I read a book about people who had survived suicide attempts after jumping off bridges and buildings. Every single one of them said the last thing they thought about as soon as they jumped was how they wished they didn’t let go of the railing.
@@noneone2u Being dead was pretty fucking boring. Had to kill 230 babies just to pay the guy to take me across the river, you dont even wanna know how many baby fingers is needed to pass over from the after. Whole lotta baby fingers, and they don't accept the white ones.
I watched two people jump off the Coronado bridge while I was at port in San Diego over the course of one year. You just can't prevent truly suicidal people from doing it. If they don't have a bridge they'll get it done regardless. Just smiling, being kind and asking a stranger how their day was will go alot further than these so-called "preventative measures."
Well said Collin. I agree 100%! Kindness is a gift everyone can afford. Always be kind to the person standing next to you, you don't know what they are going through.
Mental health and general kindness is extreamly helpful but making areas less accessible to suicide attempts helps reduce suicide attempts. A lot of suicide attempts are driven by impulse and deterants or no areas to easily access places to jump can give people time to reflect and not make the decision.
As someone who has attempted suicide twice, and has suffered from severe mental health issues, I respect the way that you went about explaining the history of the bridge and everything. Great video
A huge part of the problem is there's a still a stigma that goes with admitting to being suicidal, and asking for help. You're suddenly treated differently (potentially losing a lot of freedoms), and a lot of "friends" suddenly are not around. One of the things that pisses me off the most, is the falsity that people that commit suicide, or are considering it, are cowardly or selfish. It's just the opposite. People that find themselves in that situation are often willing to sacrifice themselves, to spare their friends and loved ones any more hurt or stress, than they feel they may have already caused. It is a dark, scary, and lonely place to be when one feels that way. To anyone that feels that way - you're not alone, and you're important and needed - even if you don't believe you are.
After losing my wife to cancer, six months ago, I can totally understand and empathize with those who wanted to end it all. It's been a struggle for me, and my wife's best friend who also would rather now be dead. But I push on, and pray for help.
@@channelbree Thanks, it's been a struggle. We were married for 36 1/2 years. She died rather quickly. From the time of her cancer diagnoses which didn't appear to be too bad, until her death was only four months. Before that, she was fine for the most part. We had a great marriage and I don't recall us arguing much, if at all. We said "I love you" to each other at least three times a day, and in fact, the last words she ever said to me (and I recorded it) was "I love you too" (she struggled to say that), and two days later, she stopped breathing. I honestly don't know how I will go on in life without her, it's a huge struggle. Losing a spouse is honestly far worse than anyone imagines. I watched my brother die, I watched my mother die. I endured the death of beloved pets as well as friends and my wife's family and friends... and the loss of my wife is 100 times worse than all of them combined. I have cried just about every day for seven months now. BUT, I keep praying for help... even though I wish I was with her.
@@EliJaezalyn Thanks, it's the toughest thing I will ever have to endure. Seven months of crying almost every day, plus the four months while she had cancer, I would go for walks as I seen her decline rapidly and be crying then.... so basically, a year of crying so far. I hope something happens in my life to bring back some sort of happiness again, but one doesn't brush off 36 1/2 years of marriage overnight. I feel totally lost and alone right now and the thought of jumping off a bridge like this is very tempting. But I keep praying and pushing ahead, one lonely day at a time...
@@NeilRoy my condolences for your loss. It's so tough. When you admit to being suicidal they treat you like a criminal and it makes it even worse. I've been through some things, have been sexaully assaulted, emotionally neglected by my mother, mentally abused by my father, and abandoned. I have ptsd and I totally understand why people would want to jump. I'm glad I never ended it. This is so sad.
Respect for knowing your personal safety limit, and not crossing further just for the camera. Adventures are best told by those who come back from them, not from 'found footage' of people who didn't.
There’s a bridge like this only much higher that spans a roadway, river and park in Edmonton Canada appropriately called The High Level Bridge and years ago the walkway on either side was completely fenced off because of jumpers I was told. Very sad indeed !! 😖

