    My very first karate instructor was someone who got into a lot of fights (yes he was bad at self defense and he's used literally every single one the things you said in this video) he did lose a bunch. He was functionally crippled due to all the trauma he had from the times he's been shot, stabbed, bludgeoned, and so on. He could barely walk. Still was good at karate, but not nearly as good as he could've been if he had learned to walk away. If your instructor isn't near crippled after being in dozens of "real life and death fights" he's a liar and probably bad at self defense. If he is crippled from all those fights, he might be telling the truth and is also bad at self defense

    I used to work as a bouncer (6 years). I also trained Japanese jujutsu… I never had to fight. I used de-escalation and talked to people. I was under no illusions that I could fight with a big scary looking Russian dude that I had to get out of there. Instead of saying: ‘get out of here’ in an aggressive tone, I approached the guy and apologized saying something like: ‘I am sorry but I have to ask you to leave or we might lose our liquor license. There is some truth to this, but not in the way most people phrase it. Big muscles won't make you slower or unathletic.
      But big muscles will drain your cardio. There are alot sprinters with big muscles, not alot of marathoners though.
      Also if you're doing something like MMA where weight classes are important, having some muscle is good, having "extra" muscle will put you in a higher weight class and at a certain point the extra strength is not a good tradeoff vs. less reach. Depends on your style though. A grappler probably can see this as a good tradeoff, a striker not so much.

    Fun fact: we do have people who were competent at using swords to stab people and gave advice on fighting multiple opponents (Musashi, Dobringer, Silver and many others). The advice they give is one of the following: 1) run away if even slightly possible, 2) use footworks to fight only one at a time, 3) run away so that the quicker guys catch up to you first, then fight them one at a time, 4) bend over, grab your ankles and kiss your ass goodbye (usually phrased as 'pray to God' or some such). Just about every other bit of advice either has you have a better weapon or is only meant to maybe discourage people from engaging, since no one wants to be the first one stabbed.
    Just about the only exception is Musashi, who says you should use two swords (well, katana and wakizahi) and feel entirely free to chuck one of them at someone's face.
    tl;dr If a guy who won over a hundred sword duels tells you to run, you probably should take his advice.

      There's a former convict in Brazil called Pedrinho Matador (something like "Pete the Killer") who's been in a lot of knife fights in prisons and has killed over 70 people, according to the records. He has his own tips about fighting multiple oponents: basically, guys that atack in group are usually cowards. If you are able to reach one and be EXTREMELY agressive, you might be lucky enought that the others will run away. But even he say that if you can run away, you should.

In most cases the individual was drunk, out of shape, unprepared, or all of those + more I haven't thought about. And I have still been hurt pretty badly over a long career. Instead of admitting flaws and downsides of a martial art, a lot of people change the subject by claiming something like "it's not about a martial art, it's all about the person" and etc. Especially if it's about such questionable martial arts (in terms of being effective and having a solid proofs of their effectiveness) like aikido, wing chun, kung fu, tai chi and etc.

Now it might not be a bad visualization technique to remove unnecessary tension from the body, but a lot of them legitimately believe that muscles are only meant to work as brakes and power comes from the tendons 😂

His students adopted those habits too and would fight each other all the time, and fight other people all the time, and so to some that's a cool thing for your teacher to do I guess until he turns that around on you. The moment my teacher got on that guy's bad side he immediately came at him with that same intent. My teacher eventually started learning a different style under a teacher who was good at the "verbal martial arts" and taught his students to first de-escalate a situation, and my teacher is a very chill guy who always stresses the same principles to me. In the STREET however - if I meet a boxer, I won't fight him with 'familiar' techniques".

    Great video! The "better be judged by 12" phrase is originaly a military/police saying that was hijaked by bad martial artist. Originaly it's supposed to encourage action over inaction, because in combat you have little time to make decisions. It's supposed to say, better to act and not be passive, even if you didn't choose the best possible action, because being passive can cost the lives of you and your friends. I used to hear variations of that all the time when I served. But bad martial artist like using military stuff for civilians, like it gives more credibility or something, even though it's not meant for civillian situations. They use it the way you said and create this false dichotomy of life and death situation where it's not the case at all.

With unarmed arts , combat sports are where it's at but with weaponized combat sports sadly, we still haven't had our version of the UFC to prove if an Olympic saber fencer, kendoko, HEMA or FMA practitioner would have an advantage on the "streets" or as was said sometimes in old fencing books "on the ground," meaning the dueling ground. I'd also like to say that using street fight records to further sell whatever art one is trying to sell has some ehtical flaws, I think real experience is learned from them and although perhaps socially undesirable, they do nevertheless provide learning. A long time ago in many places, military officers could be punished for dueling but at the same time would be expelled if it was found out they had refused to accept a duel.

