BIRD | WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY UK | Buzzards | Cuckoo & Roe Deer

- Welcome back, In this video I spent a superb evening watching the resident Buzzard and trying to photograph Cuckoos on a Military Airfield in the South West of the UK.
This is a restricted area and the public are not allowed access, I have permission as a serving member of the Armed Forces and as a conservation volunteer monitoring livestock and for security.
The Cuckoo has always been a tricky bird for me to capture due to its shy nature, question is do I get the shot!!
A surprise mammal also makes an appearance.......
I hope you enjoy this video.
Take care of yourselves and others, and stay safe🙏
Kindest regards
Richard 🙂

Bloody brilliant ! Really enjoyed that !!! Great photos as usual! Great cuckoo capture !! As I’ve said before totally get your films ! I also got opportunity to study in an area that’s private ! I’m out this evening to the location but sadly for me I’m not allowed to share any of my footage on line ! I’ve witnessed some great activity like you ! So it’s a joy to watch your experiences!!! By the way if you ever down the New Forest direction and want to do filming or photography I’m willing to show you around !! Take care !! Thumbs up as always!!👍👍
Awesome, thanks very much. Cuckoo was right at the end, good job I had my 100-400 ready as if it was the 600mm I would have missed it, lol. Thats a big shame but still the experience is worth it many times over! Thats would be awesome and I will certainly take you up on that offer, such a magical place the New Forest, spent many days and hours on Military exercise there! But not with my camera, also some great species of birds like Hawfinch and the Deer, well totally awesome as you have shown on your channel. cheers Richard
RICHARD BIRCHETT Ya your welcome any time !! Don’t usually offer my help ! But clearly have the same passion 👍👍 Just a quick question have you filmed nightjar?? Obviously lighting would be awful but great experience to witness for filming etc !! Any way cheers again craig
A great watch as always Richard. Nice shot of the Cuckoo too, Thanks for sharing. 👍
Hi John, thanks very much, it was a lucky shot just at the very end on my way out of the main gate! Always pays to have a camera on hand! all the best Richard
Stunning picture of that cuckoo .
Cheers Michael, bit of a lucky one I think! All the best R :-) 👍
That was wonderful to watch. The cuckoo is a bird that I have heard but never seen, very pretty markings, and the buzzard my favourite was very relaxed, nice to see.Another lovely and interesting vlog,I felt the excitement that you had when seeing the deer and the unexpected landing near you of the buzzard.Great.Look forward to more vlogs soon.Alison.
Thanks Alison, I never get tired of seeing Wildlife and when the unexpected happens it really makes it all worth while. All the best R
Hi Richard wow what a fantastic video you have made the Buzzard was outstanding, that is some lens you have their, you certainly had a productive day, amount of wildlife their is just fantastic, you have come a long way since your very first video they get better and better, truly enjoyed watching this one thank you for sharing your video and photos.
Martyn, Thanks so much for watching them all through and very glad to hear you are still enjoying them:-) it’s a big lens and quite old now but serves me well and produces nice clean, sharp shots 🙏👍. Glad you are seeing an improvement in my vlogs, try to every time I produce one. Thanks again 👍
Amazing video Mr. Richard. Really enjoyed watching it..
Thanks very much Rahul that’s very kind, all the best 👍😁
Richard nice to see you are out and about. Nice video !
Hi Stafford, thanks very much, great to be back out in Nature:-) all the best😁👍
Nice video Richard. Looks like you have your own private nature reserve down there when flying ends for the day, how perfect.
Hi there Martin, thanks very much for commenting:-) I feel very lucky indeed, seems always the best habitats are the restricted and quiet ones with little human intervention. All the best Richard 👍
Amazing shots! 👌
Cheers 😁👍
Brilliant video mate. Great location too for wildlife..
Craig Maisfield cheers Craig, very kind! An awesome place to go. Same location as my piece on BBC Winterwatch last year. My Grandfather used to take me there when I was small, so a special place for me👍all the best 👍
@@RichardBirchett your Welcome. Such a nice place to have and the memories with it..