As a child, I used to live near a bridge in Scotland called the Erskine Bridge that spans the River Clyde. It was 150ft above the river and, on a couple of occassions, when the tide went out, we saw bodies lying in the mud flats on their backs with their arms up because of rigour mortis. Really disturbing and I always felt so sorry for people whose life came to that end. Really good of you to put the National Suicide Prevention Helpline number at the end of your video.
Your very kind, showing respect for those who have died at this bridge having had 2 great younger brothers that died by suicide it’s the most horrific way of knowing your younger brothers didn’t like this life , so they went in to the next life. There is the Valley Creek Rd. railroad tunnel in which a supposed murder-suicide happened back in the 19th Century (young woman and her baby born out-of-wedlock) who jumped down the ventilation shaft to her (and her child's) death. Supposedly the tunnel is haunted to this day.
I live just outside Downingtown (KOP) and never knew that, that’s terrible I’m sorry to hear, something about the area seems pretty sparse, maybe isolated... Meanwhile nearby you have some of the most vibrant areas like West Chester, Exton, KOP, etc.
That would make a great walking bridge. Sadly, if someone wants to check out, they will find a place and a way. We have a very popular tourist area in my city which is part of the Park Service and there is a a beautiful scenic spot looking off the mountain. It is very popular for photos. My brother is a police officer and says people jump from there very frequently. You rarely hear about it in the news. Depression can be overwhelming. It is traumatic for those who have to go retrieve the person too. PTSD is high for all first responders. These situations affect more people than one can realize. Life is worth living. Seek help. People love you. Don’t give up.
If their going to jump from a bridge they should do it from a bridge like the Golden Gate where their body gets washed out to sea and someone doesn't have to recover their body and experience that trauma.
@@rayjames6096 their taxes paid for the upkeep of the road and bridges. their taxes also pay the city worker to clean up. there is even a death tax. seems to me it is all paid for up front.

I fell through a old train trestle bridge in Missouri when I was 6 years old in 1981. College kids would tear up the board's. We had to cross 2 times a day to get to and from our bus stop. I hit a tree on my way down and fell head first but landed on my feet. The stream was very high. I broke my arm it snapped through my skin. I'm so lucky I survived it, I have severe trauma crossing any bridge now.
We had a tree that stood at the end of the Cul-De-Sac at my family home . The road that led to that tree was exactly 1km long . On my worse days I would imagine aiming my car toward the tree and ramming it at full throttle. Never thinking much of it , i was surprised to hear from an elderly neighbor who had been living on our street longer than my family had , tell me of another neighbor who did exactly that . Rammed his car full speed into the tree at the end of the Cul De Sac. Years later my brother calls me to tell me he heard a car shooting past the house and then a loud "bang" , went outside to find a bloke had done just rammed his BMW into the same tree . Airbag or no airbag ...at the speed he was travelling , he did not survive , and my brother was left traumatized . Years later , the tree's now gone and the Cul-De-Sac is no longer but an access point to another road . However , I cannot help to wonder if it wasn't something more sinister in the shadows than just coincidence that was beckoning others , like me , to join it in it's fate . Lonely spirits . Who knows?!
If our thoughts are kind of an electric signal. I could imagine peoples with similar thought process or in the same dark place would basically be able to "sync" up with each other.
I’ve been depressed the past 1.5 years. I haven’t searched anything about suicide or depression and I keep getting recommendations on stuff like this. I’m 45yo and never with any kind of depression. Something just clicked in my brain and shut off my happiness. People say “just don’t be sad” or “go see a doctor” I wish it was that easy. Nothing seems to bring me joy. And I honestly feel like I won’t ever be happy again. The rest of my life I will feel miserable and sad for no reason I can explain. I do have some chronic health problems but I was always able to tough through it. I just think I’m tired of being tough. I don’t wanna die but I wouldn’t be mad if I went to sleep and never woke up. I could never kill myself in such a brutal fashion. I don’t want my loved ones to see me mutilated. When people jump or shoot them selves I can’t imagine what loneliness and sadness they were going through. I know mine is bad but it’s NOTHING to what they’re feeling. I pray that everyone could get over their depression. It’s no way to live. It’s exhausting and take’s every ounce of energy from you.
Hey. Bit odd of me to say this but get your blood checked. I was really down and sad. Come to find out I was really badly anemic. Don't know if you're a lady or what but still worth getting it checked out. Could be another health issue too. Hope you don't mind me commenting this ❤️
There's a short documentary about suicides on the Golden Gate bridge, a number of them survive the fall and apparently every single one said that the instant they let go of the bridge they regretted it.
The GG bridge is an example I use with people The reason people want to jump off bridges to kill themselves is because they feel they are suffering and their lives have so many problems But the nature of the mind adjusts accordingly, relative to each situation they're in The moment they go from depressed and in misery at The top of The bridge ,the moment after when they're falling , all of their previous issues instantly goes out the window and the mind will suddenly declare ' UH OH! WE GOT A BIGGER PROBLEM!!!'
Human nature to want to live, how do you explain people who kill themselves by hanging? Some even touching thr floor can change their minds any second.
@@gtd-9722 so true. I panicked and cried 20 minutes after consuming two bottles of pills thinking that I’ll never see my mother again. I regretted at the moment but sometimes looking back on it, I wish I died
When you are suicidal and standing at a tall structure, it seems inviting to jump and end it all once you look down. The suicidal people just want the pain to stop. Some overcame it; some chose to jump, unfortunately.
My brother was friends with they guy that committed. You won’t know how much your matter until your gone it’s sad to think about. He was a really good football player and was respected much respect to him. R.I.P🙏🕊

