Hey! - This video was referenced in Red Hook's recent interview with Destructoid! According to Chris and Tyler, "The community, as a whole, is very very smart, and very energetic and creative and so it’s just really fun to see what they do." They felt the video "was amazing!...well produced, and he got some stuff right…and he got some stuff totally wrong."
Anxious to see exactly what we did get right and totally wrong here moving forward!

If the Kamera is locked and limited angles on the characters are allowed a 2D-Look is very much doable with 3D characters, while also having the advantage that animating a 3D model is much easier and results in much more varied and fluid movement. Could be that they just wanted to cut costs, making a 3D model and doing slight changes to the puppet and camera positions to settle on a definitive piece costs less than redrawing every single piece by hand multiple times, then the 2D artist can eventually draw over it so you can still end up with just drawn art in the final game.

Hmm... How about this? You always start with 10 torch for early, 20 for normal, 30 legen dungeon. Then you can go through halls while finding some thing you can melt to either get item or open shortcut or avoid a single encounter (with scout ability that can tell you what comp you are facing). So you either have choice to safely go through dungeon warmly or burn torches to get treasures or secret path in exchange for facing crit monsters that thrive in coldness. Also, we could a mechanic where a really strong elite monster roam a map and ambush the party that are walking around too slow due to low torch coldness, with option to outrun him on sight with high torch.

I wouldn’t doubt we’d see a cosmetic change with leveling up and see different things on characters that have seen or experienced different problems in the dungeons. Finally I feel like food will be a major key now, since we’re set in a desolate location, food hunting or farming will be a big thing, now we’ll have to be careful with just spamming food to regen our heroes, it could be a difference between life and death of the party.

