Just came across your video while trying to get inside my only 1TB Toshiba Canvio HDD. I found a non serrated pocket knife popped it right open. Thanks to this I was able to put it in my PS3 Super Slim and put that only 500GB HDD from my PS3 into the Canvio case so I still have a 500GB HDD on hand. Thanks a million.
This video is exactly what I needed! I have a 2-TB Toshiba drive I was using as a network connected backup. It stopped working. Using this video I was able to tear it apart and figure out that the SATA-to-USB controller was fried. Now that I know my HDD is still Ok I can find a new controller or buy an after market enclosure for $20 instead of dropping $150+ on a new external drive. Thanks!
Thanks for the tutorial. The socket of my model was worn-out so the connection got lost sometimes. After opening it and squeezing the plug a bit it works like new.
Thank you for your video. I previously purchased a 750 GB Toshiba Canvio portable hard drive to upgrade one of my laptops, and did a youtube search for steps on how to take the hard drive out of the case. Thankfully, your video was the first one I came across. Although I was unable to use your method of breaching the case with the tip of a cable-tie, I was able to use the small precision type flat screwdrivers to do it. I bunged-up my case a little, but it's no big deal :-). Thanks again!
thank you so much, I managed to open my hard drive thanks to your tutorial. I thought it was bust but instead I only ha to put it inside another holder and it works!!!Cheers and good for you that you have all this patience.
I took apart my Toshiba Canvio Basics USB 3.0 2TB portable drive. It has the separate controller board, just like yours. Only problem is the hard drive is not as slim as yours. It's thicker. I couldn't make it fit in my Lenovo Y410p. So I ended up putting it back in the enclosure.
That's only for the 2TB model. See:storage.toshiba.eu/cms/en/hdd/hard_disk_drives/product_detail.jsp?productid=547 It's thicker (15 mm vs 12.5mm) because of the extra platters they had to squeeze in to make up 2TB.
Just some info: I bought a 1.0 Tb Canvio and the hard drive was useless for replacement of a laptop hard drive, there is no longer (or with the larger drive) a little card at the top of the drive. The USB port marries straight to the hard disk drive board. No standard internal SATA ports!
Yes most are simple 2.5 laptop drives with sata usb adatper, except Western Digital and few others stupid SATA to USB3 controller PCB is soldered on and if it fdails you are screwed with your data
Just and update for you, I picked one of these up today (7-8-2014) and found that Toshiba has changed the data connection on the HDD. It is no longer a SATA HDD with the adapter connection. Only the cable that comes with can be connected to it. $54 now useless as the drive can no longer be returned.
This is a pretty old video. Very old actually. Lately (as of 2020 so far), drive mfr's are getting hip to drive shucking. They are now either crippling the connector (which clear tape can uncripple it if you know which 'pins' to tape) or they are hard soldering the USB interface to the drive. I was looking for a list of mfr's that still have not crippled the interface so I can harvest a drive or two.
Hello. This video is excellent! I personally have the 1TB version. Great drive, but I have a problem. I believe the hard drive is fine, but the connector, more specifically the port where the cable plugs into is broken. (Think cell phone charging port breaks situation). Anyway, do you know what the proper name for the connector is? I would like to purchase a new one, and would hope this is possible. Thank you!
Philip John DiCriscio It’s a microUSB 3.0 B port. It’s not the same as the 2.0 one, though it’s backwards-compatible. But you’ll need very good soldering skills for fixing it.
I've taken apart a few external HDD's and put them in laptops and PC's. Funniest part is when they sell internal HDD's as standalone or kit, they're significantly more expensive than an external version are, an internal 2TB (3.5", no such 2.5" 2TB yet) drive here costs $140 while an external 2TB (2.5") one costs $80, hmmm which one should I buy???? pfft. But the downside is that they're usually very slow drives (5400 or 5900rpm), still a cheap buy for upgrading a storage drive.
Thank you so much for this video. First off, I have the same model of HDD that you're using here. Mine started acting odd, apparently my computer was having problems reading that information. This happened sporadically at first, but soon the HD completely shut down. There's a white light that flashes on the front of the casing. This light no longer flashed, and each time I connected the HD to my PC and laptop it would not be read AT ALL. No light - NOTHING. I searched for a solution for "toshiba external hdd not working." and variations on that search. NOTHING! I look on the back of the casing, mentally jot down the product number "P/N: hdtb105xk3aa" and I checked the video section of the search engine. I found your video and watched the entire thing. I started attempting to crack open the case, which was pretty easy with a small screwdriver I use to repair my eyeglasses. I see the HD, and I remove it from the case, as you instructed, disconnect the power connector that has the USB connector atop, and I connect the drive directly to my pc motherboard, and VIOLA! It worked. I was afraid I wouldn't be able to recover the files I had on this drive, but it seems maybe the problem is with either my cable or the entire power connection. Something is up with that one piece, but the HD is completely normal. Thanks to you I got the bright idea to actually open the case up, instead of taking to an "expert" that would have charged me over $100 to do what I did for free. Seriously, thanks you for the video. You're doing God's work for some of us out here, friend.
Good guide. Sadly Tosh has changed the design with the newer size drives - the casing is the same but inside the USB3 circuitry is integrated into the controller board, so there's no way to use it as an internal drive. Sadly it was a case of Schrödinger's cat for me - I bought a 2TB drive based on this guide and opened it with your technique, but not without breaking one or two tabs, making it hard to return!
Great video. I was looking for information on how to take apart The Canvio desk version which uses a 3 1/2 inch hard drive. I was able to get it apart, but I broke the plastic clips in the process. There were a lot of them and they were in weird places. Your video gave me a good idea on how to get things going though so thank you. BTW, the desk version has a separate controller board as well that requires power, but will power a 3.5" hd. I only wanted the controller board so I didn't really care about breaking the case. :-)