Are they really holes that just spaces between the tracks it's normal on any set of tracks. Maybe originally the bridge just had tracks and rails and they didn't have much tar or cement to hold attraction place probably that would make the bridge lighter
My Mother and my Little Sister both committed suicide.. My Mom at 46 with a gunshot. My Sister at 43 jumped off a cliff near Hoover Dam.. People don't do this to your family! You have to call anyone for help.. ❤ Always listen..
My Uncle went out to SF California from NYC, and he jumped from the Golden Gate bridge many years ago. Family and friends still feel the loss. R.I.P. to the folks who sadly lost their lives on this bridge in the video🙏🌷
I shouldn’t be watching this because of my constant suicidal thoughts. But glad it was recommended to me because I’m here to listen and learn. And I’m still here and not going to give up just yet.
In my neck of the woods, we have a road bridge over the Clyde river. It too is a magnet for souls who can’t face life any more. They have now put phones on the walkway leading to the highpoint directly linked to councilors 24/7 who are trained in this situation. Maybe an idea for your bridge.
This is my hometown. Its always exciting to see someone you have been watching on YT pay a visit right where you live. Downingtown is pretty historical and is dotted with many historical buildings/ruins like this bridge. I am not afraid to say that, as a local, I also made it to the top of this bridge to get a peak as to what is up there. Its pretty big landmark within our town. I heard about this suicide not long after it happened. Its always really a shame when people do these kind of things, but I can also say that I relate. I have been going through many dark chapters in life myself. I just keep forging on as best as I can. One quote sticks to me from time to time, "things tend to work out in the end- if things are not working out, then it is not the end."
I actually drove under this bridge yesterday on my way to the VFW in Downingtown. I must say historically this bridge is awesome and I really admire it cuz I'm such a big history buff but it is very sad that there's also a dark side to this bridge with all the tragedy that's centered around it unfortunately 💯
Really interesting video and a haunting place. I imagine that it's really eerie at night, too. I live on the South Coast of the UK and we have a cliff nearby - "Beachy Head". It's reportedly the third most 'popular' suicide spot in the world (not sure who did the survey, but hey...). Chalk sea cliffs over 500ft tall, so a near-guaranteed fatal fall. Most years see at least 20-25 deaths, but there have been many more than that some years. Can't imagine what mindset you'd need to be in to throw yourself off anything; desperately sad for the person, their friends and family - and the people who are tasked with retrieving the bodies.
If people want to stop suicide's start making friends (real friends not pretend friends = big difference) with people that want to end it (no head games). Wanting to help a person means more than just making a commitment on helping that person. Pretending to help (psychiatrist) only masks the problem worse because it gives a false front with no good out comes on solving the problem (job's, privacy, school "college's especially", phone calls "collections people", marriages, etc...). Suicide happens whether people like it or not = who can u help today.
Often times, it's a deep immense internal pain/sadness, that never ends. You feel hopeless, everything feels pointless and there's no light, only darkness. Sometimes you don't even feel sad anymore, just numb and dead inside, or you feel like you're drowning, suffocating, unable to breathe, and you just want the pain to stop, even for a moment, but it never goes away! So the only way to stop it...... is to end it all.
I live in lancaster PA . l never forget l met a guy in out park city mall and he had a skate board a had no legs and only one arm . He would get around on that skate board. I felt so bad for him . He was looking at these steps up the mall and was trying to figure out how to get up them . I had my little boy with me. But i asked him if he wanted me to carry him up the stairs . which i did and when we got to the top he thanked me . He told me he was depressed about things when he was a younger and went out his window and grabbed some electric wires and it Electrocuted him . and he lost his legs and one arm the whole way . But l would see him on that skate board and give him rides around town when i would see him . Depression is a bad thing
Ah, yes. There is a “Suicide Bridge” in Pasadena, CA. It was built in 1913, had an accidental death on its construction when a worker fell. It is officially known as the “History Colorado Street Bridge”, but it had lots of suicides on it (especially in the 1930s). Today it has high fenced and security cameras to prevent more suicides, though it doesn’t stop them completely.
Nothing is bad enough that ending your life is the answer. You have a purpose here. You are loved. Your story isn't over yet!! Reach out to someone. There is help!
Well it's like people always say. I can understand why people who seriously contemplate suicide won't talk about it to anyone. Everyone else who has never had such feelings will not understand what it feels like and will most likely look at you like "are your crazy there is so much to live for?" and yes that is true. There is a lot to live for if it's reachable from the position you are in. As said I can understand when someone wants to commit suicide, I've been down that road myself. The only thing I don't like is people jumping infront of Trains or something as you are dragging someone else into it that has nothing to do with it other then that it should be prevented but there have to be better ways to do it. Just talking about it or seeing a therapist isn't gonna really help that much, atleast it didn't help me at all I had to pull myself out of that hole and many don't have the strenght to do that by themselves. I can assure you that if there is someone suicidal in a community chances are that nobody will understand if being told and people try to be there for them but that just ain't enough on it's own.
You are a very kind hearted to show respect for the families who may have lost a loved one here. It is obvious that the families have not forgotten judging by the flowers and personal belongings that are there. You did a fantastic job Chris.
Me also, I survived because I put my trust in JESUS . It has been many years and I live a good life. JESUS IS MY ANCHOR. I am happy that you lived! GOD BLESS You! 🍃⚘🍃
That's so freaking painful I can't imagine jumping off a tall bridge and plummeting into the hard ground and being in horrible pain just to realise you're still alive
Very touching to see how the people care by putting up the signs and messages, in hopes of changing the mind of someone who may be planning to jump❤️-loved the historical images, amazing👏
Personal opinion: The bridge has a lot of history and it shouldn’t have to be torn down because two people decided to take their lives over a 7 yr period
You did a great job here. Respectful and informative. Downingtown school district is experiencing a "point cluster", an uptick of suicides in a geographical area. The subject needs to be addressed often. Thank you for this.
You’re very true, as someone who graduated from the downingtown school district, I can say that over the time I was there the school had a problem with suicide. It still has a problem with them but hopefully the district is trying to use the right techniques to make sure that every student matters

