I didnt notice the okays that much until pointed out. But it did feel robotic. The issue with imitating the patient's pace and tone is it can seem condescending. I would encourage more reassurance, smiles and eyecontact when possible. Telling a patient you understand, can relate or that many, many people experience depression and recover with CBT and medication can help bring them out of their defensive cocoon. When depressed, you just want to get back to feeling normal. Not happy, just normal. Looking for a sense of relief and release from the dread and despair. Many dont want to die, but they want to stop existing for a while as theyre so drained! Relating to them with true understanding can really open them up to a proper consult

Our huge learning hospital hired me to be one of the patients for OSCES. I played from simple family practice year 2-3, did 1st year residents first history in a group setting, but psychiatry was my favorite to play. The hospital paid great money for rehearsals where all playing the same part had to be identical with answers. They had real dr. offices and was filmed with sound 2 ways as residents often contested their answers. We had folders they would have to ask the right question to get one. I played a few kinds of psychiatry and loved it. The resident had to write a report on their computer and turn it in to their supervisor who was there. Some I had check sheets for and sometimes I also got to give the resident's feedback.

You are meant to match the patient's voice and tone so it doesn't overwhelm them