what is the component name that u mention as "controller board" in store? or what should i type on google to find? i want to repair my toshiba. thankyou. great video
I have a quiestion: in my case the HDD conector is kinda broke (it only works if i move it). Can I move the drive to another case? Or that's not possible?
i have this exact same external drive and the hard drive in my laptop failed recently. ive been trying to find a good alternative to buying a new one for upwards of $100. do you think i could remove the dead drive from my XPS L502x and replace it with this one?
Great video mate,, That's what i was looking for. I have a question... is it ok to remove 500gb and install a 1TB? coz, my 500GB not working. So is it safe to Install a 1TB? Thanks
I have the 1TB version, so it doesn't have one of those little boards connecting usb to sata. I want one of those though, do you have any idea where I might find one online?
I have one just like and a couple of weeks ago, it just stop working. The light on the front doesn't turn on and it doesn't show up on the computer, how would i be able to get all my data off of it
Wow, that sucks. I'd start with a couple of easy things first: try another USB port and make sure that it's not just a bad port. Also, as dumb as it sounds, make sure it's plugged in all the way. If you did all those basic things first then it might get a bit harder to fix. If it was me, I would take it apart and plug it in directly into a SATA port inside my PC. if you're using a laptop - not so easy. Depending on how bad you needed the data, you might want to look into taking it apart and putting it into another after-market enclosure. If nothing works, then you might just have a bad drive. Good luck!
Hey can i ask, i just ordered a 1Tb toshiba portable hard drive to fit in my ps3, would the Tb be the same as the size as the 500gb hard drive, when you have taken it out of the case ?
No, it's not actually broken. It's something called "Median Nail Dystrophy". It doesn't hurt or anything, it just looks a little different. Thanks for the concern!
this was cool so i thought i would take apart mine and this is the sucky part i took apart mine and that connector was built into the harddrive so its a true external harddrive -.- mine didnt have that adapter that yours had... sucks
We have the same hard drive. and My sata connector is not working, if you will not use yours please give it to me hehehe. Or Can I put that hard drive in hdd enclosure? To use my hdd again.
just bough a Toshiba canvio 1TB drive, and tried this, opened the case just to find out that the USB3 board is soldered directly to the HDD,and there was no SATA ports, so, just bought it for nothing cause all i wanted is expand mi laptop internal hard drive. I feel scammed :(
I'm finding hard to understand why YOU feel scammed. you bought an external drive that works as intended but YOU feel scammed because it will not work as internal? Would you feel scammed if you bought a phillips screwdriver and later on found out you could not use it as a flathead screw driver? The only scam that is happening is you buying a device meant for one purpose at a lower price and trying to use it for a different purpose.
I get the disappointment but I agree with Ryan. How can you possibly feel scammed? Or maybe I can even see feeling that way but it would be you who scammed yourself. :) Just saying.
Hello. I am writing from Argentina. Might be tricky. If the power supply was the only thing that was damaged, then you might be able to get away with trying a new supply with the old drive. It's worth a shot. Good luck!
e. s. Probably wouldn't work. You could try getting an external enclosure and putting your drive into that, then plug that into a second PC. You might be able to grab files that way.
Felix Ryushin My video is a couple of years old at this point and I've heard that the design is different on these drives. People are saying that the USB connector is soldered on so it's not worth doing this on newer Toshiba drives. I haven't tried any other drives though.
Do you think that this hard drive will be removable? www.amazon.co.uk/Toshiba-HDTB105EK3AA-Stor-E-Basics-External/dp/B005X7AXW0/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1394821586&sr=8-4&keywords=external+hard+drive
Earl Hechanova I've reading for a while now the comments on this video and it seems like this trick doesn't work on newer drives. The SATA controller board is soldered on, making it impossible (or really, really hard) to use. As far as your laptop goes, probably any 2.5" drive should work
Assuming that you're using another EXTERNAL drive AND that you have another free USB port available, just copy and paste from one drive to another. You might want to do it in manageable chunks so that you're not waiting a ton of time for it to be done.
My Toshiba poratble hard drive is not showing up on my laptop at all. It displays a constant blue led light to the usual white led light when it was working properly.
I knew it was Black Friday today, but i did not really care, its not a norwegian tradition, so yeah. I checked my Facebook, just boring stuff. But then i saw a post from a website called Komplett, Norways answer to Newegg. They posted a link to some crazy sale at their website! I checked it, but was disappointed. I scrolled further, and then i saw there was incredibly 75% discount on the Logitech G400 (new MX518) gaming mouse! I clicked buy at once! That was my Black Friday story. :)
bernardo vazquez I believe PS3 takes the smaller hard drive so I think this would work. Just remember though that this trick doesn't work with the newer drives - the USB Header is soldered on. My version just popped off.
damn! tried it but my hd doesn't have that nice sata to usb controller. it has the usb 3.0 connector built-in on the board. Model: Toshiba v63700-c, internal hd with the usb 3.0 connector mq01ubd100 (see the first big picture at bit . ly/X3M04h) At least it has been very easy to open the enclosure after watching you video. Thank you.
I have this exact same one, but when i opened it up the USB 3.0 thing was hard wired to the drive rather than just attached to an adapter. Now all my info is lost because the drive wont show up on my computer. Thanks Toshiba for shit products.
Awesome! Glad to hear it
Just bought a cheap 1.5TB Canivo and your video is still accurate. Much cheaper than buying a laptop drive out of the box. Thanks.

