    let's do what we can to make sure they go the way of the condor, and not the dodo!

      Awesome motto, Marco! Pinned so more people can see it.

    It’s somewhat upsetting how many of these birds are at such great risk, and yet they get absolutely no attention on the global stage. I would love to have the opportunity to share the stories of these birds, but also the people working to protect them. I really appreciate you giving these birds some of the attention they deserve!

      Thank you, Harrison and Evan! I hope you do get that chance to cover the rarest birds in the world. Each one would be a unique story and even a small amount of attention/money could make a difference for the species. Besides birds, you might dig into critically endangered reptiles/insects to see if there are any stories you can cover. Thanks for the work you do connecting people with nature!

    I got lucky and I may have created a close to accurate rare birds list, if you are interested I can comment the list.

      That would be awesome, Alauahio! It's so nice when people share their knowledge. I notice even your name is a reference to a bird on the edge of extinction. Thanks for watching!

    It's good to hear a few species populations are recovering but mostly it seems a desperately sad state of affairs. Thanks for making this video.

      Hi My Birding Year! I think of it this way: we all wish someone had saved the Dodo in the 1600's. These species are OUR Dodos! We can save them from extinction if we try. But you're right, overall trends mean that even if we save some species there is still a wide-scale decline in natural living things. It's difficult to reconcile, but I think both things are true. I appreciate you watching again this week!

    Reminds me of my old rarest bird video, but you did so many more birds!

      Can you link it if it's available? I remember we talked this idea a while ago and you said it's really hard to tell if birds are rare or extinct. Can confirm from making this video. :) It seemed like a natural counterpoint to the "What is the most abundant bird?" But I want to watch yours too!

    Hi Steve, I once saw a California Condor as I was driving down Hwy 1 on the California coast-it was such a thrill after coming so close to extinction. I’ve also seen a couple at a place called The Pinnacles, in northern-Central California, which is a place also known for its tarantulas.

      @BioBush  2 роки тому

      Hi Mary Rose! It's nice to hear from you again. :) Seeing a California Condor would be amazing. They're so BIG. I hope their recovery continues so we can all enjoy the sight of a Condor soaring in the sky. Thanks for sharing your bird experience!

    Many North American birds we take for granted, like Bald Eagles, Ospreys, Brown and American White Pelicans, Double-crested Cormorants, Eastern Bluebirds, and Great and Snowy Egrets, came dangerously close to extinction. The first five were saved by the banning of DDT. The bluebird was saved by the erecting of birdhouses, and the egrets were saved by activism against the use of their feathers in fashion.

    • @BioBush
      @BioBush  2 роки тому

      This is so much good information, Vernon! Plus the Wild Turkey. Those are all interesting stories that deserve a closer look. We can't take any species for granted. Thanks for being so generous with your knowledge!

      And Wood Ducks. Unregulated hunting was driving them to extinction, but then hunters learned that the birds should be conserved or else they’d be gone forever. Hunting of Wood Ducks was temporarily banned, and Ducks Unlimited was founded. The species has since recovered, and harvesting of all game birds in North America is now regulated to sustainable levels.

    The Hyacinth Macaw is also now extinct in the wild...killed for their beautiful feathers; and those that remain have been saved for their feathers. It’s a shame people can’t simply *admire* the beauty.

    • @BioBush
      @BioBush  2 роки тому

      I work with a couple Hyacinth Macaws and am happy to report that the Hyacinth Macaw was declared Endangered in 2000, then moved up to Vulnerable in 2014. There aren't many (only 4,000 compared to 90,000 in 1990) but they are not extinct in the wild. I totally agree about just admiring beautiful birds. No need to end their lives just to get some feathers.

    You should add some of the Hawaiian bird that are critically endangered like the kiwiku

      Hi Xtle! Is there a resource for which Hawaiian birds have the lowest populations? I tried my best to scour for critically endangered species, but recognize that there will be many more out there. Thanks for watching!

      You taught me something new again, Vernon! I did not know about the Night Parrot! It's always risky to say that something is unique in biology. There is always an exception. And what a rare and interesting-looking bird, too! Like a mini Australian Kakapo.

    Is that one of the forests that brazil is cut & burning? To make space for cattle

    • @BioBush
      @BioBush  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Richard! Unfortunately, yes. And this is dry forest with trees that are hundreds of years old and grow back slowly. I made a small donation to help preserve some Caatinga forest for reintroduction of Little Blue Macaws. Other people are welcome to as well!

    The Socorro Dove and Guam Kingfisher are extinct in the wild.

    • @BioBush
      @BioBush  3 роки тому +1

      That's a great point, Vernon! So is the Little Blue Macaw. I tried to go with the total population in/out of human care. In this video I am *sure* something is wrong, because well-documented data is not there for really rare species. Also photos. Hopefully imperfect data is enough to get the point across, that there are bird species in the process of disappearing from the world. I really do need a way where you can watch videos early and catch mistakes the way you do. :) Anyway, thank you for watching!

    All this is due to inhuman greed & ignorance all they care about is money.

    • @BioBush
      @BioBush  3 роки тому

      People are interesting, and yes, our society is structured so that money is an easily measured "score" that people can focus on. People also care about relationships and stability and beauty, but those are much less easily measured than money, which is often generated at the expense of those other things. They are NOT mutually exclusive though. A stable, beautiful, ecologically connected economy would also generate money. It's interesting to imagine how that might work. Thanks again for watching, Richard!
