpretation is based on Lorca's "Little Viennese Waltz" which is quite different lyrically, The melody to L Cohen's interpretation is also wonderful..
So many of us lost a dear old friend when you passed, Leonard. My whole life, you had been there, I grew up with your poetry, your gravely voice, your beautiful, cynical, dark, sexy, joyous, audacious words, which were scary and beyond my immaturity at first, and which I grew into and they in turn burrowed into me. And then following my cancer treatment in 2016, while I was in a cancer rehab center, still reeling from the shock of 45 becoming 45, a crazy person at the helm of my beloved country, then you died, Leonard, and although I hadn’t listened to your music in awhile, I sobbed and felt like my world was rocked beyond recognition now, with you gone. Whoever might read this, it may sound like was a loser without a life sitting and listening to Leonard Cohen recordings, but I’d had a career as a singer, a loving husband and accomplished daughter, and a sizable circle of friends , had lived abroad etc etc, whatever, just saying I had a life, a substantial life, and yet when Leonard left it left me feeling for a time like all was hopeless. And yet in your poetry, you never peddled optimism or hope, but rather with that lopsided smirk on your face, you muttered eloquently about darkness and betrayal, sadness and joy, but only the moments of it, never looking very far ahead, only the moments. So why should your vanishing leave such a hole, if you hadn’t been providing us with something to give us hope…maybe your sensitivities about the darkness in us all, the self-serving, the fleeting nature of all things good, maybe the honesty and grace with which you expressed these lower sentiments made us believe your authenticity, gave us hope about the possibility of the human condition, if not about you personally. Maybe you told us about all the ugliness you saw in your own soul, while we only saw the boundless beauty in it. Maybe that alone made us hopeful that even as we recognized that ugliness and darkness within ourselves, from somewhere within us there radiated beauty and love. Oy, how I miss you, Leonard. Thank you for all you gave. I hope that at the end, you felt you‘d had a pretty damn good run.
I was lucky enough to see Leonard in concert in 2009. Before that I had never heard of him I am sorry to say. I fell in love with his music. What a great musician. R.I.P. my friend

This is Leonard's best arrangement of this song, the trumpet at the end is masterful. All the musicians are fantastic.