    Actual lawyer here speaking in defence of the “judged by 12” argument:
    Whilst *I agree that it’s possible to take the argument too far,* at the same time, I see a hell of a lot of scaremongering about the law on self defence, mainly from the RBSD crowd who want to give their styles a USP. They make it sound like you are Nicholas Cage from Con Air and you will go to prison for breathing on someone if you don’t listen to their expert guidance.
    Some common BS myths they peddle include:
    * You need to “fear” violence in order for it to count as self defence.
    * Pre-emptive strikes are not self-defence.
    * You have a duty to retreat.
    * Martial artists are held to a higher standard.
    Against this backdrop, saying “I’d rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6” is a reasonable retort. The key point is that you are being *judged* by 12, not that you will automatically get sent to prison. An undue level of concern about being prosecuted can put your safety at risk because you fail to neutralise the threat.

    • @ArmchairViolence
      @ArmchairViolence  Місяць тому +1

      This is mostly true, but I do have a couple of nitpicks:
      1. A lot of places DO have duty to retreat laws depending on where you are. It's more important to know the laws of your state, because a lot of them do require you to retreat when in a public place.
      2. If your case has been brought to trial, there is an overwhelming chance that you are being convicted. Your best chance, by far, is to avoid being charged. Quite frankly, I'd much rather be shot than be charged with homicide, as I'm much more likely to recover from a bullet wound than I am to beat felony charges.

    • @MetalCooking666
      @MetalCooking666 Місяць тому +1

      @@ArmchairViolence thanks for the response.
      The duty to retreat thing may vary based on the jurisdiction (I practice in England and Wales). If there is such a duty in your state then ok. But it’s a myth that seems to get peddled everywhere including England and Wales.
      (EDIT: I just did some highly advanced Wikipedia research and it looks like only a small minority of US states have a duty to retreat).
      Tbh I’m not sure how a duty to retreat would even work considering merely threatening someone counts as assault, so the implication is that you have to literally let other people commit crimes against you by backing down to their threats.
      As for the overwhelming chance of being convicted, this obviously assumes your case actually makes it to trial, which it may not. Then again, if it doesn’t make it to trial, then you’re not being “judged by 12”, you’re merely *risking* being judged by 12, but I suppose people who use that phrase aren’t thinking that far ahead.

    • @ArmchairViolence
      @ArmchairViolence  Місяць тому +1

      @@MetalCooking666 Yes, but the best way to make sure your case never makes it to trial is to ensure that you don't break any laws! And with laws varying by state and locality, and prosecutors having a great deal of leeway in who to charge, we do often have to be careful. It doesn't mean we can't defend ourselves, but it does mean there are cases where 3 punches would be self-defense, but the 4th punch is a felony.
      More importantly, the "judged by 12 than carried by 6" saying is, at least in the US, used in the context of shooting someone to death if there is even the potential that they might be a threat. I don't know if you heard about the recent cases of someone being killed for pulling into someone's driveway. Or being shot for knocking on a door. The phrase is stereotypically used by the "shoot first, ask questions later" crowd which is why I rail against it.

    • @MetalCooking666
      @MetalCooking666 Місяць тому +1

      @@ArmchairViolence yeah to be clear I agree it can be taken too far. There is such a thing as lower-level self defence (in fact I think a lot of traditional techniques like standing submissions that “don’t work” in sparring have some utility there).
      With the 3 punch vs 4 punch thing, I don’t think it usually comes down to that but it’s more of a question of context. If the person was clearly no longer a threat to you after punch 3 then punch 4 would be over the line as at this point you have strayed from doing what you had to do to protect yourself into punishing them. If the fight was still very much in full swing then that’s doubtful.
      A famous controversial case in England is that of a farmer called Tony Martin who shot a burglar. The media (especially the tabloids) jazzed it up as this example of self-defence law gone mad, but the reason it didn’t count as self-defence (which the media omitted) was that the burglar was running away.
      Maybe I’m being overly charitable, but I tend to assume people who use the “judged by 12” argument in a the context of a discussion about martial arts are talking about (1) genuine self-defence (if it’s just someone pulling into your driveway then I don’t see where the “carried by 6” part comes into it) and (2) unarmed combat (if you’ve got a gun then it’s not really relevant to a martial arts discussion).