    Right! Incoming wall of text:
On the subject of shoggoths: I always figured that was a shoggoth in the intro cinematic of DD1. It's a gigantic, amorphous blob-like thing with maddeningly twisted facial features that confronts an expedition delving into ancient architecture.
On their release strategy: you had me panicing when you said they'd be going the "EA way", my dude! Then I realized you meant early access XD
On the subject of the Mountain: thinking back on the first game, I'm not surprised the devs are upping the ante with a distinctly Everest-like mountain. In the first game, the entrance to the Darkest Dungeon itself is located at the highest peak on the map, which is only accessible after you've cleared enough missions in the other horrendous locales. The whole thing is a metaphorical climb up a mountain, as well as a literal climb, too- although whether or not a "stoic perch above the moor" counts as a mountain is up for debate. The symbolism is still there, regardless.
And as this is the sequel, it makes sense that there'll be a bigger mountain- both metaphorically and literally. Also, I'm wondering if the mountain itself is called "The End" in-universe- that phrase is mentioned in the trailer in a way that makes it sound rather prominent. Many, many people have died trying to surmount Everest in real life- it'd make sense if the Darkest Dungeon world's Everest analogue was even more deadly, if not outright claiming the lives every single explorer that's ever tried to climb it.
On the subject of locations outside the Hamlet Estate: I've got a few theories on how it'll work, with all but one building on your whole caravan/base camp setup you mentioned.
My first functional theory was that it was going to be set up similarly to the first game- the mountain as the central region where you'd send off the expeditions to. But of course, a colossal snowy mountain range won't have the same variety of environments like the first game did- it's really difficult to make snowy mountains diverse and interesting. So I thought that maybe rather than places in and around the mountain, it'll be locations in the regions around the mountain. In real life, Everest is bordered by a few different countries, so I figured you'd be travelling in a circuit through the countries around the mountain, venturing into different places there to do battle with supernatural threats. Through that, you'd earn supplies, good will, and other resources to help build up for a final expedition to take care of whatever ultimate threat lies in the mountain.
But then I thought that was both too limiting and ill-fitting. I mean, does it make sense that you'd recruit your Hellion, Leper, and Highwayman from Bangladesh? Your Plague Doctor, Man-at-arms, or Grave Robbers from Bhutan? Yes yes, I know that the setting is supposed to be ambiguously old-timey, so England would have a presence in most of those regions- but that's a bit of a stretch. No, I figured that something else would fit the setup better: the historical Silk Road. It'd fit in with the ambiguous time of the setting, allows for recruitment of classes new and old (and modded), and provides a new framework for the journey. Rather than a caravan circuit through the few countries that border the mountain, your goal is to make your way from the Hamlet, through the various land and sea routes of the Silk Road (or whatever it will be named within the game's world), eventually to your ultimate goal of an expedition up the mountain. But, seeing as this is Darkest Dungeon we're talking about, it won't be a simple point A to point B journey. You'd face setbacks, obstacles, events, monsters- all manner of hiccups on your way through various countries and their various laws. I can't even imagine what kinds of regions will be featured, or even what kinds of monsters they'd used. i wouldn't be surprised if Red Hook leaned even more on procedurally-generated environments- and depending on how that'd be executed, it could make the environments more generic than in DD1, but it'd make sense if you're going to be fighting horrors all over the old world.
My final theory on how the setting layout will be is rather similar to the first. When seeing the trailer and the potential prominence of a big snowy mountain in the game, I of course wondered how the hell that was going to work in a DD game. Then I realized oh, it's probably something deep in the mountain- like how the Darkest Dungeon was deep underground. And that got me wondering if for this game they might do a Journey to the Centre of the Earth sorta thing. To oversimplify the novel, a team of explorers go into a snowy volcano, find a vast prehistoric biome with dinosaurs, a vast subterranean ocean, and other spectacles both awe-inspiring and terrifying; then make it out another volcano somewhere else on the planet. I can see Red Hook taking that idea and going full-on horror with it. You have a base camp which you build up and improve with currency and resources, not dissimilar from restoring the Hamlet. From there, you make expeditions out to various parts of the mountain: frozen ruins on the mountain not unlike in the images in the video here; the humid, hazardous jungles deep under the mountain where you fight dinosaurs twisted and mutated similarly to the Shrieker or that one Shambler in the Darkest Dungeon; a colossal underground lake/sea/ocean with architecture and enemies not unlike those that were in the Cove; all the while facing off against cannibalistic cavemen who've come to worship the fetal cosmic horror within our planet, functioning similarly to the scores of cultists you faced in all locales in the first game. I realize that's pulling from Jules Verne, not Lovecraft, but Jules Verne did include elements of horror into his sci-fi.
Or maybe that might be the end game- like how the Darkest Dungeon was split into 4 parts. I have no idea what Red Hook's going to do- but I know for sure that it's going to be brutal, stress-inducing fun.
On the subject of improved, potentially 3D graphics: one of the chief reasons I love DD so much is that it's not very demanding, specs-wise. I've got a laptop that's a couple years old that's more for generic use- it's definitely NOT made for gaming. DD and all my mods run just fine on it. I know this is kinda shitty to say, but I hope DD2 isn't too much of a step up from DD1. I want to be able to play it and all the amazing mods.
All that being said, bigger parties with row-based combat would be very cool- more abilities being thrown around, more tactical flexibility.
On the subject of what I'd want to see in the sequel: Just like you said E, I'm hoping improved weapons and gear changes the character models to make them look more badass. I'd also love to see all the classes come back, along with some new ones- particularly new healers and stress-healers for added variety and flexibility. I'd also like to see new bosses and the ability to re-fight them. I'd also like to see more roaming mini-bosses- the Collector and Thing from the Stars get rather boring after a while, the Fanatic becomes practically irrelevant after finishing the Courtyard, and you don't get to fight the Shrieker nearly enough. As well, it'd be cool to see some, if not all, the bosses from DD1 make a revamped return for the new combat system. Along with all these new big bad things to kill, it'd be nice to have incentives to repeatedly fight them, specifically more trinkets and quirks to get, e.g. you manage to kill the Prophet, your Man-at-arms now has the Gift of Prophecy quirk, making it so that when he's in your party, he'll give Evasion buffs to members about to be targeted by enemies.
Last, but very much not least, I'd like to see Red Hook continue to support, or at the very least be cool with, all the modding. DD1's lifespan, like Skyrim's and Fallout's, has been dramatically prolonged thanks to the avid community that's sprung up around it.

The thing I'd like to see the most in a DD sequel is a shift more towards actual roguelike gameplay. I felt that nothing in Darkest Dungeon had actual consequences for my game: Afflictions weren't permanent, deseases and quirks could be easily removed and the death of a character was just a minor setback, as I could always retrain a new one (at least in the unmodded game).
For a potential sequel, I would love to see them get rid of the hamlet micro management and focus more on the actual adventuring part. Maybe extend the reward system by adding actual equipment drops in addition to the trinkets. I like the "pros vs. cons" design of trinkets. Definitely keep that. But they could make armor and weapon upgrades actual loot instead of upgrades.
I would also love for them to implement some of the more popular modded classes, like the Lamia.
One cool extra feature I'd like was improved UI and controls so that the game is actually playable on a controller. I'd love to play this on my couch, but the controller control scheme is horrible.

Suggestion: since we are traveling from the hamlet. It would be fun to have 6 or more in the party, but you can only get in a mission with 4. And the others are gonna to set up camp. Therefore you can have a chain of missions, but you are limiting to only chose from the starring 6 characters.
I think this would be quite cool and it would add additional complexity and difficulty.

