Bratislava (and a lot of the other cities) has a lot of old world charm. In Bratislava specifically, if you want everything from medieval Gothic architecture upward, to Art Nouveau and Functionalist architecture from the early 20th century, you'll find it there. ;-) Don't miss the smaller museums or more off-the-beaten path landmarks, some are very impressive and help give a better understanding to Bratislava's complex history. Pity some of the old parts of Bratislava were demolished by those stupid commies after the 1950s, but thankfully, most of the old parts of the city survived. In recent years, there's some planned efforts to cover a road that senselessly cut the Old Town in half back in the 1960s with a reinforced roof, hiding it in a tunnel, and adding a park and pedestrian zone on top of the roof, to create a renewed direct connection between the split-apart parts of the Old Town. I hope those plans succeed. Bratislava does look better nowadays then when it was rather neglected in the late 1980s. It's hardly a perfect capital city, but it's been changing for the better since the return of democracy and reviving the city's self-respect via its long and rich historical heritage has been one of the ways Bratislava has been revitalized.

Great Video. Glad the hostel wasn’t so awful after all 😂. I went to Bratislava in 2019 and I literally walked to Kittsee which is a village populated by Slovaks but is in Austria. Considering the history it’s fascinating that you can just walk across.
Nice ! 🙂 You're right about the less fortunate history... Far too often, past regimes in the 20th century put up barbed wire next to the Danube or Morava, to bar people any crossing of the border that had previously been crossed without issues for centuries. We cut down all of the barbed wire in 1989 and beyond, and when I visited Vienna for the first time in 2005 - without even a passport, barely a year and a half after Slovakia joined the EU - I knew we've put that ugly chapter in central European history behind us. Let's never allow barbed wire on borders and closed borders returning. The decades of humiliation in the 20th century were more than enough. Many good people were murdered in the latter half of the 20th century for trying to cross the border through the Morava. Today, those victims have an official memorial near Bratislava, close to the banks of the Morava river. I recommend visiting that memorial to anyone who's interested what it was like when Czechoslovakia's (and with it, Slovakia's) freedom was taken away by totalitarians. A simple memorial, but a powerful experience of visiting it, one that makes you really think that we should foster democracy and freedom instead of taking them for granted.
Yes - 1988 - if you tried to just cross the border, they'd shoot at you. 1990 - you can easily cross the border to Austria anytime, feeling almost bizarre. But once in Austria, suddenly you become a very poor person, if you compared your Slovak earnings to Western prices. 2002 - Slovaks buy houses and are the primary source of growth in the area, formerly at the end of the (free) world. And you can even take Bratislava public transit bus to Austria (Hainburg I think)
@@slowyheavy History is very bizarre. I completely understand about the lag between filming and posting. You do an excellent job editing! But I wonder if you could just add into description box when your videos were filmed approximately. I am always curious what season/time of year it is. TY for sharing your adventures with us!
Sviečková sauce is made of vegetables - usually carrots, parsley root, kohlrabi, celery and some seasonings. The vegetables are cooked, then mixed together with the water they were cooked in and cream is added. Quite simple actually. Just takes a lot of time to cook the beef. It's nice to see and English video about my city 🙂
I enjoy the food segments. I'm not an adventurous eater but those dishes looked totally yummy. Julia's face after downing that shot was so funny. Was it Borovička?
The latest population of the city is already 480,000 people. Unofficially, on a weekday up to 650,000. And it's a shame that you didn't visit the UFO tower, the new Downtown with skyscrapers, shopping centers, museums, the National Theater, Devín Castle, St. Martin's Cathedral and the Blue Church, Big monument to Fallen soldiers from World War 2 Slavín, the Danube river cruise...
sauce is: carot, parsley (root),celery, onion + hevy cream + some spices pepper bay leaves jam - cremberies kompot the original should be TENDERLION (translation SVIECKOVA) ..... but the cheaper version is long cooked beef meat eyeround You should try TATRA TEE or Borovicka.
Really surprising ! I would never say you ever visit our country. If I met you here in Slovakia, I would probably not believed that it is you! I really like the way you described our popular Slovak drink KOFOLA - something between Russian " kvas " and coca cola .-.-)) Yes it can be . For your information - comparing COKE and KOFOLA - kofola contains less sugar than coke, but more coffein than coke. Enjoy your stay in our country.

Thanks for visiting my city! It's indeed quite nice and it went through a major positive change within past 20-25 years. I remember coming here in 1999, when it was still a gloomy grey post-socialist city.
not the best choice with the hostel, that one looks more like a budget accomodation for construction workers as it's within the industrial zone, I would prefer something within walking distance to the centre rather. But I am happy you enjoyed the centre and did your research about the local things.
Just before I am going to watch: how the heck to you get to Slovakia without talking about Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Serbia? Hmm. You've done videos on them before? Back of my mind that's it. It's a long trip by car; did you took a plane! Very pretty country Slovakia though I don't know it well. Will now watch and see what you enjoyed!
Now compare Bratislava in this video with one of Charlie Vietch's Manchester videos - conclusion: most of Eastern Europe already enjoys a higher standard of living than the UK
Thanks for this nice video of my city. Just one comment regarding the food. Sviečková is Czech food. The dumplings - Bryndzové halušky is slovak national food. Bryndza = sheep cheese. Slovak bryndza is also registered in the EU's Register of protected designations of origin and protected geographical indications.

