This system deserves so many awards for how seamlessly it flows between urban and natural environments. Not only is it NOT disruptive to the urban environment, it flies over a creek leaving only the TINIEST footprint.
Compared to other supended railways (e.g. Chiba) or beem viaducts of a conventional metro system (e.g Berlin or New York) the supporting structure of the Schwebebahn is really sleek, because its steel framework is much more filigree. It is really a masterpiece of engineering. Most people won't believe it was constructed 1898 and opened in 1901. BTW the city council of Wuppertal decided against an elevated metro because of the negative optical impact to the city. Instead. they gave a completely new and untested transport system a chance. A wise decision. The Schwebebahn was way more expensive to build but it was worth it. Yes, I am a fan of it ;-)
It's not well known, but Eugen Langen (the inventor of the Schwebebahn) proposed this system to the city of Berlin. Here is a photo of a a test-track: www.bz-berlin.de/data/uploads/2017/04/gondel_1493217695-768x432.jpg However, Berlin built a normal elevated railway system which evolved into the current subway.
@@matsv201 No doubt about that. H-Bahn Dortmund or Düsseldorf Sky-Train are very good examples for even sleeker designs. However, if you watch a video of the shonan monorail for example, you will agree that the supporting structures look *really* massive and obstrusive. Considerung the age of the Schwebebahn, it is astounding that its sleek design is unmatched even by most of the systems which are way more modern.
At 9:48 , the train leaves the "Varresbeck" station and crosses the Bayer Chemie factory premises. At the next stop, "Westende", there used to be a coal-fired power plant. From there, thick pipes lead to the district heating supply along the banks of the Wupper.
I also think of a possible replacement for the wheel-on-rails drive system (not the carriages themselves, instead keeping them). This could be replaced by a overhead maglev rail carrier system, to get it to a point where it moves almost noiseless along its track. No wear anymore, no noises. just floats along its guideways. Shortstator. means we would have a metal rail on the guideway, carried (lifting some cm up so it sits on a hovering field around the stator rail) by magnets mounted on the vehicle glider which can be inductively supplied with power (or by another siderail on the carrier rail by pickups, which are mounted movable, attaching safely to the contact rail while it hovers along)
This railway is now available in OMSI 2 in the DLC Wuppertal if you want to drive suspended railway. You will have to read the manual as it’s very hard to get it on the tracks for a beginner.
I swear, I wish I knew conversational German. I'd move there in a heartbeat. I love the US, but our infrastructure is dismal, compared to my German cousins.
It really depends where you are in Germany, Wuppertaler is kind of a extreme and with what is really a number of small towns linked together with very early commuter traffic. There really been some sort of Tram mania in Europe the last decades, building systems that is not really that great
@@matsv201 Trams actually aren't always that bad and they often complement metro/subway systems. It really depends on the city. Some German cities which had fairly large tram systems such as Kiel (tram system closed in 1985), Bremerhaven (tram system closed in 1982), and Aachen are considering a reintroduction since busses can't handle certain amounts of traffic. Well, i was born in this city and lived for years in a house direct next to this monorail. From my window i could see on top of the construction. It was a nice view. Yes, the monorail was gone and it didnt felt right so i coulndt sleep as easy as when i was living next to it.
Built in 1901. Obviously it has newer wagons now, but the overhead rail line was built back in 1901. Awesome!