One thing I was pondering was hiding quirks from player - it probably would help players to attach more to characters since you have to pay attention to what they excel at - and which are kleptomaniacs. As well as make more skins for different heroes, so you can get more variation.
Especially if it is more about journey (/caravan)... I can only guess about if they'll mix up gameloop and how much.

It is definitely an interesting idea. The Banner Saga has a caravan-type thing going, so maybe it will be similar to that. Aesthetic changes to characters as they gained new weapons and armour was something I wanted in DD, so to see it in DD2 will be cool. Maybe quirks could also have visual effects, and that could act as a way of seeing what quirks a character has.

I'm so hyped about this new DD game, and thinking a little bit I have some ideas
For example, the game can be formed in 4 stages or scenes you can play; the main mountain, two other mountains lower tan the main one and a stage of a village. By this you can start in the Village stage, where like in the first game you can do various things like buying equipment for the heroes and that, decreasing the stress in then and all of that. In the first 2-3 hours you will do some missions for the people of the village, by doing this you gain their confidence and more and more you start to hear about the dangers of the mountain, where the "local man ruins everything" of this game have go to that place and did something so the monsters in the mountain sometimes attack the village.
. The random events obviously will happen, but it will have a calendar that have important dates where a event will happen 100%, a ritual in the village that make that the monsters don't attack in a while so you can be safe of going on adventure and expeditions to the mountain without the risk of coming back and find how some villagers die and every service is closed for days.
In the village you can do some management of resources, more that heirlooms to upgrade services, you can make barricades to prevent attacks in the village, see when a storm is coming and making the city more advanced and all of that.
Now the heroes that don't come to an expeditions can be useful in the village, ones you finish a expedition to anywhere there can be a chance where randoms events will happen while the heroes of the expeditions where out, a little bit of role play where for example the owner of the taverns need helps by moving barrels of bears, so you can do that with the heroes that are presents in the village it have to get a minimum of combined stats, in this case can be attack, if the heroes you select have the actual amount required of that stats combined you can do that shore, gain a little bit of extra gold but maybe a heroe may have drink the liquor or bear in the storage, so he is drunk af and can't do shit till the other day.
Weather mechanic, some days is sunny and without a little of air, and other days you freeze to the core and every heroes have a debuff that the attack lowers for example. You can know when or what is going to be the weather, by upgrading a technology so you can have a weather machine, or a hero like a religious character like that can talk with some spirits or god's and depending of how good the character is, it can say with no doubt that today is going to be a nice day, know you can say "why I would like to upgrade that weather machine if a have this character that is so powerful and never fails?" where by having those to options one complement the other, having a full coverage of the weather, maybe you see that the machine says nothing bad is going to happen in the next hours but when you are in the expeditions the hero tells you that is you do certain thing will make the gods be angry and will fuck you up with a storm, and it will say how soon that would happen.
In the mountains you can go free roaming, not like you select like 4 or 5 scenarios, you go to the mountains in search of places you can get in and explore a dungeon, a lost camp, bodies and thinks like that down the snow and this elements will be randomly placed in over the mountains (with this I mean is random placed on every new game and with random loot once you finish it)
The mountains have different high levels, lest say that you have a level 5 Leper in the village that you need to get it on the main mountain in the 6 high level, if you take it there like immediately this hero will have a negative buff where it stats will decrease significantly, so this to not happen it maybe will have like consume objects where this negative buff happen and it will be like nothing, but if you don't you will have every 2 high level make a camp, stop and make the character to be acclimate to the high and the cold, then you can continue climbing. Maybe by this you can have differents groups of character in the mountain going in a path, some in a dungeons, others going for loot in abandoned camps and survive from starving and cold (by this I think it will be cool if you can make the characters to have coats for the cold and maybe gave the characters different armour and weapons to change their main mechanic and have a more complex or deep way to make the team and strategy)

Things I hope for: an increased roster for both characters and monsters ... DD1 was 4 vs 4, I want DD2 to be 5 vs 7 ... yes, give the monsters the numbers advantage.
One more environmental effect to worry about other than just darkness/light per stage ... adverse conditions such as cold, stench or undergrowth should be interesting.
For combats, I hope to see one of the seven squares occupied by obstacles ... perhaps as simple as destructible boulders or tables giving cover to the enemy behind them.
Lastly, add more optional sidequests and unusual goals within each adventure location, so as to avoid any chance of monotony ... shamblers & collectors need more friends.

