I remember back in the 70's you were pretty lucky to get to see a bear and most people with common sense treated it as a wild animal and not a friendly pet. The bear population now is 2 to 3 times as many bears in the Smokies. Too many people and too many bears in the same place is not good.

This is what happens when citidiots come to the woods. As soon as you see any animal stay still or back away give them space, you can see them fine from further away. The one guy taking the pic by the ledge could have been mauled within 2 seconds quite easily. Never turn your back on any animal ever and don't run, if you stand your ground they will see you as threat if you turn and run they see you as prey. A lot of bears will bluff charge meaning they make a run at you and if you hold your ground they stop because they were testing you, if you run they run after you and if they chase on foot they will catch you, and better to see it coming then have it jump you from behind and have your arms and legs pinned down. If you hit it enough they might think you could be a threat and leave you alone.

It's POTENTIALLY dangerous but the level of danger depends on a number of factors, not least how you behave in that situation. On the occasion with the momma I didn't freak out, I made noise (called to her) so she knew I was there and backed up so she knew I wasn't threatening. She then moved her cubs through the brush around me and we passed each other completely peacefully.

I was just a few miles from there at a shelter, about 15 years ago. The week prior a woman had been feeding a bear sausages from the end of a stick, right off the grill. Then she ran out of sausage and the bear became aggressive, It trapped her in a latrine for a couple of hours until some hikers (the ones whole told me the story) chased it away. They told me she was crying and hysterical. You cold see scratches from the bear claws on the latrine door.

Agree with everything you said, except "stand still", on the path if that is what you meant. He did the right thing by getting off the path and letting the bear through. As you said, running could have been bad, but the reality is the car was pushing him, so he got a mulligan with running. Either way, I don't know what happened prior to this, but that ranger pushing the bear towards this guy was bad. Maybe he was pushing the bear away from the crowd and this guy had horrible timing rounding the corner and seeing the show. I can't believe a Park Ranger would make this kind of mistake, so my guess is he was not aware the guy was there until too late...

Stay at least 100 yards from bears. If they have cubs, stay as far away as you can. Grizzly bears (not one in the video) are even more dangerous. Bears are extremely fast, even hunters get attacked and killed from time to time. Respect or die

This is a black bear, you never want to run away from a black bear. They’re basically giant raccoons if they even think you’re going to fight they’re likely to back off and find an easier meal. If you run they’ll think you’re prey. Don’t try this with a brown bear though.

If you stay cool and back away slowly while facing them you"ll see that black bears are alot less aggressive than most dogs within they're territory.they're diet is 75 percent vegetation and the rest is like fish, bugs or small eggs.the only time they would really come after you is if you feed "em and run out of food or try to touch one of they're cubs and of course anybody with common sense knows not to approach a bear regardless.

You’d think people had never seen a bear before. Love how the Park Ranger pushed the bear towards the guy on the trail. Lucky that turned out ok. The bear is smarter than all the people except for wandering in to the park. Probably looking for the garbage the brilliant people leave behind. Remember a fed bear becomes a dead bear. Give credit where it’s due and the bear gave everyone some excitement without any injuries.

Black bears are basically harmless. In fact, a lot of the bears in national parks are trained animal actors that are there to give the park a 'real' outdoorsy look. They actually love tourists, especially the older/slow moving, overweight ones with large pot belly's.
