Laos New Year and Parade Ceremony 2024 - Pi Mai / Songkran in Luang Prabang, Laos
Songkran is the water-splashing festival celebration in the traditional new year for the Buddhist calendar widely celebrated across South and Southeast Asia in Bangladesh, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, parts of northeast India, parts of Vietnam, and Xishuangbanna, China begins on 13 April of the year.
Lao new years is considered a national holiday in Laos. Government offices are closed for three days to observe the Lao New Year. The first day is the day that people organize the celebration. It includes cleaning the house, preparing food and offerings to the Buddhist monks.
The Lao Water Festival, also known as Pi Mai Lao, is the biggest and most important festival in Laos.
The Water Festival is a traditional celebration in both Thailand and Laos, usually held during the New Year. In Thailand, the festival is known as Songkran, while in Laos, the activity is called Pi Mai. This festival symbolizes the cleansing of sins from the previous year and welcoming the new year.