It's just a meat sack ... We can reset on the other side and then try again. I think this world sucks and has nothing to offer but pain and disappointment sometimes. People have No idea what can happen to a person here..
You have to hang tough and stick it out in life. Committing suicide is the worst thing a person can do. So as far as resetting on the other side, I'm not so sure about that. You could come back as an insect or an animal of sorts.
Here in Michigan it's the Mackinac Bridge that people jump from. They keep these quiet because it would upset the tourism industry if people found out. It's not uncommon to find someone's vehicle parked half way across and the owner gone. I heard they do the same with the San Fransisco Bridge. Japan has a forest they have to patrol because people go there to hang themselves from the trees.
I cant believe you walked on that. Be careful bro. This looks like your most dangerous trip yet and that says alot for the man that hiked to the top of Mount St Helens
“You matter!” “Don’t give up!” > Minimum wage starts at base $13.20 an hour. > most entry jobs require diplomas and shit. > the government is actively taking advantage of you and uses you. > housing and apartment rates have gone through the roof. > society is degrading and looks down on people with any slight sign of mental or physical disability or disorder *chuckles* That’s a good attempt! Great effort!
current society is the root problem, but i see everyone thinking like removing these bridges and pushing for dumb phone hotlines will help fix it. i can't get into the head of these people fooling themselves.

