    I am experimenting with Linux for some time already. I am a Windows sysAdmin. I always used VMWare Workstation on my home PC to virtualize my experiments. Since I like Mint, I installed Virtualbox and tried W10 installation. I was so frustrated. My Virtualbox W10 machine was freezing randomly. After some duckduckgoogling I have found, that I need to switch the acceleration from Default to KVM. Since that was done - all ok. Now the questions: Why Virtualbox was freezing with the default setting. And, why it did not select the proper acceleration, when I told it, that I'm gonna install W10 guest. You did not change the mode to KVM. Does the installation of W10 guest work ok for you? And if yes, why I had to switch to the KVM mode to make it usable?

    Hey Chris. I finally decide to switch to Linux. I installed Linux Mint 19.2. Apart from a minor power off problem everythings seems to work fine. I have one Windows program I need, therefore I tried to install Virtualbox. I get to the point of ‘Start’. I have Windows 7 on a usb stick, but do not see how to use that image to start up the windows guest. The selection says ‘Empty’. Did I miss something from your video?

    tl;dr;
    You can use also Virtual Machines in your job, if you know enough about linux and a bit of networking.
    I have installed 4 VMs on my Ubutu working laptop. Instead of VirtualBox, I use qemu with KVM. One environment has a working TIA Portal installation. I use the other VMs are for CAE and Robot programmig software. Additionally one VM with just garbage and Java-Plugin installed, to program this very old vision system from Siemens. If you have enough cores and enough RAM, you can run 2 VM in background without much performance issues. To speed up the boot time, a ssd should be used. Sometimes I worked with 3 VMs at the same time (CAE, PLC programming, robot programming).
    EDIT: 2x Windows 7, 2x Windows 10

    • @ufoludek

      I use the same virtualization now that I'm running Arch but in the past I used more "pro" software dedicated for VDI etc. like Proxmox or Nutanix, the good about QEMU/KVM is that at least it's free and combined with Libvirt and Virt-Manager it's very easy to setup a VM on it, I made a video about it on my channel if someone of you reading this comment is interested :)

So I installed Virtualbox 5.2.32 (from the software manager, dkms, ext-pack and guest-additions) and setup Windows Tiny 7 (5 minute installation). However, I can't connect to a USB device (yellow exclamation mark) and don't have internet access within Virtualbox. Hey Chris should do a write up on setting up a PCI-E device passthrough based win10 VM, having GPU accelerated graphics will allow people to use Linux day to day without dual booting and still run the pesky things on windows they can't elsewhere with full GPU power (Of the GPU you assign) There is even tricks to allow Linux to swap between say a onboard when the VM is on and the dedicated GPU when it is off! Also easier to do in Arch/Manjaro AFAIK!

      You could, but you probably shouldn't, especially if your i3 has only 2 cores and 4 threads. 4GB of RAM is also not enough to get a decent expensive in Windows 10 after the overhead where you leave about 2 GB for the host (Ubuntu). If you need Windows and Wine isn't an option XP is likely to be your best bet.

      That would most likely be do to either over heating or application errors most likely. I have had that before with other programs, closing them through the cli in safe mode with thier pid numbers and uninstalling them and reinstall them fixed it.

    I was just following this and found that you can disconnect the Windows VM network when it asks you to log in with your account. Then create an account and it will setup a local account. I let it get to the desktop, then turned the network back on. Updates ran, local admin in accounts, no MS account in sight. Woot!

    20 minutes install time on 4 cores is ridiculously long in my opinion if it was on a SSD. I have an old system with an i5-750, a slow quadcore without SMT. The install time of Manjaro (XFCE and KDE): 4.5-5 minutes.

    • @zerotactix5739
      @zerotactix5739 4 роки тому +1

      Go to Microsoft official website and download. It's free. You'll just get a watermark on bottom right saying "Activate Windows", and you'll get a blank wallpaper and you cant customize your wallpaper / colors. But you can continue to play games , use ADobe / whatever for free, forever. But at some point you'd be fed up of seeing the Activate Windows watermark and want to buy WIndows.
      Quick tip, you dont need to spend 200$. You can get it for much cheaper ( like 10$) on certain websites. It's not 100% legal, it's like a pirated key, but it works, until you change your motherboard.

  • @try-that

    Chris I like your video's, but (there's always a but!) you need to read the manual for your new camera! Both your clock and the message board are so out of focus, it makes my eyes hurt :( I watch stacks of tech video's and they all have the presenter and background in focus. Please take a few minutes and read the manual.

    • @ChrisTitusTech
      @ChrisTitusTech  5 років тому

      Haha, yeah I actually worked hard for that. By default using a 15 MM lens and a 3.5 F/Stop everything would be in focus. I'll increase the aperture a bit to increase the depth of field, but I don't want to do too much as I like to shoot in low light. When I adjust the F/Stop up, the picture will get a bit more grainy because the ISO is adjusted to compensate. When you get into the higher end DSLRs, it's not as easy as "reading the manual" and there is a lot of thought that actually goes into the frame. It is a deep, deep hole one can go down to understand many of these settings not coming from a photography / videography background. The camera isn't like an iPhone or a point and shoot. I paid a couple hundred bucks more for a 22MM 2.0 F/Stop lens to achieve greater clarity and a shallow depth of field, so this was an actual design decision.

    • @try-that
      @try-that 5 років тому

      Fair enough, I know nothing about camera's, I don't even take many pics with my phone :) I use the phone for shoving ROMS on. TBH I like the way you have it framed, and the colour is miles better. It's the noticeboard that gets me, I only know what it says because I've seen it before, but if you put a new message on there, I'm not sure I could read it. I usually watch on a TV, but just checked with my laptop and I still can't read it. I don't expect you to do anything you don't want to, I mean it's your channel after all. But even though you edit it all, I wasn't sure if you realised how it comes over to your users, Not sure I would with the amount of video's you put out. It's not annoying enough yet, to stop watching. I want to see people do what they want on their channel, and not what the watchers want. So I did think hard before I wrote this, I definitely don't want you to take offence over it.

      @ChrisTitusTech  5 років тому

      @@try-that Thanks, I had no idea prior to starting UA-cam about this either. I figured out pretty fast why movies cost millions to make though. There is a TON of technical information in how shots are composed and getting a good video. I'm going to tinker more with the settings and try to bring a bit more depth of field without hopefully sacrificing too much detail.
