    Launched a new channel for historical slightly animated battles! 0 subscribers currently so wouldn't mind new/some/any subs at all. If you'd like to see me make more of such historic battles - join me at: www.youtube.com/@gw-battlefield-histories
    Skirmishers / missile infantry that participated in the battle were not represented in the animation. Still learning how to do these videos so will have to be excused for it - or not.

      No. This is not simplyfied. This is more accurate and true to the sources i have seen, of ALL Cannae animations which there are hundreds! of, and i've seen all of them. It is 100% true to the sources. Read Polybios and Livy.
      All other animations leaving this or that part out. never giving the full picture. It was a major widespread engagement.

      In this case that would mean someone who is experienced and has great skills in a particular game

    This is the most accurate animation of the battle i have seen so far! It is exactly on point with polybios and Livy. The timing is perfect. The only thing missing is the skirmish foreplay and the simultaneous battle for the carthaginian camp at the other side of the river, which the romans attacked during the battle with some thousands soldiers from their northern (bigger) camp which were still stationed there.
    After the main battle was won Hannibal came to their aid in defending and then drove the romans back to their camp. Then he effectively besieged the camp for a night and morning and thats where he took so many prisoners.
    Some romans of the northern (bigger) camp were stealing themselves away in the early morning, passsing the other southern smaller camp. They made it. The ones who stayed at the camp were taken prisoner. basicaly 10 000 men.
    Edit: correction one mistake here: The roman infantry started to move AFTER the right flank cavalry was engaged. At about 3/4 of the battle for the roman right flank (roman cav getting charged, then dismounted and fought ON FOOT by celtic cavalry), the infantry started to move after they saw it and thougt: " well the cav doesnt do well, let the infantry decide the day". Something along this is what Paullus said or thougt and rode from the right flank to the center. (where he fell later).
    Timing. timing is everything. if you get everything right and then even add the units correctly it would be insane.
    It is actually possible to recreate every detail of this battle because we know so much of it.

    It is great, still, while they are in battle, it is weird to not have lookouts on horse, watchingfor enemy reinforcement (in hindsight, it seems weird they couldn't detect all those soldiers hidden for an ambush and those waiting to close the pocket far away, just thinking they were naturally defeated and retreating and not retreating to a place for an ambush - since you'd think they would use all their soldiers in a frontal assault against the mighty Rome)

      Hannibal ordered his men to raise as much dust as they can when reaching the field. Romans seen those behind them, but too late. Some battles really look absolutely ridicilous when viewed from this perspective. Most of Hannibal battles do, until the war moved to Africa of course. Keep in mind that there are at least slightly different interpretations of the battle available as well.

    I don't remember, was it in antiquity or middle age that fights between armies were scheduled on both side to avoid moving whole armies (and the costly logistic) for nothing? (just a costly trip somewhere for several months with thousands of soldiers, meaning a lack of soldiers for defense)

    • @GameWatcher545
      @GameWatcher545  Рік тому +7

      I've heard about it being done on occasion in Greece, it probably happened elsewhere as well too, in antiquity, but depends on who the enemies were. Greek on Greek violence is a bit different then when Persia joins in. I doubt it happened too often in any case.

      I’ve never heard of that happening, To the romans of the time probably would’ve loved that. Romans at and before the time of Cannae considered using anything we’d considered more than “basic tactics” during battle as a dirty move and un-Roman. They basically wanted to have two armies just go slug it out in a open field. Kinda like Cannae…. Which makes sense they had the best infantry in the world. They figured a giant army on the favorable train wouldn’t allow Hannibal so use any trickery, but they were wrong. Hannibal forced them to abandon those views quickly after Cannae. crazy after his death the roman writers tended to talk about him in a positive light. Dude was so good he killed near a quarter of your population and still gave him props. Hannibal op Scorpio plz nerf
