  • In Sauraha, Chitwan, lots more people are visiting to celebrate the English New Year. Because the last day of the year is a government holiday, more locals are coming too. People who visit Sauraha are doing fun things in the Chitwan National Park like riding elephants, going on jeep rides, and canoeing.
The Vice-Chair of the Regional Hotel Association, Omprakash Paudel, said there have been many more tourists recently. He mentioned that hotels in Sauraha have had lots of visitors lately. Even though a big hotel called Forest Park was 75% full, there’s been even more people coming.
Indian and Chinese tourists, along with locals, have been coming to Sauraha a lot, as said by Gunaraj Thapaliya, the Secretary of the Association. He thinks all the hotels and homestays will be full by Saturday and totally full by Sunday. At Unique Wild Resort, all 30 rooms are booked until January 4th.
There are about 160 hotels in Sauraha that are good for elephants, and they can hold 7,000 people at the same time. Including homestays, they can have more than 10,000 guests overnight, maybe even this Sunday.
Tourists love going on jeep rides in the Kumroj and Kuchikuche forests. There are also jeep rides in the Chitwan National Park. Every day, about 100 jeep rides happen in the community forest, where people can see animals.
In the park, Sauraha has permission for 32 jeeps. And there are more jeeps allowed for safaris from other places nearby. Suman Ghimire, who used to be the president of the association, said more tourists are coming this year because of COVID. People really like visiting when it’s cold.
Restaurants in Sauraha are busy with tourists too, according to Deependra Khatiwada, the current president of the Restaurant and Bar Association. He said the restaurants have been lively after Dashain.
There are three elephant rides every day with 30 elephants from the United Elephant Operation Cooperative. Not everyone can ride elephants because there are limited elephants for riding, but tourists who stay the night in Sauraha get a chance.
Places like Jagatpur, Meghauli, and Patihani also have lots of tourists. With New Year and Christmas coming, more Indian and Chinese tourists are coming too. Ganesh Paudel, who manages Jungle Villa in Patihani, thinks tourists will keep coming like they used to before the pandemic.
