easy way to remove the original lacquer if you don't have the space for an angle-grinder (and dust) is to use paint remover. Apply thick, cover with aluminium foil or stretch-foil and just sit back and wait a few hours.

I was gonna do that, but I couldn't find the correct paint thinner in the shops around here, so I went with the angle grinder this time