To end your life in such an horrific way is beyond comprehension. So very sad 😞 Thanks for the visit Chris💙🌟🙏🏻
I live in San Francisco. On average, 30 people commit suicide every year by jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge, few survive. Some survivors said as they were falling, they regretted their decision and thought their problems could be resolved. A suicide net was approved in 2014. It's construction began in 2018, has had several delays, and is expected to be completed end of 2023. Cost-$206 million. The bridge in this video is extremely dangerous given it's deterioration. I say tear it down, or create barriers at each end to prevent access.
I live about 20 miles from there! I have been on that old bridge a few times because I am fascinated with its design. There were holes in it 10 years ago. Very cool bridge, would love to see it restored to be useful and safe.
Thanks for bringing more awareness to a very big and growing problem in this day and age. With what the world is going through right now, it's amazing we haven't had more..
As someone who is frequently suicidal, I would say that closing a bridge will not deter anyone that is determined to end their life. I think what people are doing, turning it in to a place of hope, is a much better approach.
100%. I am the same way, everywhere I drive or walk I look at the world as tools I can end my life with. Buildings and bridges to jump from, train stations, rivers, etc. People will always find another way. :/
You say this, but in actuality, it's about systemically making it harder for people to end their lives in the easiest ways possible. That way they're encouraged to stay alive.
@@Seawitch555 it's about systemic analysis, not individual circumstance. If you reduce all of the easy ways for a person to access something, consumption therefore decreases. At the individual level, it depends on your determination. If you are not that determined, say you have brief suicidal urges, you're far more likely to snap and eventually pick up that gun on your closet and blow your brains out. However, if you take away that gun, the urges don't go away, but you're going to at least have to spend some time thinking of another way to end your life. That's could be enough time for someone to get help, or at least keep them alive for some amount of time.
Thought it was another such bridge in Portland OR. It’s sad that bridges have, for so long, been marred by being used for ppl wanting to end themselves
I grew up and still live about a half mile from the bridge. The town is actually called Dowingtown, not ton. Technically the bridge is just outside the Boro in East Caln if I am right. When I was about 5 or 6, in the early 80's, I remember seeing a train go over it. There was s trolley that went under it that connected Downingtown to nearby West Chester. The trail at the base of it loosely follows part of that old trolley line. There are some ruins along that trail. When did you film this? I ask because I was coming home from work a little while back and saw two people on the bridge. I may have seen you. Neat stuff. I love your videos and it was cool to see you in my neck of the woods. Keep up the great videos.
In my area there's a bridge I go under on the way to work every day. This one particular morning on the way to work I noticed a young man hanging from it, pretty sad really. I found out later that it was a young man of 24 that split up with his girlfriend and decided he couldn't live anymore. Life is so fickle man, he was so young.
You always find such interesting things to cover and your narration is great. That’s part of what sets you apart from the other channels that travel and vlog about different places and attractions. Edit: Question for any train aficionados, regarding those repeating metal frames over the top of the bridge. We’re they used to support cables for electric powered trains from above, or were they used for signage, lights, or something else similar?
sad…permanent solution to a temporary problem. on the other hand it’s still a beautiful bridge. i love how things were built back in the day and were built to last. i hope it gets restored.
Life is sometimes not a temporary problem. Sometimes you're born with the bad hand and you can't get yourself out of the situation. That's why many people live with depression and severe depression caused by their environment (myself included.) Some people get lucky and find a "life anchor" (someone or something to keep them going) but sometimes they don't. Therapy and counseling only does so much. My life anchors at the moment are my parents and my cats. Literally the only reason I'm still here.
I use this road often to go from Quarry rd to West Chester often and drove by this signs recently but didn't know about that and didn't put two and two together,I always admire the engeneering of this construction but it's really sad specially for family and friends thanks for sharing

Agreed but to say suicide is a selfless act is not true

It was 150ft above the river and, on a couple of occassions, when the tide went out, we saw bodies lying in the mud flats on their backs with their arms up because of rigour mortis. there are many suicides that have happened in Downingtown, and attempted suicides, with and without the bridge. It’s a huge problem in our area.
The tunnel wasn't built till the 20th century. Sounds like folklore to me
I live just outside Downingtown (KOP) and never knew that, that’s terrible I’m sorry to hear, something about the area seems pretty sparse, maybe isolated...