I completely understand about the lag between filming and posting. You do an excellent job editing! But I wonder if you could just add into description box when your videos were filmed approximately. I am always curious what season/time of year it is. TY for sharing your adventures with us!
Absolutely, we will try 🥰 this was June ❤️
The final stage is when you have to turn down the radio to see better at night.
You guys are dressed alike ❤ stahhhhhp it. Too cute. Your videos are the best travel vids on UA-cam.
Thank you so much! Really really appreciate it 🥰❤️
Sviečková sauce is made of vegetables - usually carrots, parsley root, kohlrabi, celery and some seasonings. The vegetables are cooked, then mixed together with the water they were cooked in and cream is added. Quite simple actually. Just takes a lot of time to cook the beef.
It's nice to see and English video about my city 🙂
Really glad you enjoyed it 🥰❤️
16:17 - fried onion with carrots, parsley, added cream and mixed :)
14:09 awesome reaction!
Amazing job👏👏 new follower
Thank you so much! Welcome to the channel ❤️🙏🏼
@@MattandJulia Am a creator as well @its clinton and am learning from your videos🙏
I enjoy the food segments. I'm not an adventurous eater but those dishes looked totally yummy. Julia's face after downing that shot was so funny. Was it Borovička?
Borovička is Gin. Oder Wacholderbrantwein. Slovak national alcohol.
So glad you enjoyed it 🥰 Yes it was. So strong! 🥃
Big hug 🤗 ❤
🙏🏼❤️❤️❤️
The latest population of the city is already 480,000 people. Unofficially, on a weekday up to 650,000. And it's a shame that you didn't visit the UFO tower, the new Downtown with skyscrapers, shopping centers, museums, the National Theater, Devín Castle, St. Martin's Cathedral and the Blue Church, Big monument to Fallen soldiers from World War 2 Slavín, the Danube river cruise...
Our country!!!
As always/my favorite. I hope our worlds meet, someday. Safe travels❤
Perhaps we can meet on a tour at some point 🥰❤️
Enjoy Bratislava. It’s good you came in summer, in winter it can get very depressing
loved my time in Bratislava! And definitely had some great Vietnamese food while there 😆
sauce is: carot, parsley (root),celery, onion + hevy cream + some spices pepper bay leaves
jam - cremberies kompot
the original should be TENDERLION (translation SVIECKOVA) ..... but the cheaper version is long cooked beef meat eyeround
You should try TATRA TEE or Borovicka.
You're Welcome to Slovakia!
Thank you so much!
@@MattandJulia Don't forget! Trying please please delicios food Slovakia
Thank you so much for your lovely message! Really appreciate it 🙏🏼❤️🥰
2:50 What kind of a car was that? A Skoda something?
Ahoj.ste skvelý..áno ako Československo sme boli ekonomicky viac hore..a páčilo sa mi ,že ste skúsili naše jedlá..držím vám palce a želám všetko dobré ❤❤
lol i never seen svickova served with a jam :D
I am s.korean. i have been to slovakia for 3month. I miss slovakia
Nice trip
❤️❤️❤️
Love u
I have been there!
Beautiful city right? 🤗
i started watching your channel when you were in nepal. you are such a lovely couple.
Welcome to the channel ❤️
As a person from Slovakia, no way I would ever stay at that hostel. How did you even find such a run down place? Hope it was at least dirt cheap.
Haha, it was ver cheap, and close to the airport 🥰
Just before I am going to watch: how the heck to you get to Slovakia without talking about Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Serbia? Hmm. You've done videos on them before? Back of my mind that's it. It's a long trip by car; did you took a plane! Very pretty country Slovakia though I don't know it well. Will now watch and see what you enjoyed!
We did film some videos in all of those countries on separate occasions and I’m sure that will in the future as well 🤗❤️
With all the traveling you guys do, does Julia miss her time for baking, from how a LOT of us have first met her from TGBB Show?
I most definitely do ☹️ I miss my own kitchen at times 🙏🏼 I have a small Russian baking course coming out soon though 🥰❤️
Glad you liked Bratislava! We enjoyed it as well. I posted a video on my channel about our communist tour.
Really glad you enjoyed it too 🥰🙏🏼
The food looked really good
Oh yeah, it was delicious 🤤
Video starts 13:00
Nice city looking forward to see more of your trip in Slovakia :)
Can’t wait to share more 🙏🏼❤️
Now compare Bratislava in this video with one of Charlie Vietch's Manchester videos - conclusion: most of Eastern Europe already enjoys a higher standard of living than the UK
Slovakia is in Central Europe not Eastern Europe.
Welcome in Slovakia if you have any questions I can give you answers about Bratislava and Slovakia 😊
Thank you so much, so kind of you! Really appreciate it 🤗❤️
Thanks for this nice video of my city. Just one comment regarding the food. Sviečková is Czech food. The dumplings - Bryndzové halušky is slovak national food. Bryndza = sheep cheese. Slovak bryndza is also registered in the EU's Register of protected designations of origin and protected geographical indications.
Thank you so much for letting us know and watching 🥰❤️
