What a great video that you have done there it will be very good to find out when that train will be up and running down at Mornington I tried to find out a couple times they keep saying they're doing testing
I hate to be that person but J541 crossed the West Gate Bridge in 2007 on it's way from Menzies Creek to Maldon, meaning K163 wasn't the first. Still a fantastic video regardless.
It seems strange that it wouldn't either go under its own steam or be towed. Is the trackwork from Baxter unusable? I also looked at all those tyres and imagined going in for fuel. "just check the air in the tyres for me mate".
Looking at the satelitte shot on google maps the track headed to Baxter is gone. There's a set of buffers on the up side (towards Melbourne) and the rail has been cut short of the roundabout on the Moorooduc Hwy. If you look you'll see a pair of white what I assume to be sleepers, then to the left of it a friction buffer.
Great video, but I have two question relating to the steam train crossing the bridge, 1 what was the first bg loco to cross the west gate and what was the first train to cross it?
The buffer disks were cut to allow clearance for passenger cars with diaphrams. The concertina bit between the carriages. Some locos had a butcher job done on them, I recall the K class that is stored as the State Mine at Wonthaggi. Some disks were just cut in half.
Marcus, this is in Victoria, Australia, about 50 kilometres southeast of Melbourne, on part of what used to be the Victorian Railways Mornington branch line.
Great to see the old engines being restored and brought back to use.
That Kenworth T908 was just purring along awesome prime mover
Majestic footage over the West Gate 👍
THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR DETAILED VIDEO
Excellent coverage of a rare event!

The track between Baxter and moorooduc has been abandoned for 30+ years and in disrepair. No way a train could run on it
I supposed if they refurbished the rail connection with the Stoney Point line, then the locomotive could come on its own power to Mornington.

2:29 What caused the buffer discs to be broken....or are they cut away deliberately?
9:06 The front pair are the same.

I would've thought that it would be easier to just run K-163 down to Frankston, or even Baxter on the working rail line & then truck it from there.
Do you have any live train tracking software?
Where is this?

@@distantscot945 Thanks!
I don’t see many Aussie youtubers I’m Aussie
The Mornington line should be reopened to Baxter
