Fun fact: White Pawn's chess pieces were the aggressive one (rook and bishop, which will how as far as they want) which explains her energetic and cheerful nature, because rook and bishop can strike down any enemies in front of them or diagonal from them.
But at the contrary, Black Pawn's chess pieces are strategic ones (Knight and King, which has limited move), which matches with her mature and quiet nature, where she's thinking a good strategy to hamper down the enemy while staying alive
Also, their magic candy, the queen, is white, because that's the strongest piece on the board, able to go everywhere she goes, which is White Pawn's piece, cause she goes with aggressive plays and strike down the enemy from long distances

I find it absolutely adorable that white pawn always maintains direct physical contact with her twin and judging from white's large array of(^ ヮ^ )and black's consistent (T - T) it's safe to assume who has the say in their decisions. It's like a case of "I was born a full minute before you, therefore, I'm in charge!"

I feel like one of the dialogs "Don't hide pieces in your pocket! Do not hide things in your pocket." its a reference to that meme of "The smart kid not understanding how hes losing to me. Me who has been eating his pieces." but hiding it instead of eating it
that meme came way after their release... it's more obviously based on the concept of cheating in chess

Well I can sense why the pieces have their colors and not all white...
The bishop and rook are white because they're normally what you use to check the enemy king and can be very powerful in the center of the chessboard. The knight and king are black because they can be kinda weak... But can be very powerful during the endgame.

I think they are both boys. It's what the pawns represent I think. At least that's what my friend told me.
Pretty common head cannon that white is a girl, and pawns dont mean they are male
Edit: Spelling, and that pawns represent the soldiers, the ones who are least important, the ones sent into the front lines, while the ones more important chill in the back
