On this day in 1958 {March 23rd} the Four Preps performed "26 Miles (Santa Catalina)" on the CBS-TV program 'The Ed Sullivan Show'... Two months earlier on January 20th it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #2 {for 3 weeks} and spent 20 weeks on the Top 100... It reached #6 on Billboard's R&B Singles chart... Sadly, two members of the original quartet have passed away; Ed Cobb on September 19th, 1999 at age 61 and Marv Ingram on March 7th, 1999 at age 60...
Well I listened to this song when I was a child . I've never forgotten it. This Island is somewhere off California , am I right, maybe not , but I've had this song in my head for nearly sixty years. One day maybe I'll go there. Long way from down under.
It's directly across the water from Long Beach, CA. There's boats going back & forth all day. It's worth a trip. It's been in my head at least that long too! I got to go there last July. Loved it.
My family has taken our boat to Catalina overnight each year since I was 6, its always a great time. If you every go be sure to go to the Avalon theater for a movie and show up early to see the organist play some tunes.
Our son flew my husband and I there on his 70'th birthday, it was so beautiful. My husband has since passed away, but what a wonderful memory. I would like to go by boat the next time I go!
With a name like yours Catalina, you must go. "Catalina Express" goes from Long Beach California to Catalina Island several times per day --- everyday. I've been going for many years and I always look forward to it. As soon as you get off the boat you can "walk" to the shops and restaurants (other things to) in Avalon Harbor and it's only a few minutes from the boat. Most everything is within walking distance from the boat. If you haven't already been there --- do yourself a favor and go. You'll enjoy it!! Steve
Nice video. Glat you got some shots of Twin Harbors. Cat Harbor and The Ismus as we called it.. We had a boat growing up, and were going there from the early 50's. Fantastic Island. I love the song. Captured the way it was then.
That is a really kind offer which I will take you up on, my holidays this year can be taken up to Sept. 30th. I had planned booking into the Holiday inn in S/Frisco at end of Aug., but having made contact with you I could book it in Sept. I found that hotel online, seems near waterfront, is that too far from you, I can always book another near you. It's my dream to visit Catalina Isle.
Take a tour to SAN, and I will take you the rest of the way to Catalina. I grew up in San Diego and have never made the trip to Catalina. I will be in SAN Diego for my 55th High School reunion on September 19th and 20th. Meet you in @ the Vagabond Inn on September 18th, take you to my reunion, and then we will get to Catalina by boat on September 24th. That gives us the 21st, 22nd, and 23rd to see my Hometown. All of it in SoCal is my treat, and no strings attached. paul4RatCanbydotCom
Good song about Santa Catalina Island-the singers and songwriters should have made a song about the islands off the New England coast-I am refering to Block Island,Marthas Vineyard and Nantucket_Santa Catalina is roughly the size of Nantucket
Wow nice video ! I love this song.. Has a great beat and reminds me hanging out with friends at a diner on a sunny Saturday afternoon..
We used to rollerskate to this at our local (11miles away) skating rink back in the late fifties and early sixties. Great music. Still like it.
The first time i heard this song was this month Dec 2019 in the movie “bad time in the el royal”
My dad first took me there when i was 2 years old. I go ther about 18 times a year and love it everytime
Grew up in Coney Island listening to this when it first came out. It is still a great sound...MauriceH
