      @@ArcadeFL It wasn't so bad until the lead guitar. It sounds more like a keyboard than a guitar. A lot of guitar vsts have that issue where the higher notes sound like a keyboard especially those cheap toy keyboards meant for kids. Bringing it down an octave might hide that a bit.

    Happy and refreshing to see some people actually do FLS tutorials that are NOT electronic/EDM/trap and such. I firmly believe that Fl Studio, and other DAW, are not at all limited to electronic music!
    I have done some basic rock and metal with FL Studio too and learned that everything is possible with lots of tweaking! (I'm still having a hard time to get a decent, thick sounding rhythm guitar tho)

    This was entertaining to watch and the end result was more than decent. Get a fairly competitive songwriter who has some experience with writing Rock songs and you have a passable filler track for a Rock album! Not a bad thing considering that you merely did this for fun and experimentation.
    It would be great if try to make more content with different genres, becuase there are enough videos about Hip-Hop/Trap and EDm on UA-cam. Let's make more content on Jazz, Country, Swing, Soul RnB and Acoustics Pop ?? Anyways, thanks for uploading!

    Lengthy but hopefully insightful comment ahead:
    I've been doing heavy rock with virtual instruments since 2013 and have three albums released (with a fourth one pretty near completion). It's definitely doable, but results will vary on how willing you are to mess with the instruments until they sound natural enough, and on the quality of instruments themselves. Indeed, it's possible to make acceptable-sounding rock with freely available VSTi only (which is exactly what I've been doing), but no doubt having access to Shreddage or Ample Guitar gives you an edge.
    You want a guitar that at the very least can do palm mute and bends/vibrato, legato is pretty good to have as well but you can cheese it depending on your setup. Bending and vibrato can be done manually with pitch shifting; vibrato is better done with an LFO whose amplitude is linked to a MIDI CC of your choosing or something. Now, you want your guitar instrument to be clean. Then you add the amp simulation and, let's not forget, the cabinet simulation if your amp doesn't come with it, or else your guitar will sound absolutely raw. Oh, and PLEASE use a guitar with round robin support; repeated notes sound horrible otherwise (see 10:55). Bonus points if your guitar is stereo, to simulate double-tracking.
    Drums are pretty straightforward, and there are great paid and free options. Just don't forget that 127 is not the only velocity setting for drums.
    Bass... You got plenty of it as well. Ample Bass L is a nice free option, there are some okay-sounding soundfonts over there that can work depending on how you use it (if your song doesn't emphasize bass much you can get away with just "OK").
    It's virtual, so you can add any instruments you need. Want an orchestra? You can get a complete virtual orchestra on your DAW. Additional guitars? Add as many instances you need (but beware of the mixing process). Want a kazoo? There's soundfonts for that. Needs more cowbell? Sure.
    The other great thing about virtual rock is that you can do things like impossible chords or absurd drum sequences, however, it loses a lot of humanity compared to real performance, so you definitely have to compensate by composing good songs.

      I just started making metal in FL Studios a few months ago. Any recommendations on good free guitar VSTs? Looking for a good beefy palm mute sound. Also any tips for doing pinches?

    • @nitroanilinmusic
      @nitroanilinmusic 6 років тому +4

      The guitar I use isn't available anymore on the site I found it, unfortunately. :( There's a bunch of soundfonts in Bandshed with nice sound quality, but no round-robin which hurts quite a bit. There's Junk Guitar if you have access to Kontakt, I never used it but the demos seemed good enough. Karoryfer has quite a few guitars, but since you're doing metal they might not suffice as they're always described as "good for anything but metal".
      About pinches... I'll be honest, I just cheese it with a very high note + vibrato. Doesn't sound completely genuine but does its part.

    Yes you can, but also no. Rock music, and acoustic in general, is NEVER quantized. You will never see a drummer hitting the kick, the snare and the hat on the precise beat of the metronome, as well as a guitar, a piano ect...
    If you really want to sound like real, put some ghost notes, move the notes slightly left or right and change the dynamic of every single note. this will be the closest u can get to recording real instruments ( a part of using good VST's and not nexus. i recommend realstrat for guitar and ezdrummer for drums)

    • @MagnaDrake
      @MagnaDrake 6 років тому +23

      I wouldn't say NEVER quantized. The audio engineer may want to slightly tweak a take so that one guitar strum matches the downbeat, or move an off beat bass note in case its not worth to do a retake.
      Rarely happens if the band is good enough, but sometimes measures are taken.

    • @RonanAquilius
      @RonanAquilius 6 років тому +21

      "but also no" but you still haven't explained a valid reason on why you can't though, everything you just said can be done digitally, i think a better criticism would be the fact that everything sounds the same without any minute differences in tone/texture, a normal person probably won't be able to tell the difference but if you listen closely im pretty sure real instruments will always sound better

    Nice sounding song man. Couple of things that I think could improve it though. Most people add vibrato or bend to long notes on guitar. Also if you want to pay attention to details you could reduce attack on some notes on arpegio since usually arpeggios are sweeped, pulled off and hammered on and that makes them a bit softer than regular picking. Also if you add tiniest bit of timing and amplitude fluctuation in general it would sound more like real players since nobody is exact. Lyrics would be nice too.

      Super late, but I’ll leave this response just in case anyone comes across this:
      Notice how at 4:34 he adjusts the velocity of each note at the bottom of the piano roll. When he raises it to the max, the guitar loses its muted sound. I guess in Nexus specifically, with the guitar presets, the level of palm mute is based on the velocity you set for each note. Hope this helps!

    Honestly, it was really good for the first time but if I may suggest to stop notes before the next note plays cause having the notes end to end makes it robotic. For the lead guitar, not gonna lie, it sounded like a violin. Anyways would love for you to sing! (Don't try anything crazy like death screams cause you'll hurt your voice)

    you should have done a little variation in the velocity as it would sound more human because we don't constantly hit the chords or drums with the same amount of power each time
