On the F1 transmission, theres 2 small shafts that move gears up and down. They have bronze bushings. Of course they wear off and the shaft start to have way more play up and down. That is enough for the electronics of the transmission to "see" it as an error. And yes, gets stuck in neutral as a fail safe. Can you get those bushings? Absolutely. In Italy only and very expensive. Is there way around? Yes there is

Probably a failed F1 sensor. I've had that fail on several Ferrari with the older F1 setup (F355, F360 and 612). Can be fine and suddenly fail, even while driving, at which point the car drops to neutral because the F1 computer doesn't know what gear it's in.

I did some research and asked people on UA-cam about the repairs and when I was finished with the project it cost me about 3 hours of time and a whopping $87 in parts.
The reason for disconnecting the ground first is that if you disconnect the positive first any slip of the wrench where it touches anything metal will create a short and arc weld said wrench to the car. Thus removing the ground first has been the rule since the stone age of automobiles before they had computers.

Yes there is
That or the sensors and servos involved in moving and placing the shafts...
Thank you for reverting back to stock wheels. Looks 100x better.
Yeah black wheels generally look like shit
Best video to date! The Specialized ECU guys were amazingly knowledgeable.
I am in no way a petrol head, but your systematic, careful, sometimes intuitive and always curious way of dealing with these car problems is brilliant to watch. This is an especially good episode, highlighting a company you'd find it hard to believe existed otherwise.
Nothing more expensive than a cheap exotic car.
That's exactly what I was thinking!
These guys are buying 60-80k exotics , probably spend like 15-20k on the high end fixing it , and still be 30ish k cheaper than the cheapest “regular” same model exotic available.
@@PurpleTBSS Well, it's worked out for Sam so far. But he is definitely spinning the roulette wheel with each one he buys. Sooner or later, he's bound to get a bad one. Although, seeing how he deals with it could make for a good video!
Have you met Tiffany at Spearmint Rhino?
females
"The only thing worse than cheap junk is expensive junk".
Stealing this.
This was a super interesting video.
Also you need to replace the "Seat Fault Sensor" to get rid of that seat power-train squeak @14:22 ... $3000 from the dealership
This was a truly excellent video, Sam. Specialized really knows their stuff, and I love the detailed explanation of the ECU’s and how they work. I have seen so many people get hosed at the dealer over ECU and key issues like this, what a great find
love the ingenuity that these guys had - saw a niche in the market and got in there. the running bmw halfcuts are a great idea - love seeing custom made tools/test rigs.
Sam, you just made Specialized ECU Repair $250.000 in free Advertising.
I think it's a lot more than $250 lol. I'd say thousands
@@ReubenHorner I think he's saying he just bought something from them from watching this video
"Free advertising", do you really think companies dont give discounts/free service for being featured? Its grey area illegal due to the new FCC laws but almost every UA-camr does it
@@ReubenHorner in countries like Germany and Italy, they use periods to separate the thousands and comma to separate the decimals. eg. 25M and 59 cents = 25.000.000,59.
I used to work for Porsche.
Pretty good trade. I like how this guy was an ECU expert like vtuned is the body expert. What luck he has such talent so close by?
Lesson i learned from buying a car that sits a while changing engine oil and not doing the same with transmission is a bad idea the transmission filter was clogged with the old oil and broke after driving it .
Old trans oil shouldn't clog a filter, probably something else going on
It wouldnt clog unless it was full of shavings
Aye Sammy not to be negative or anything I love ya (no homo) but if you really want something that helps invest in a fire extinguisher it's an old Ferrari old Ferraris tend to get hot when they're past 5 years old.
Fuel lines and oil lines also power steering lines must be maintained any significant leeks and you end up with a rolling dumpster fire.
Awesome shop to show! Specialized ECU is one of those gems that are great for car restorers out here! Thanks as always Sam for keeping my interest in working on cars. I hope someday to teach my boys how to restore a really cool car like you have!
Wow, this is really cool to watch. Not cool to see your car has gremlins, but cool to watch you work thru them as they arise. My heart sinks when yours does, and jumps when things seem to going good. Thanks for sharing and documenting this! I can't wait for the next episode!
That was the deck lid open light and Ferrari's wont allow you to go into gear if your deck lid is open.
That's what I thought that symbolized! Didnt look like a trans.. looked like the deck lid! You'd think Sam would know the meaning of the dummy lights by now!
That's why he does videos jajaja
Deck lid!!
Probably a failed F1 sensor. I've had that fail on several Ferrari with the older F1 setup (F355, F360 and 612). Can be fine and suddenly fail, even while driving, at which point the car drops to neutral because the F1 computer doesn't know what gear it's in.
Ok I don't want to say the obvious but since you stated that you tightened all the grounds but why do you leave the battery connector loose? That is a big no-no.
@Hay Mamacita I was diagnosing a Arctic Cat Z1 Turbo snow mobile that was intermittently have a bog at full throttle and the gauge would randomly stop working. Wouldn't you know it? Loose battery terminals were the culprit.
@@garnetcampbell4389 I was working on an oil rig in South Dakota back in '83 and there was this terrible storm and wind, sounded like the onset of armageddon. Then the sky shook and all the stars shown through the clouds. Then and the face of what looked like a giant beetle came down and stared at me, moving its mandibles around real slow and menacing. I realized it was trying to communicate to me, so I looked it right in it's beady compound little eyes and it said this "Tighten your battery terminals and try again."
What an amazing company! Glad they saw the need and our helping owners! Great video!
You have a great channel. Loved when you got the Audi straightened out and sorted. I'm grinding my teeth watching this Ferrari project. I wish you the best of luck. Keep up the great content. We appreciate it.
I think the Ferrari sensed that you are bypassing the dealership and decided to shut you down man!
- My favourite part, hearing the quality Ferrari noises:
- Creeeeeeeeeweeweeeeewench
- Q U A L I T Y
Big mistake was removing the battery connection after you had the computer all in sync
Glad you are doing your own work because it truly does give you the opportunity to know your car. Recently my wife's 2015 Harley trike's reverse motor took a dump and when I called the dealership to see what it would cost to repair/rebuild it they quoted me $1624!! Wow!!!. I did some research and asked people on UA-cam about the repairs and when I was finished with the project it cost me about 3 hours of time and a whopping $87 in parts.
Not supposed to disconnect the positive cable first. It can cause a voltage spike & damage computers.
he drives the car before even warming it up after its been sitting for a while lol. no wonder his car break down
The reason for disconnecting the ground first is that if you disconnect the positive first any slip of the wrench where it touches anything metal will create a short and arc weld said wrench to the car. Thus removing the ground first has been the rule since the stone age of automobiles before they had computers.
This is too cool. I was confident it was an ecu/computer issue. I had no idea it was this complex lol... SER has a phenomenal shop!
That seat sounds like a zuzula horn LOL....
Bummer on the transmission fault
WOw, your neighbor got to drive a Samcrac powered Ferrari!
And he just wanted a picture of it.
Keep it up you got this.
I was one of the guys asking for this video to get understanding of how these ecu experts test and fix ecus. Thanks for that! It was very informative and interesting!
Your videos are very inspiring! I would give up in the very beginning :) keep up!
I just want to see this car drive with no faults, thanks for sharing Samcrac. I can't wait for the next video!
Thanks Sam and have a awesome weekend. Between you and Goonz Quad on UA-cam I hardly ever watch TV. Even spent my last holiday in Antiqua in the Caribbean chilling with alcohol and watching yours and goonz quad channels. Best thing ever. Cheers from London UK
Rock the car back and forth, then try to put in gear. If goes into gear than it's your shift sensor/linkage...