Nice one again Richard, Love the cuckoo shot, I will never forget my 1st ever shot of a cuckoo, had to carefully make my way through Brambles and stinging nettles, Scrached and stung I just knew that when I raised my camera it would be off I dont know if I was breathing at the time, as it looked away I raised the camera and as it turned bang I was in half a dozen Clicks and Breath 1 cuckoo in the bag, Far from a great shot with my little lumix bridge that I had at the time but a memory that will never leave me, All the best, Mike, ...
Hi Mike, awesome account of your time with the Cuckoo! So often like that, lol.. that’s what drives us types! Totally worth the stings, bangs and bumps! Not always about the kit, fieldcraft first👍 cheers for sharing, all the best R ;-)
Another great video Rich
Cheers Richard glad you enjoyed it 👍
Heck yea man. Awesome video bud. I just got my first cuckoo yesterday. coolest bird ever lol
Thanks my friend, they are awesome birds aren't they! Do you get the spotted Cuckoo?

Excellent video Richard. Looks like a great place for wildlife.
Steve Hedges Photography cheers Steve, great place and I feel very privileged to be able to use it:-) hope your well, anything new on the cards for your vlogs?
Hi Richard, yep I'm well thanks hope you are too. I had a great evenings vlogging in the week. I was looking for brown hares which I got and also photographed a barn owl as well. Couldn't believe my luck to get both on the same night. Uploaded the vlog yesterday. It's so great to be out doing some proper photography again. All the best Steve.
Steve Hedges Photography awesome stuff, how lucky! Brown Hares are a rare sight down my way:-( and you seen Barney as well🙏👍! Great isn’t it when you get lucky moments like that 😁. Will check it out, all well here👍. All the best Steve 😁
Excellent video mate. What a fabulous wildlife playground you have there. Very envious. Fantastic shots and video work
Cheers mate, I am charmed really! never take it for granted. Thanks for your support, Richard
Great stuff loved the Buzzard and Roe deer unless you get a tame Cuckoo they are a bit skittish, there's one called Colin round here but I haven't photographed him yet . Great to be out I have been into Reed Warblers myself recently. Great to see you out and about in the Jeep again
Thanks very much 👍😁. They are terribly shy, but still I like a challenge and they are such great birds to watch and if lucky to photograph. I’ve heard about Colin, a fine friendly accommodating chap 😁👍. All the best 👍
👍👍👍
Great video richard
Hi there Greg, many thanks I really enjoyed seeing that Buzzard up close. Richard
Awesome buddy well done 👍
Thanks very much, all the best 👍
Great watch Richard. Cuckoo's are so elusive aren't they? More than happy to broadcast there presence but always one step ahead when we try to get a shot!!! Funny story for you - was walking home from a day in the woods yesterday it was about 21:00 and I am reflecting on my day completely unaware of anything around me when a roe deer burst out of the woods about a metre in front of me and legged it into the woods on the other side of the path- scared the living day lights out of me!!! I was so lost in thought that I actually left the ground!!! 🤣🤣
Hi Shaun, they are a constant nightmare but it’s photographer against bird so makes it more fun, lol... going to try again next week for some more atmospheric shots in their landscape🤞🏻👍. Great story, I can imagine the scene, makes me chuckle 😂👍. That’s what great about wildlife not always predictable😁
Great video again Richard :) I'm curious about the location you go to for wildlife photogrpahy, it is a very unique spot and it's great that you have access to it. Great capture of the Cuckcoo in flight too! I saw and photographed my first ever cuckcoo yesterday, it was an incrediable experiance.
Hi there Ben, yes its a great place to go! I filmed and presented my section for BBC Winterwatch last year on the Airfield, was great fun but quite tiring, lol. Nice one on the Cuckoo, not the easiest birds to capture on camera. You including that in your next Vlog? all the best mate.
