  • The cargo ship JOHN D. LEITCH is seen upbound, departing Lock 3, Welland Canal, Jan.3, 2024.
At the same time that LEITCH is departing Lock 3, the downbound ALGOMA TRANSPORT is passing under the Glendale lift bridge. The two vessels meet above Lock 3; ALGOMA TRANSPORT continues down towards Lock 3, while LEITCH heads up under the Glendale bridge.
This is ALGOMA TRANSPORT's return trip from Duluth, and, this is her last-ever downbound trip on the Welland Canal, because in about a week she is scheduled to show up at Port Colborne to join the scrap line.
Her previous upbound trip through the Welland Canal had occurred on Dec.24, 2023, when she was carrying cargo destined for Duluth. She arrived at Duluth on Dec.28, 2023, dropped off her load, then took on a new load to be taken back to Hamilton, Ontario.
This round trip is her last full round-trip through the Welland Canal, and this leg, seen here in this video, is her last-ever downbound trip on the Welland Canal.
The plan is, that upon departing the Welland Canal later today, she will head to Hamilton, unload her cargo, and then quickly return to the canal to get up to Port Colborne (...which would then become her final UP-bound trip ever. Seeing as she's scheduled to join the scrap line up in Port Colborne, she'll never be heading back down the canal)
Update: ALGOMA TRANSPORT did reach Hamilton, unloaded her cargo, and made it back to the Welland Canal, entering Lock 1 for her final-ever upbound trip at about 10pm.on Jan.5, 2024.
Upon arriving at the Lake Erie-end of the canal, she waited at anchor off Port Dover for several days, then on Jan.9, 2024 proceeded to Port Colborne and moored at the scrap dock.
She was on her own power until the end.
    And that was it.

So sad knowing her long career has come to an end 😢 But her captain and her crew proudly went and took her under her own power to her final destination. She will live on through photos, videos and memories for her captain & crew and all of us. ❤ It would have been great to hear a salute between them. It’s hard to believe that the other one is 57 years old.
