Here's why you shouldn't buy gifts that are not asked for, especially for hobbyists (unless you're 100% sure you already know what someone would like as a gift):
Right now, I am 21 years old, and a huge Lego freak, I have been for all my life. For my 20th birthday my parents asked me what I wanted as a present. I said it didn't really matter to me, as long as it was either useful (like a new backpack), just money or something from LEGO. I even made some suggestions which were within a certain price range.
Since I was going to do a IT education that year, I got a programmable Lego-like plastic robot, probably worth like €40,- (what I expected to be the price range). But it wasn't Lego, so it just sat aside my Lego, barely opened, getting dusty. Eventually I gave it to my brother who was also going to do IT.
It's not that I hated the gift, I hated the idea of having not-actually Lego amongst my real Lego. Ask someone who is a huge Lego fan like me and he'll more than probably agree with me.
What felt even worse for me, was that when the gift was still wrapped it felt like it was an actual Lego box. So I was pretty excited to see what I got. And naturally was very disappointed to see it was something I didn't asked for.
I even pointed out many times to my parents that they shouldn't buy something that looked Lego like. It would have to be Lego, because I am strongly against Lego knock-offs. It has been my hobby for my whole life, and I don't want to have anything to do with things that aren't 'real'.
Luckily they learned from the mistake, and for my 21st birthday my parents (and grandparents) got me the Fiat 500 set. I was, and still am super happy 😊.
When you ask someone what you could get them for a present, the best thing you can do is either get them what they point out. Or if you think it Is too expensive either group up with other people or give (nicely packed) money. Especially if it is something related to an expensive hobby. Otherwise you will only disappoint that person. And with that, yourself as well. Usually people (with hobbies) know exactly what they would want as a gift. And they can probably give you guidelines on what you should buy. But you should also listen to what they tell you what NOT to buy. Usually it will be brand-related.
I could talk about this for longer, but basically don't disappoint someone with something they don't ask for. Especially if it looks like it but in the end clearly isn't the same thing.
Or debate it in the comments👇

And this is why moral selfishness (A.K.A. Objectivism) is the most consistent moral philosophy. The morally selfish produce things. Those products make other peoples' lives better. Those people tell their friends, who in turn buy more of those products. The morally selfish become rich. The rich have money to give to LifeVestInside...Capitalism is awesome!

Is it me or does this video say that the only reason to give is to help yourself? You shouldn't just want to help people to make your self happy, but to actually help others. But I guess this video is doing good because it is making people more generous but I think the intentions behind them are selfish ones. Then again I guess this is the opposite of hedonism in the sense that you are making yourself happy by giving to others and not yourself so I guess this way of thinking is still beneficial. There are some cool facts though so thanks for making it, sorry for the very pessimistic outlook on the video and sorry if I caused offence. But maybe teaching that giving is about other people instead of yourself is an idea for another video?

      hi Soctt
      This is called enlightened selfishness
in the same time you are tacking care of some one else and your self as well
      what is wrong with that?
      both sides gain from that
and any way in the process you learn about others and there needs
and it is ment to move people that are not use to help or give get out of ther shell, so you give them an intensive
and thy learn that it is a beatifically thing to do