I've bought mine from Amazon (2014.05.05.) it looked almost just like yours, on the inside, and this video really helped me to fix it. Thank You :D
asmodeusdan Wow - cool! I've heard that the newer drives are built differently inside. I'm glad the video was helpful

Awesome! I'm glad I was able to help. This particular video has been one of more popular ones. I'm happy that it was of use to you.
Bought one of these back in 2014 still running.
yeah, i came here to see if the hard drive was just the plastic shell or if the thing was in a steel enclosure inside of the plastic. thanks.
Thanks for the video. Did not know that the 2.5" HDD of an external usb drive is compatible with the same installed inside a laptop.
Yes most are simple 2.5 laptop drives with sata usb adatper, except Western Digital and few others stupid SATA to USB3 controller PCB is soldered on and if it fdails you are screwed with your data

$54 now useless as the drive can no longer be returned.
Thanks - too bad though!
The interface board is only suitable for 2.5" SATA drives.
3.5" drives need additionally 12V, which you don't get from USB.
That sounds like a good plan. Just open the sucker wide open and let's inspect what's inside.
This is a pretty old video. Very old actually.

James De Vile Yeah, it sucks. I'm betting it's cheaper for Toshiba to go this route than it is to use that separate board that was in mine.

How did you get it started? The seams on my unit are very tight and don't give me any space to wedge anything in between the two layers.
i cant believe u got dat 4 30 dlrs at best buy, anyway good video, how was d switch? 4 d hard drive on d laptop?
thanks i have from this hard and i dont know how to open your video help me
got the same problem with mine..sucks, guess i gotta buy a new internal for my laptop...