Great Video.... love the footage of the cuckoo. Pleasing to hear there’s a few pairs at the airfield.....😊
Thanks Gill, at least 4 so really good news, I hope to visit again next week:-)
Excellent video what a lovely place to take pictures what’s the food pack you use keep up with the videos
Thanks Gary, appreciate the Feedback. They were purchased through a Military Surplus store. all the best :-)
Great stuff !!! Glad to see the deer around, might pop out sometime this week and see if I can get a shot 👌
Cheers James, It was a nice surprise to see them on Windmill Farm side:-)
Another great vlog Richard, great to hear you have plenty of cuckoos down there this year - they've been slow to arrive here in Suffolk but have heard a few of late.
Look forward to your next vlog, take care stay safe & happy snapping
Hi Nick, thanks very much for taking the time to comment. Yes, quite good numbers again this year, let's hope they are stable and maybe increase in the future. Hope you get the chance to see and photograph them soon. all the best to you, Richard :-)
Awesome video
Cheers Rudy, glad you enjoyed it:-)
Nice video bro ... i love that car bro
Thanks Ariasa, It gets me to all sorts of places, lol.
Lovely to see some more footage again. The cuckoo is a bird I have never seen, just heard, really lovely plumage, and the buzzard my favourite.Always interesting and relaxing to watch,it shows how much time it takes to get the shots, but certainly well worth it.Thanks ,look forward to the next ones.👍
I know, I hope to get back there again to catchup with the Cuckoos, they don't stay around for long, sadly! The Buzzard is a great bird, to give it the name Common is not justified in my book! Mighty Buzzard, lol. All the best Richard
Great video mate.
Thanks Liam, really glad you enjoyed it, all the very best to you. Richard
Excellent video - looks like you’ve got a great variety of wildlife on your airfield there :) Good luck with the cuckoos - I’ve not even heard one yet this year since I’ve not been out along the wilder bits of the west coast at all yet...
Cheers Geoff, thanks they are a tricky bird for me! And yes such an awesome place for Wildlife, if not too much to cover! Fingers crossed you get out soon. All the best mate.
Great video! Especially loved the deer shot at the end, love how there are 'stripes' of colours leading up to the deer.
Hi there Jake, many thanks, I love those early splashes of colour. Cheers Richard.
Another amazing video Richard. I have been chasing Cuckoo's around for the last few days and I know how hard they can be. Can I ask also what bag hide you use as I have been thinking about getting one myself. Cheers Keith
Hi Keith, I hope your well and enjoying getting out again and doing some more of your great Vlogs👍. Yes they are a massive challenge but perseverance and patients gets there in the end! Well hopefully, lol... They are awesome, and by Lenscoat Lens-hide, will send you a link later:-) well worth the money 😁👍
@@RichardBirchett Hi Richard. Yes I am good thanks and enjoying open spaces again. Thanks for letting me know the bag hide, I have found it on Amazon and looks good. Cheers Keith
Cracking video Richard, cuckoo are also my nemesis! They always seem to be calling across the other side of the river Trent never on my side!!😂 Loved the buzzard footage one of my favourite birds. By the way what do you use to record your video? I am struggling with my wildlife videos trying to handle the camera and using my landscape camera (Sony A7ii) to record me, could do with something smaller. Thanks mate!👍
Hi there Scott, nice to hear from you hope you are well? Love them but their a hard bird to crack, lol... hopefully you will get the shot soon before they leave🙏🤞🏻👍. I shoot the Wildlife footage with my 1DX which is only 1080p but still useable and the vlogging side of things is with my GoPro hero 8 black. All the best Mate👍
I've never thought to camouflage my whole car lol ill have to try this during fall migration here in new mexico
I have got one that covers the entire Landrover but its a right pain to get on and off! I do find it works really well, I've had birds of Prey land on the bonnet scouting for a quick snack! Let me know how you get on. All the best to you.
Do you work for the Armed forces?
Yes I do, regards Richard
