  • The History of the Bulova Accutron Watch
The first Accutron model was named the Spaceview 214 and featured the revolutionary tuning fork in an open dial. It was released in 1960 and was invented by Max Hetzel who was the first person to use an electronic device in a wrist watch.

Thanks Dude! We owe you a beer! My first Accutron was in 1962 but it was lost during my Vietnam tour. Just obtained another via eBay to give to my son. Magnificent watches!!!

Great video on a great historical watch however just one correction; the first Accutrons were not spaceviews, they were dial watches like most other watches of the day. Because of the high price compared to other watches, sales were slow so the first spaceviews were created to show the difference between an Accutrons and a conventional watch, and were only for display purposes in the Bulova dealer's showcase. Customers saw the see through crystal, liked it, and the rest is history,,,

Cool video. Thanks! Oh, by the way, the "c" is silent in oscillation

There is another aspect missing. In 1972 they made the Accuquartz replacing the transistors with a quartz system. The tuning fork became passive and the quartz mechanism oscillated the Tuning fork. Still had the pawl fingers and jewels. The Bulova calibres 2241 and 2242 were a higher accuracy movement with 14 jewels and a thinner movement

I wonder if Bulova, or watch buffs also know that another NASA scientist from the NACA days... on the first go/no go committee, was in charge of the SRB Rockets of the shuttle program, Viking, the single brain behind the theory, math, and creation of the vehicles that went faster than sound to begin with.... and continued to do so quietly up until a few months go when he gifted the design of the newest jet that everybody’s trying to copy that goes faster than sound without making an audible boom on the ground (overland supersonic travel is now REAL), and essentially the first real rocket scientist... Percy “Bud” Bobbitt, Director of Aeronautics NASA Ret. and founder of Eagle Aeronautics Inc. (that’s a mouthful)

I think I figured out how the index wheel teeth were made on the original accutrons, but I don't know how they cut the wheel off and made it so thin.

That “Bulova” worn by Dave Scott was a Universal Geneve (owned by Bulova at that time) with a Bulova dial stuck on. Bulova was trying to get NASA to buy American and replace Omega.
