    The size of your hands looks like my uncles who have been farming their entire lives (maybe without the scars lol). I appreciate the review - very solid with a lot of useful info. Sub'd

    Great review! Did you end up keeping it? Just got one in a trade last week and I love mine.

      Yes, I did. I also a popular video on tuning it and adding Skiff caged bearings.

    Nice review. I have the 229 kick stop red dark matter scale. Has really grown on me especially after rounding a few edgy corners on the carbon fiber.

    I have 1 and love it. People don’t quite understand how good the kickstop is until you get one. Kills regular flippers almost

      I agree. I was not going to get one because it was ‘just a flipper’… so I thought at first. Then I saw people talk about it more and more how great it was. It did not help that this version looked so good with the hidden flipper that the aesthetics and great reviews pulled me in. I made the leap of faith and was so glad. It is a flipper on a whole new level. All flippers will be compared to this going forward with only very few achieving anything close or comparable action. It is truly appreciated when you handle it. 👍🙂

    What did you use to round the corners? I just got one and the corners are crazy sharp and dig into my palm when holding it to flip it open. I want to round them off some but don’t want to screw up the finish and make the spots stand out. I was thinking of using the brown rod from my sharpmaker? I figure something like sandpaper would be too aggressive and mess the finish up

      I have a KME guided sharpener that has these diamond blocks that I could use for the blade sharpening. I took a 600 grit one and worked it around the corner until the sharp corner is rounded. Then I used my 1500 grit block to polish it. You could use a Dremel and Flitz, though that may take longer or go too fast depending upon what attachment you use and if you are comfortable with it. You could even use a simple nail file. Now my knife is plain Ti, so it looks like normal usage and polished wear. My big advice is be patient and stop and look at how it looks often.

      @@Robs_Nerdy_Knives thank you! I ended up lightly trying the brown rod to see how it would mark it up and it came out great so I went to town on it and all the sharp corners are now gone! I have an Edge Pro apex with the Edge Pro diamond matrix stones but those are way too expensive of stones to “try out” on titanium. 😂 They work incredible on blade steel though up to and including Maxamet. Thanks again.

    Great review and discussion. I love the skull clip but I'm with you on the clip eating up pockets. I simply turn it over (clipside down) and drop it in the knife pocket of my 5.11s. It stays in place and actually disappears in there nicely.
    In my opinion, or at least with my particular kickstop, this knife doesn't need Skiffs. A simple clean and lube and it breaks in nicely. Mine is drop shut.
    I've gotten so used to all the sharp edges, I don't even think about anymore and I'm no longer worried about rounding the corners.
    To my horror, I dropped the knife today and it went skipping across the tile floor. The blade opened up but luckily it didn't even chip. The Pivot screw is a little scratched up but otherwise it's still rock solid. Now that I'm over the shock, I feel like it's got a little character and I can truly call it my own. Kind of like the first fight with a significant other 😂.
    Anyway, it's a great knife and I won't hesitate to buy another Chaves in the future.

      Agreed it’s a great knife… 100%. Does it ‘need’ Skiffs? No, but are Skiffs nice and maybe, even if only slightly noticeable, make it a bit better? Yes. Could it be psychosomatic? Maybe, but I still liked installing them. 😏😉😁
      I personally hated the corners. It was the reason why I sold 3 Pro-Tech Malibu knives. I would not have kept it, we’re it not for the rounding and I know others had issues, so I wanted to confirm that it is an easy fix so they will enjoy the knife. 🤜💥🤛
      I may still round the back of the skull clip and use it, since this clip turned out so well. You may see it on a future video… who know. 🤔👍

      @@Robs_Nerdy_Knives lol I know what you mean about Skiffs. I resisted the urge and decided to give the Reate factory bearings a shot and I gotta say I'm just in love with the action. The knife is so thick and robust it I don't think a couple extra balls makes any difference. However, there's always tomorrow and I may wake up and decide to switch em out for Skiffs just for the sake of experimentation, but not for any need. Again, just my humble experience with my own piece.
      Internating point you make about the Malibu. I never noticed any discomfort with mine. Glad you were able to mod your Redencion to make it a keeper.
      If I had a Work Sharp I'd definitely tune the clip like you mentioned. I think that's a fantastic solution brother. I look forward to the follow up video on yours. Nobody else seems to be talking about it but it's a real pocket grater...
      I'm carrying my large Sebenza at the moment for a meeting. Talk about a perfect pocket clip. It has never so much as left a mark. And the way they do the milling under the lockbar makes it oh so smooth👌

      LOL. Well, I can understand that about the Reate bearings. On my Liong Mah GSD V2, I did replace the washers with Skiffs with zero difference. The Reate ones were not noticeable so I took out the Skiffs and put them back. I did that on my Urban EDC F5.5.
      Some knives just do the clip well. My Custom Trevor Burger Urban XL is perfect unlike the Urban EDC LC by Trevor Burger. I manually polished the clip like my Chavez Redencion 229. 👍

    you said bearings and washers like 10 times each, which is it?

    • @Robs_Nerdy_Knives
      @Robs_Nerdy_Knives  4 місяці тому

      If you are familiar with a Kickstop design, it is both. If you are familiar with Skiffs, then it is both.
      Kickstop uses a PB washer for the flipper that hides. Skiffs are actually PB washers that are milled out with a radius milling that allows a ceramic ball to fit in. They are not crimped over the ceramic bearings.

    I was truly disappointed. I believe it’s because it doesn’t come with thumb studs like the older versions. Mines really stiff out of the box. I thought it would be more nimble. It’s not that great aesthetically. I believe that this is just a gimmick. This is possibly the worst knife I purchased this year.

    • @Robs_Nerdy_Knives
      @Robs_Nerdy_Knives  Рік тому

      I’m sorry to hear that as it might have been an off one or this variant is just not for you. I love mine but I did a few things to make it superb. I added Skiff washers (usually try to do in all my knives), tuned my detention because I don’t like to wait for the break in, rounded the sharp corners at the base, and rounded inside facing and contacting part of the clip. I personally love the Kickstop as it makes this one of my greatest flipper only knives. For me, it was not a gimmick. If I get a flipper only, it had better be outstanding and this is for me at least. But it may just not be for you. I do not like any of the other Chavez knives at all, so I’m glad he did this one. It’s nice to have a bunch of choices! 👍🤜💥🤛

      @@Robs_Nerdy_Knives I own the previous version with thumb studs. I love it. I just didn’t wanna have to do a bunch of work to make the new one with the Kickstop perfect, you know? I just put it in my safe. I’ve never carried it so perhaps one of these days I can make my money back. If I had more time and patience, I may be able to tune it in but as of right now, I do not. I really miss the thumb studs from the previous version.

      You could see if he still makes customs (www.chavesknives.com/customs). I suspect with only buying USA, then all Herman, Arno Bernard, Trevor Burger, Ansø, etc. knives are off the table. These guys also make great customs and production knives.
      There are too many good knives and I do not have unlimited funds for me to make a ‘I buy only USA’ choice. I appreciate USA custom knife makers who give us an offering of an affordable production knife that may not be made in the USA only.
      By the way, I do very much like the USA knives that I own, so I definitely would prefer to buy USA if offered and available. 👍

      @@Robs_Nerdy_Knives its such a nice knife tho. So so nice. But like you said there are lots and lots of choices for me. I actually just bought a spyderco shaman, it’s more of a production knife than the Chavez but it scratched the new knife itch for now haha
