Imagine if the electorate didn't fall back into tribal lines and SDP-L took 45% like they were polling at. What would Britain look like today? I suspect it would be for the better.
If you want a multi party system like in Germany, Spain, Greece, Austria, Italy, Denmark or Norway you will first have to get rid of the first by the post system.
0:45 He's not Lord William Rodgers, he's Lord Rodgers or William, Lord Rodgers. He's a life peer in his own right, not a younger son of a duke or marquess.
Unlike 1981 it doesn't matter if the Labour party split. They are already shedding votes to the SNP in Scotland and to UKIP in England. Labour's best hope of re-gaining power would be through an Italian-style 'pizza parliament' election result where they are supported by 4-5 minority parties. It won't be pleasant for anyone.
my God just how right wing were labour in those days when is split could be Justified in those circumstances Callaghan the last prime minister for God's sake
+kris wilkinson Not really. The Liberal Democrats always had a split personality. There was the social democrat wing, which Shirley is a part of, and then the Liberal wing of the party, which Clegg and Huhne, et al belonged to. The Liberal wing was in the driving seat during the coalition years.
In 1981 I was 16, two years late I joined Labour being a socialist, those who left in 81 should have joined The Liberals as the s d p faded away very fast ... History shows us that The Liberals propped up the Tories in the early years of the 20th Century and The Liberals (they just put Democrats on the end) did exactly the same in the early years of this Century ... Propping Up The Tories!!!.
Unlike the labour leader, who they betrayed Michael Foot all 4 stayed on the gravy train joining the house of lords,Foots principals prevented his joining
The Tories still took 42.5 in 1983. Even if the Labour party remained at the level of support they received in 1979, that most likely would've produced a small working majority for the Tories. Labour in 1983, SDP or no SDP, failed to win back enough voters to overtake the Tories.
Pretty much; they split the vote. It's a ridiculous situation in which the Tories can actually lose votes on the previous election and yet manage to gain over 50 seats! That just shows what a sham parliamentary 'democracy' really is; it isn't how well you do, it's how badly your opponents do. 2019 is a perfect example of this (and that in and of itself certainly wasn't a fair fight).
What we need is education on socialism in schools and we also need to teach the working class about what is socialism and more importantly what socialism has given them already. I have noticed that most people do not have a clue what socialism is or even worse they have a distorted view of it that has been engrained in their minds. Its so sad.

You have to get into Power first, using first past the post ...
multi party is a rubbish system it means you never get strong government left or right
strong government? of what? a minority vote share doing what the majority don't want, thats the uk.
quite right. All you get are weak coalitions
Kraut and Tea the first past the post system prevents the election of extremist governments. The Nazis got in via a proportional system.

shirley, didn't they try to have a new party of the centre left? It was called the Liberal Democrats if memory serves and it propped up the tories

it had a superfluous wing, and a second superfluous wing.
The enemy is the Tories

This feels very relevant now
These people can't complain with Starmer in charge. He made Labour centre-left rather than purely left-wing.