thanks for the video!! really awesome. it was very helpful to me to take apart this thing. thanks a lot!
Glad it was helpful!
can you make holes in it so it can give a proper ventilation inside?
Right out of the box, I think it's fine as it is. I probably wouldn't make any changes there.
the usb connector is broken. that small piece that is next to the statues LED. one side broke. do u know where i can filed a replacement???
Great video mate,, That's what i was looking for. I have a question... is it ok to remove 500gb and install a 1TB? coz, my 500GB not working. So is it safe to Install a 1TB? Thanks
YOU'VE SAVED MY LIFE! Thanks.
I've got 320gb model of this. I wonder if it's gonna work.
Same here. Don't try it on a 3TB Drive either. USB Board directly mounted on HDD. No way of connecting it directly to a SATA port or similar.
Thanks for the tutorial! Very helpful! It worked for me so thumbs up!
Awesome! I'm glad it worked
Can I Use that Hard disc inside my PS4? (No like external disc) but if I buy a 2TB?
Is this compatible with the Wii U man? I want to start buying games on digital, your reply would be appreciated
The controller board doesn't provide enough power for a 3.5 HDD. I plugged it into my 3 TB HDD and nothing happened.
Thanks for your experience, I need to open this device, now i know how
Berserk8Ilidan Sure, just be careful since I've heard the newer drives have the SATA plug soldered on.
Is true, for example in my case T.T
I have the 1TB version, so it doesn't have one of those little boards connecting usb to sata. I want one of those though, do you have any idea where I might find one online?
beszt95 Amazon, for example. Look for “SATA to USB 3.0”.
thanks for this it helped me tear apart my external drive after the controller crapped out on my 750GB drive :-D
Michael J Very cool - thanks for checking the video out

Hey can i ask, i just ordered a 1Tb toshiba portable hard drive to fit in my ps3, would the Tb be the same as the size as the 500gb hard drive, when you have taken it out of the case ?
I see that nail on your right thumb is broken. Has it recorded now, one year after you shot this video?
No, it's not actually broken. It's something called "Median Nail Dystrophy". It doesn't hurt or anything, it just looks a little different. Thanks for the concern!
this was cool so i thought i would take apart mine and this is the sucky part i took apart mine and that connector was built into the harddrive so its a true external harddrive -.- mine didnt have that adapter that yours had... sucks
I've been hearing that more and more - I guess they changed their design. That sucks!
well mines is a terabyte so i think that has something to do with it im not to sure
Do you know if this is similar to Toshiba 1TB Canvio ?
finaly i know how to open my portably driv
but how can bild it back
I tried this with WD MyPassport 1TB they has the USB3 board soldered directly to the HDD, there was no SATA ports... Which sucks...
Yeah, I've heard that it's getting to be a pain on the new drives
Same case.. it sucks :(
This drive can install and use on laptop inside??
El disco duro externo que sacaste si lo desarmo lo puedo usar en la memoria de ps3 adentro para ponerlo como interno-?
man please help me , how do you crate that tab to open
We have the same hard drive. and My sata connector is not working, if you will not use yours please give it to me hehehe. Or Can I put that hard drive in hdd enclosure? To use my hdd again.

Hello.
I am writing from Argentina.
The power supply a few days ago I was burned.
with them also an external hard disk of 1tb.
had all the information of my life in it.
if I buy a new hard disk of the same brand and the same model.
you think you can get to save the information you had in the previous?
Thank you.
Might be tricky. If the power supply was the only thing that was damaged, then you might be able to get away with trying a new supply with the old drive. It's worth a shot. Good luck!
The connector for my 1TB Toshiba external drive has come loose. Is this easily fixable?
+Gah-Kai Leung
You can buy a new board or solder it
How much did you buy this for??
the sakaste hard disk can be put to the ps3 as internal disk
Next time try showing how you actually got into the case.
my laptop system is broke, can i put my disc from laptop to toshiba and put it to antoher laptop to copy my files? someting like this will work?
e. s. Probably wouldn't work. You could try getting an external enclosure and putting your drive into that, then plug that into a second PC. You might be able to grab files that way.
i need to know if this works with other disks, like 1 or 2 tb i would preciate a tutorial
thanks :)
Felix Ryushin My video is a couple of years old at this point and I've heard that the design is different on these drives. People are saying that the USB connector is soldered on so it's not worth doing this on newer Toshiba drives. I haven't tried any other drives though.
***** I can verify that the new ones the board is all one piece. Just followed this video to my dismay.
Thank you man!
***** Sure! Thanks for checking out the video.
This doesnt work on the newer models cause now the have built in the 3.0 connector to the hard drive
Ah, that sucks! I've heard the same thing from other users here. Thanks for the tip!
***** Yeah I guess realised it costed them but I don't know if they are any faster than the more expensive ones
Do you think that this hard drive will be removable? www.amazon.co.uk/Toshiba-HDTB105EK3AA-Stor-E-Basics-External/dp/B005X7AXW0/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1394821586&sr=8-4&keywords=external+hard+drive
TheSutt I would not bet on it , I bought the removable one back in 2011 and another one that was not last year
Not all are compatible sata ! :/ Mine isn't a Sata, It's just a Usb 3.0
Damien Lambert Same, now I have a useless hard drive and I can't return it either...
Can we covert it to sata?
where i live best buy was crazy at black friday!!!!
it works also , on android devices ?
Useful video!
can i put this hard drive into my laptop? i have the 1tb version.
Earl Hechanova I've reading for a while now the comments on this video and it seems like this trick doesn't work on newer drives. The SATA controller board is soldered on, making it impossible (or really, really hard) to use.
As far as your laptop goes, probably any 2.5" drive should work
My is full how do I copy it to another hard drive
Assuming that you're using another EXTERNAL drive AND that you have another free USB port available, just copy and paste from one drive to another. You might want to do it in manageable chunks so that you're not waiting a ton of time for it to be done.
My Toshiba poratble hard drive is not showing up on my laptop at all. It displays a constant blue led light to the usual white led light when it was working properly.