Also, my idea for a class I call the Oracle would be pretty cool I feel. She's an attractive and mysterious gypsy-ish looking woman with a crystal ball and a stiletto blade. Her thematic and her move-set are built around clarevoyance (to buff and de-stress your party), psychedelic herbs (heals & buffs/damage & debuffs), and what some rumor to be parlor tricks and mockery of the simple-minded (although others believe it to be delving too deep into the mystical nature of the abyss).
Her offensive abilities include stiletto stab (an armor piercing attack with substantial bleed damage), a drug bomb (uses a sprinkling of gun powder to accelerate vapors into the whole enemy party, causing each of them small blight damage and a debuff to speed/acc/dodge), and lightning shock (huge damage range with high crit chance, resulting in underwhelming fizzles, explosive burst damage, and everywhere in between).

would love to see different locals in DD2 like maybe exploring the sewers of London fighting cultists, to fighting through an ancient lost city fighting ancient eldritch horror. The idea of travelling over the world and just trying to survive the journey is pretty appealing. It would be cool to see maybe the party members develop bonds while in camp, maybe if you send 2 people on the same missions a lot they could develop a bond and when one of them dies it causes the surviving member to suffer a large hit of stress. In addition, they could receive buffs or debuffs when they are together or apart.

My speculation that would kind of create this adventure aspect of the game, would be to have different base camps, and in order to move characters from one base camp to another, they would have to do a dungeon, and you could have different routes and different base camps that twist and combine together. So instead of managing the Hamlet you would have to move supplies and party members between camps, possibly getting upgrades later that automate things more allowing you to traverse further up the mountain.

I think the biggest thing I could see change while still retaining the gameplay is making levels and areas and story more linear. Instead of being able to go to any dungeon area at any time, there might be more story progression in which you have to progress through an area mostly or completely before you can get to the next area and part of the story.

Okay so I just read mountains of madness and even though I`m late to this party just hear me out. They say your gonna get a glimpse of the spreading stain of the darkest dungeon and in mountains of madness a unnamable evil lurks in the city past the mountains. So what if you travel from the hamlet with 1 clue and try to find the reason for the evil still remaining. Saving some towns you learn of the evil lurking in the snowy mountains of madness. So you fight your way there and try to find and kill/banish whatever is still corrupting people world wide.
With this the game will be very different but also not. Dungeon runs trying to clear a path to the boss is replaced by a system where you try to kill people who are destroying the current town ending with a boss battle or a grueling massacre in the streets. The game could even play more like x-com with this by having a larger fight/explore area. You would have to manage a caravan group so that you can travel to find the evil. Could be fun and even more punishing and rewarding.

Perhaps we will have multiple expeditions with certain heroes only available in certain expeditions, and, instead of upgrading the hamlet, you have to upgrade each individual little expedition. One in the mountains for sure, but perhaps we’ll still see one in the sprawling warrens and ruins of the old estate, maybe we’ll also see one from wherever the shield breaker hails.

I feel like that the backgrounds, areas, foregrounds, really anything that ha to do with the landscape, will be three-dimensional, whilst keeping the characters, enemies and interactilbes two-dimensional, thus giving a sort of pop-up book effect, which would definitely make vast snowy landscapes seem even larger and more barren, caves and more depth and feel, and structures and (hopefully) bosses have that much more grotesque detail. This is just what I expect what with the 3D landscape designer.

They could do things like unifying how information is displayed. Like the resistances, for instance, are not actually a percentage. Otherwise, 100% resistance would be total immunity. But it doesn't, which means it's actually just a compared number.

I'd love it if in the sequel they make it so there is no modding limit that eventually destroys your game. Yet gameplay wise I'd love to see classes have more flexible builds (Melee Vestal anyone?), for there to be no direct counters to your heroes ("Whelp they are all immune to bleeding. Guess your useless Lepper"), and for certain roles to be more numerous so you feel less beholden to, say, a Man-At-Arms if you want a good defensive frontliner or Vestal/Occultist if you want a dedicated healer (Yeah I know there was SOME wiggle room, but you know what I mean).

Darkest Dungeon is one of the very few games where I actually like their mods as a whole. Most mods are created with the intention of being the most special snowflake of them all and as such things like balance or thematic consistency mean absolutely nothing... Certainly there are broken classes in Darkest Dungeon and some that just a hodgepodge of ideas... but there are so many things that might as well be official expansion content!

never fails to amaze me how a community can take a 30 second teaser trailer and turn it into a 20 minute video.

Literally didn't know about the "Chance to Hit" and "Chance to Crit" on the bottom right, when choosing a target for MONTHS. Now I'm better for it.