      @@ArmchairViolence Everyone is ignoring a likely potential scenario in which you don't have enough:
      - information about attackers, weapons etc. to know whether you are in real danger
      - time to process aforementioned information if you have it and react to it.
      P.S. Why would you rather risk dying or getting serious permanent injuries from getting shot than risk being incarcerated for homicide?

    My kajukenbo instructor said basically what you did. He said the first thing to do is try not to have to fight in the first place.
    What he told me was that the number of times he’d been attacked or confronted was five (I think) and three (or maybe four?) out of those five were solved with no philysicak contact whatsoever.

    Boy do I hope to be in part three, here goes:
    There is one exception in history for there being techniques specifically for multiple opponents that do not work against singular opponents. This is armed martial arts in an actual martial situation when fighting a fight of attrition when being outnumbered BUT being equipped with larger weapons. By this I mean a situation where a few people are fending off a bigger force, usually with spears or zweihanders. Note, that this doesn't necessarily mean even attacking the opponent, but fending off as in keeping them away by occupying space. These "techniques" are more tactics than singular techniques - most often just swinging in large arcs to take as much space as possible so the enemy would not dare to close in. Why this works is because of two things: weapons and fear. Absolutely no-one wants to charge someone swinging a halberd, a cutting spear or a zweihander, because getting even a "minor" hit means most likely death or a loss of limb. And why this counts as an exception to the claim no technique works better against multiple people than one, is that swinging in large arcs is EXACTLY what you never do against one opponent - you keep the point of your weapon towards them and control their weapon.
    Also, HEMA is best for self defense because you never get into fights. Your hobby is so unusual that you only hang out with other weirdos at home because you have no money to go out.
    #historical fencing "for the alleys" ⚔️

    I used to love fighting when I was young. Sports, backyard matches, street brawls whatever. I don't remember when I started to realize how dangerous but over time I've chilled out a lot. Haven't had to fight since I decided I was done, but my policy these days is if I gotta whup some ass it's going to be a very unfair fight xD I carry a mouth guard and knuckles and I'm not above throwing rocks either 🤣 well and truly outgrown any interest in getting hit in the face anymore

    It always makes me chuckle when people make comments about getting too big and bulky like it will happen by accident. Do you have any idea how much effort it takes for me to look this mediocre? Trust me, if you aren’t on the tren train it’s going to take months/years to make substantial gains.

    I grew up in Pittsburgh watching older kids get into street fights. Some fights were king of the hill ego fights, while some others were turf war fights and some were even vendetta type revenge fights where individuals got ganged up on because they had beaten up someone else fairly and we're a revenge target. There were also free for all's that happened after sporting events.
    The martial distinctions were: boxers, wrestlers, and tuff kids... Some kids may have learned some basic Karate or Kung-fu because that's what was available. It wasn't all that functional but was mysterious and deadly supposedly...lol! To me it always seemed useless unless it could work as fast and hard as punch & tackle tactics did. There was a lot of slamming and ground-n-pound too...

    Good points again! However by way of a counter example I would say that going to the ground is a wonderful move in a one on one fight, as evidenced by the entire history of MMA. Fastest way to win. On the other hand, doing this in a multiple attacker situation will instantly get you kicked in the head or stabbed in the back. So you're limited to only things you can do while standing up and preferably while constantly moving around. Pretty much every martial art I've seen has upper level drills for this situation and they all look pretty much the same. Your goal is no longer to subdue one enemy, your goal is to use them as a human shield and get away. You can beat them up one at a time when they chase you :D But use that stuff in a one on one and you just dance in circles dealing light to moderate damage till they finally connect hard. Except Sumo, they use it all the time there.

      Not only mma, just google it and you'll see plenty of people effectively going to the ground to stop robbers, crazy people, etc. For some reason people think the only self-defense scenario is a fight against hooligans

    It is so stupid for everyone to use the 'street fight' example when there are a bunch of unknowable factors and a very high amount of risk involved like eye gouging, biting, shooting a gun, dropping on hard concrete by accident, randomly getting hit by a car, multiple attackers, knives, baseball bats... Literally anything and everything may happen.

    Fantastic video...u make solid and simple facts to refute the bad martial artists teachings and provide great examples. Something that might help get more views from casuals who seriously need this information for the next video would be to try and include clips of 1 of these bad instructors actually saying/demonstrating the stupid things they say and then also show a clip of their "technique" failing in a real life scenario (of course that's assuming it's possible to find those videos) ...just a thought either, way I really enjoyed it great job
