"Get Acquainted with Yourself" Matt Munisteri Live from Common Ground

Matt Munisteri "This is a big request number - I actually recorded it on my first CD, ten years ago, but that was before the additional lyrics...The only version of this tune I've ever heard was on a record of Willie "The Lion" Smith's, and the Cahn lyric (the first set of lyrics) amazed me. It struck me as a post-modern prototype, and it seemed that it needed a bunch of other lyrics addressing our uniquely post-modern living dilemmas. I started with a few ideas and promptly found myself stuck, and so I explained the situation to the best lyricist I know, Rachelle Garniez (the best lyricist working, in my book). Within an hour or so my inbox was flooded with lyrics. So we promptly caught a plane to Puerto Rico, where we found time to hammer out the resulting instruction manual for present day coping. Incidentally, where I saw the original lyric as offering needling, but well intentioned, advice, Rachelle saw its exhortation to "get acquainted" as a clear "go f*#k yourself". I'm sure she's right."

Matt Ray makes good on every promise, and Danton Boller has a fine "how do you do?" You know, if only for the sake of the economic recovery of this great country of ours, I am truly grateful that most trios don't sound like this one: It would break my heart to see the welfare lines further swell with the ranks of unemployed drummers, which would be the inevitable result if all trios swung as hard as these cats do. Ha!!!