Hi can this drive fit the PS4 ?
Only the 500gb version. The 1tb and 2tb are bigger. Try something like Seagate Samsung St2000lm003 if you want an upgrade.
hi what is the dimension of the hard drive?
Gaming Culture 2.5"
I knew it was Black Friday today, but i did not really care, its not a norwegian tradition, so yeah. I checked my Facebook, just boring stuff. But then i saw a post from a website called Komplett, Norways answer to Newegg. They posted a link to some crazy sale at their website! I checked it, but was disappointed. I scrolled further, and then i saw there was incredibly 75% discount on the Logitech G400 (new MX518) gaming mouse! I clicked buy at once! That was my Black Friday story. :)
Can this fit in a PS3?
30 bucks for that!! crazy cheap i just paid £36 for a buffalo one - which is about $57
Thanks for video, that helped me alot. :)
Almost scared the shit outta me. I thought I got an IDE hard drive. lmao
It works perfect this tutorial :-)
Your video can be helpful, but how you go from trying to get into the case to putting zip ties leaves a bit to be desired.
this video helped me .. thank a lot
Warning, doesn't work with the 1tb hard drive.
Optimised Tutorials Yeah, I've heard that over and over now. It's unfortunate really because of how they decided to build the newer drives.
+Optimised Tutorials what if i want to put it in my desktop pc? i have the 1TB model
Lucas Tejerina Won't work. It has a custom board inside. I tried it too..
+Optimised Tutorials I just opened it with a mini-screwdriver, and it looks sort of similar. Should I risk going further?
Afraz Anosh I fully took mine apart. It's not the same. But if you dont believe me go for it
Thanks for the video
Josue Sanchez Sure. Thanks for checking it out!
excelent now i have a case to use with other disks
Meine Festplatte ist schon 7 Jahre alt und die Rohrwerte bei Crystal Diskinfo liegt bei "0" 💪
why in the hell are your finger nails sewed together??
Lucas DiCiano LOL, no, not sewed together. It's just they way they grow.
damn dog are you a humunculus?
gracias ahora puedo repararlo. thank you. now i can fix it. from PERU
Wouldnt it be ironic if there was a seagate drive in there lol
***** will this fit a ps3?
bernardo vazquez I believe PS3 takes the smaller hard drive so I think this would work. Just remember though that this trick doesn't work with the newer drives - the USB Header is soldered on. My version just popped off.
damn! tried it but my hd doesn't have that nice sata to usb controller. it has the usb 3.0 connector built-in on the board. Model: Toshiba v63700-c, internal hd with the usb 3.0 connector mq01ubd100 (see the first big picture at bit . ly/X3M04h)
At least it has been very easy to open the enclosure after watching you video.
Thank you.
im gonna buy a 2tb one, take it out, put my crappy 120gb in it, then return it....
Thank you!

I have this exact same one, but when i opened it up the USB 3.0 thing was hard wired to the drive rather than just attached to an adapter. Now all my info is lost because the drive wont show up on my computer. Thanks Toshiba for shit products.
omg i had to comment at 2:50 the scraping sound gives me goosebumps whats wrong with me lol
