It was just a matter of time until something froze on the iDry...

Well I have to say I got pretty lucky. I'm not kidding when I said I woke up and the first thing that popped into my head was that kiln. And immediately I started preparing myself for the worst, expecting to walk out and find the vacuum pump cracked in half. Luckily not that! In fact I think I didn't even notice the damaged water line until I went to turn the kiln back on and it was leaking.
This video revealed a very important issue that I obviously missed when winterproofing the kiln. And that goes for any winterproofing really. Simply shutting off and draining the water isn't always enough. You have to also think about where water may be trapped inside valves, or sumps in long flat sections of pipe.
Of all places, I found those NPT/Compression fittings at Lowe's. Normally Lowe's never seems to have anything I need, especially in a freeze in the south. That PVC plumbing aisle was so stripped it was scary. But the little tiny Sharkbite fitting bins were full!
