The 1999/2000 season was indeed a remarkable one for Gillingham. The team had a fantastic run, culminating in a thrilling 3-2 victory over Wigan Athletic in the Division 2 (now League One) playoff final. This win secured Gillingham's first-ever promotion to what is now the Championship. One of the most iconic moments of that campaign was Nicky Southall’s goal in this match which sealed a famous win for the Gills a goal that etched itself into the club's history, forever remembered by fans in what was a memorable FA Cup in which they came within a game of a double appearance at Wembley ultimately falling to Chelsea in the quarter finals. As for Wednesday this was a humbling defeat in a miserable season at Hillsborough Danny Wilson was very lucky to not lose his job after this only because chairman Sir Dave Richards was so loyal he survived this humbling but once Richards left to take up a role as the chairman of the Premier League, Wilson's position became increasingly tenuous. The loss to Watford a few weeks later ultimately marked the end of Wilson's time at Hillsborough, as the club's poor form led to his dismissal.

That 3rd goal was epic! loved that game
Brings back so much memories from the Gills what a great game!!! I can't remember if I was there or not up the Gills
I was there, travelling down from Cheshire. I SO remember that Southall goal.
When the BBC shows decent highlights.
I remembered the third goal well, but not Andy Thompson's, clearly he was practicing for THE most important goal in the club's history
Great memories. Don’t know how that temporary Medway stand stood up in that wind and insane celebrations.
