In 1993, a man named Jonathan Levin of Manhasset Long Island, would find himself taking on his new career as a school teacher. He would be hired at Taft High School in the Bronx. A school well known as one of the toughest schools in the nation, for students and teachers alike. His approach to teaching, and his caring personality would make it easy for students to put their trust in him. He was instantly popular among students and staff, and built a strong bond with the youth while there. It would all come to an abrupt end in May of 1997, when an ex students horrific plot unfolded. A robbery plot that ended in the torturous final hours of the beloved school teacher. When all was said and done, the culprits made away with just $800, even if they assumed that robbing the son of a wealthy Time Warner CEO would make for a bigger payoff. It only ended up tragedy. Rest In Peace, Jonathan Levin, and my deepest condolences to his loved ones. You aren't forgotten.

I'm sorry that happened to you. Some of these parents are ridiculous like their children. And the sad part is those children will probably end up in prison later on in life. I pray for these teachers these days. They have no protection from the school board and are expected to not defend themselves from these tyrant kids.

He's been retired seven years now and still has former students finding him on social media years later just to say thank you for seeing me when no one else did. I now run a daycare from my home but early in my career I taught then subbed at a middle school I once attended in my pre-teen years. While subbing, I stood up to one of the biggest baddest rudest students that even the principal didn’t bother. This was a 6’1” 300lb full facial hair 13 yr old boy while I was 5’6” 110lb 27yr old woman. He was very disrespectful to the lunch ladies so I jumped up to defend her and had this boy standing chest to chest to me glaring down on me while my colleagues told me to back off. After 5 minutes of dead silence from the entire lunchroom to see who would break first, he simply smiled and said “I like u. Yes ma’am, I’ll apologize and clean my own mess up.” 17 yrs later … he still gives me the biggest smile followed by a hug and asks how I’m doing and if I need anything. No lie … I peed myself a little that day. And while my story isn’t on this story’s level, I saw a big bully w a bigger heart.
Teaching is a tough job. And it takes a special kinda person to take that job on. I love it but I prefer teaching toddlers at my age 😅😅😅

I'm a school bus driver and stopped my bus in the middle of traffic--no hazards on when a 6'3" 250-300lbs 16 year old boy thought he could taunt, disrespect, and threaten me by trying to run up on me while I was driving and telling them to sit down. His friend jumped in front of him to stop him advancing. When I shot up out my seat I told him " You met the right one today buddy, I don't get paid enough to be threatened and I WILL give you the beating your mother's afraid to give you, take the charge, and get off and out of jail before the weekend is over and have a new job by Monday." Everyone went silent, even he was stunned for a moment and sat down lol. Drove everyone back to school and had the principal escort him right off the bus for good. You cannot let these kids think they can treat you any kind of way and get away with it. I'm glad that student respected you and backed down when he realized you were not taking his BS. You ironed him out and he respected you forever for it.

This story is the reason why I got out of the classroom. I was a teacher for nine years and although it was middle school, those kids are just as violent as high school teenagers. I already knew my limitations was going to land me in jail if one of those kids put their hands on me….. but also, I relate deeply to this story because I’ve seen many teachers try very hard to build a connection with trouble children. They would do anything to help that child only for the parents and the child to turn on them. This is a truly heartbreaking story. I’m now a therapist for children with autism, I just couldn’t do the school system anymore. As always, you are doing an amazing job by putting out the victims story so that we can hear their voices. You should never trust anyone in your personal space no matter how in need or helpless they seem. Some folks are under privileged but unfortunately the ones who try to help them are the ones who may suffer most. You ever see people make it out the hood and they are accused of never looking back? Unfortunately it’s because of circumstances like this. The same ones you feel bad for and try to pull up the ladder can be the same ones to pull you down because all they see you as is an opportunity. You wanna help someone underprivileged, you do so with caution from a distance to protect yourself. He should’ve left his help at school trips and pizza parties like most teachers do. I’ve had some an amazing teachers who cared a great deal about us but they didn’t let their help go any farther than teaching us that education was the key to making it in life , no invites to their house none of that. They know the reality some people are coming from a deeply broken environment and you don’t wanna get yourself too expose to that.

I attended Jonathan Levin HS in the Taft building. I was a student 10 yrs after the fact, but we were all very much aware of everything that happened and the teachers were great... for the most part. Unfortunately, Jonathan was too trusting, too loving, and too enthusiastic to make a change. Kids who grow up in the "hood" can be very disturbed and can't even begin to believe anyone can care.

I just wanted to point out that Jonathan has kind eyes; what really aggravates me is that he seems like the type of guy that would've given Corey the money if he asked for it and told him to keep it. You killed a man with a heart of gold just to get $800 a day for a few days. The students that needed to be hospitalized probably lost the only stable support system they could rely on, my heart breaks for them. Imagine the impact he would've had had he been able to live to retire. I really don't understand this world we live in.

I remember seeing so many of them crying on the streets and in front of the school. They were upset and angry over the tragic murder of their beloved teacher. One of his students, punched a building, and broke his hand. He was crying so hard! Mr. Levin truly cared about his students. I am so sorry about what happened to you Mr. Levin! RIP. My God....here was a teacher who devoted HIS WHOLE life to "his" kids. Those poor kids...I feel for them. People ridiculed him for the way he taught, but he got through to his kids, treated everyone of them equal no matter their color, background, etc. This reminds me so much of the movie, "Dangerous minds". This was such an enormous tragedy. 2000 people at his funeral? That just goes to show you the impact he made! Shame on everyone who didn't approve of the way he taught. Unfortunately, it took his precious life to realize how valuable of a not only a teacher, but a human being he was. Makes me sad and very angry! Rest on Heaven, Johnathan. You're missed by many. 187 is still one of the most underrated movies of all time. Still don't get it's props like it should. Even back then, that I knew that Method Man had good acting skills. It's a shame that good people like Jonathan Levin, who had a kind heart, soul and would have did anything for anybody. He definitely would the type that would have given you the shirt off his back. So disgusting that he was viciously taken away from society over what? $800 f***** dollars? His life was worth way more than that. And the POS that murdered him should have gotten the Death Penalty. He lucky he wasn't in a state like VA or TX BC he would gotten the DP for damn sure. It seems like the good always die young like the rapper Tupac once said. RIP to Jonathan Levin. My prayers and my deepest sympathies go out to his family and friends. Once again, this was a very well put together video with care, compassion, and love. Mr. Ortiz, you got my utmost respect sir. Once again, another excellent piece of work. Good stuff Jose. Another story that hits close to home. Taft was my zone HS and I graduated grade school as this happened in 1997. I remember being absolutely terrified to go to Taft. My Mom would actually use this school as a scare tactic for me to get better grades. I knew some STONE COLD KILLERS that went to Taft. Didn’t even matter if you could fight. Kids has knives and guns. And gangs was rampant. I actually almost ended up here but I got accepted into a better school. RIP to that teacher Mr Levin. Believe it or not, there was A LOT of teachers in the Bronx at that time that actually cared. Unfortunately this cost him his life. Between broken homes, deep seeded generational curses and trauma on families, Gun violence, incarcerated parents, drug addicted parents due to the crack epidemic, drug wars, alcoholism, systemic racism, a broken economy, hunger and poverty etc.. You truly had to a be special soul to even step foot in Taft as a teacher in the 90’s and early 2000’s. 🫡 This was definitely the worst school in NYC maybe even the entire USA.