There should also be some form of "Right to Die".
If their going to jump from a bridge they should do it from a bridge like the Golden Gate where their body gets washed out to sea and someone doesn't have to recover their body and experience that trauma.

There's a short documentary about suicides on the Golden Gate bridge, a number of them survive the fall and apparently every single one said that the instant they let go of the bridge they regretted it.
not true..only 1-2% survive. it's like jumping off a building.
The GG bridge is an example I use with people
The reason people want to jump off bridges to kill themselves is because they feel they are suffering and their lives have so many problems
But the nature of the mind adjusts accordingly, relative to each situation they're in
The moment they go from depressed and in misery at The top of The bridge ,the moment after when they're falling , all of their previous issues instantly goes out the window and the mind will suddenly declare ' UH OH! WE GOT A BIGGER PROBLEM!!!'
Human nature to want to live, how do you explain people who kill themselves by hanging? Some even touching thr floor can change their minds any second.

The suicidal people just want the pain to stop. Some overcame it; some chose to jump, unfortunately.

That’s a good quote, thank you for sharing it.
Wow that's sad
:(
If people want to stop suicide's start making friends (real friends not pretend friends = big difference) with people that want to end it (no head games).

Only feeling bad for that poor worker
When was the barrier put up?

Here in Michigan it's the Mackinac Bridge that people jump from. They keep these quiet because it would upset the tourism industry if people found out.
Waste of money. Sadly, people will just find another structure to jump from.

@@linusmlgtips2123 does that actually work though? I’ve never been discouraged when it doesn’t work only more angry and frustrated.

Is it now called the Robbie and Ryan Miller Memorial Bridge? I looked it up on Google maps. That seems to fit the description you are saying.
Awesome video Chris.
The name of the city it's self is ironic. Downingtown? Like feeling down. Wow. No direspect to does of have perished. Much love!
I live here but it was originally called mill town
@@dino4688 Milltown ok. Do you know why they changed the town's name?
You always find such interesting things to cover and your narration is great. That’s part of what sets you apart from the other channels that travel and vlog about different places and attractions.
Edit: Question for any train aficionados, regarding those repeating metal frames over the top of the bridge. We’re they used to support cables for electric powered trains from above, or were they used for signage, lights, or something else similar?
Been looking for a place. T Y for sharing this.
Great Job !
watched your other video on dam that busted & killed 1200 people, that awesome video also. alot of info & history in that one
sad…permanent solution to a temporary problem. on the other hand it’s still a beautiful bridge. i love how things were built back in the day and were built to last. i hope it gets restored.
Life is the temporary problem
@@MustObeyTheRules Sadly I know what you mean.
@@MustObeyTheRules You can visit the bridge too if you'd like 😁
Life is sometimes not a temporary problem.
It would cost millions to restore it. There's no purpose in restoring it. Better to build a suicide prevention center.
I use this road often to go from Quarry rd to West Chester often and drove by this signs recently but didn't know about that and didn't put two and two together,I always admire the engeneering of this construction but it's really sad specially for family and friends thanks for sharing
who ever is reading this remember that I LOVE you and you are important
Thanks Chris, people need to be made more aware that there is help out there and people that care.
R.I.P to all of those people who felt that bridge was their only option.
Thank you for sharing, much love. xx ❤
The people who felt that bridge was their only option cannot read your message because they are dead 😁
Damn im not even afraid of heights and was a little nervous for you when you showed how far down it was through that hole in the bridge. Stay safe.
Thank you for the video very interesting
Awe God Bless Them all. so sad YES Reach out for HELP even if it's to a stranger. They can totally turn that into a bike walk path and put wire netting cameras around it they actually did that below my house here the tweetsie trail is what it is now called but it was 15 miles of train track for many many years
Love to see the courage of people onto others who are fighting their battles ❤️
