A friend of mine once gave me Marmite on toast. I mean a tiny dab of Marmite barely enough to discolor the bread. To this day it was the most horrific thing I have ever tasted, and the worst thing was that no amount of brushing my teeth or mouthwash would get the taste out of my mouth FOR TWO DAYS. If I was starving and given the choice of Marmite or death...man, I would have to think long and hard about that.

British family opened tea shop and served quite few things like savory scones, strawberries and clodded cream, shepherds pie, variety of Brit loved high tea sandwiches and sweet cakes, etc. Since college, I also enjoy digestables with chocolate on the back, no dunking in tea though, lol...Haven't tried anything else. We have HP sauce in America too, but it’s called steak sauce and put on your steak. British food is relatively bland compared to American food and even our food is considered fairly bland to other countries. The foods you see in this video are more so what you’d call a struggle meal like a ketchup sandwich; mustard on saltines; syrup on toast, basically taking whatever you have in your cabinet and mixing it together to eat because you’re starving and you don’t have money to buy food until next week.

I think you would love Cajun red beans and rice. It’s kidney beans cooked. Once cooked some are removed and mashed then put back in to make a creamy texture. Cooked in with the beans is a mix of onions, bell peppers and celery all finely chopped and sautéed as well as cooked sausage cliched into coin shaped pieces. Add water and seasoning then boil down to a stew consistency. Serve over rice with a side of cornbread. In decades past this was a meal that took all day to cook. Today there are cans of beans made for this meal by a company called Blue Runner. Today we sauté the onions, bell peppers, and celery first. Add the cut up sausage to brown in the same pot, add the beans from the can, add water, bring to a boil, reduce heat to low boil stirring occasionally until desired thickness. Cook pot of rice. Season the beans to your personal taste. Our local sausages have plenty of spice so we have to be careful. What’s good is you can make it thin to be a creamy soup or you can make it thick to be like a stew.

I enjoy beans and would fry beans on toast but it would depend on which beans and how they’re prepared. Being Cajun I’ve tried some foods that some people would not want to try. An old Cajun breakfast you could try is eggs and rice. Most Cajun meals are made with rice and we tend to have leftover rice. The simple version of eggs and rice is to take about a cup of cooked rice and reheat using steam. We use to do this in a small pot on the stove but now use the microwave with a little water and covered. We fry two eggs till white is firm but yolk is still a bit runny. Place eggs on the rice while the rice is still steaming hot and then quickly stir. The heat from the rice will continue to cook and firm the yolk. Season with a dash of salt and pepper. Adding a teaspoon of butter also adds to the dish. If there’s leftover beans and meat from the meal the night before you can also add that to the dish. I add a Cajun seasoning mix, soy sauce, or sesame oil for a different flavor. Wife cooks and chops up a slice of ham or you can substitute cooked sausage to add to the eggs and rice. My personal favorite breakfast is a sandwich made with one fried egg, one fried slice of ham, and one slice of cheese. If you have it available you can make it better by adding lettuce, onions, tomato, and or pickles to your personal taste and preference.

Branston "pickles" are fermented and therefor not really anything pickled in the first place. There is a massive difference is flavor and texture.
Fermenting is a preserving souring using edible bacteria and then adding an acid to stop the process. The most common fermented thing in the US is many hot sauces since its easy to do for various peppers.
Pickling is using an acidic solution for preservation purposes.
I do a lot of both in my home kitchen and its different scientific processes.

The only places that I have been able to find most British foods are in British stores here in the states. When my parents were still alive, we would shop there quite a bit. My dad loved beans on toast. He was raised eating it and he said that the American beans were completely different. I have gotten spoiled on chocolate because British chocolate is so much better than American, even Cadbury even though we have that brand here.

I prefer sweedish/german chocolate which theres plenty of in the chocolate aisles of american stores. Cadbury is only popular around easter because they make the small eggs. Other than that we dont really have any british food. In fact My local grocery stores has a section for everything BUT british food. german, latino, italian, korean, japanese etc but they dont keep anything british around lol.

@@nullakjg767 That is why my family goes to specialty British shops. There are quite a few of them where I live. And Cadbury has so much more than just the mini eggs. They have lots of chocolate bars. I love the Flakes, Crunchies, and Dairy Milk Mint Crisp.

If it's something you're raised with it's Normal !! Like when I was Little amd Very Poor we would eat Vienna Sausage on Bread with Mayo ! I would eat it today and think, That's Disgusting!! And I've Never seen that Brand of Pickle !! LoL Haven't seen Marmite either. My Son had a Friend in Australia and She sent him some to try. We opened it, and thats it !! Hehe

Kids in the US just don't eat beans - usually. That's the kind of food I could eat if I felt like I was starving to death. If you're starving, foods taste good that you normally wouldn't eat.

I live in California. Almost everything is available on Amazon. I lived in an area that had a lot of Jamaicans, and where you find Jamaicans you will find products from the UK in the supermarkets. There also many specialty stores in the LA area. My late wife was from Scotland so I am familiar with many of these things. I do not like Marmite, nor do I like haggis.

My American palate just can’t do beans on toast. The taste is fine since I like baked beans but the texture of mushy beans on soggy toast just isn’t appealing. I haven’t tried Marmite yet but I feel like I might like it since I like yeasty and salty flavors.

It’s not even the kind of baked beans we’re used to. More like beans in tomato sauce. Beanie weenies sans weenies.

I wonder why the cheese on toast sounds so foreign to them. I had that throughout my childhood, and still do. Most folks I know also have this. 🤷🏾‍♀️

Welsh Rarebit is the ultimate expression of cheese on toast. Had it in the UK, the one I had in the cafe at Guildford Cathedral was mind-blowing, been trying to replicate it ever since.

The only place you might find Branston Pickle in America is on the “UK Foods” shelf of a grocery store, if they have one 😂
That is definitely not something you can find easily here, and most Americans will not have heard of it

So Ive lived in America all my life and I have NEVER heard of Branston Pickle, I looked it up and you definitely can get it here, apparently it would be in the "international" section of a grocery store. Which.....makes sense, but also I dont think Ive ever seen a "British" section of that aisle before lmaoooo. Its typically like Asian, Mexican, and then maybe those brokes down a bit more like Thai, Japanese...lolol. If it still is like an american pickle in its idea, Im willing to bet id really like it though. Things that are pickled/fermented are TASTY lmao.

I don’t know about beans on toast but I have no problem with beans and toast. In fact as a child we had hotdogs cut up in our baked beans that were seasoned and we added a little green pepper, onion, and garlic served with a piece of toast. I can’t get with opening the can and putting the contents in the microwave. I don’t think cheese can’t save that baby.

I have Vegemite in my kitchen all the time. My youngest brother sends me some once a year. It lasts about that long. I like it on toast with butter. I would be open to trying Marmite. I heard it's similar.

Marmite is stronger and more like a thick syrup (like thicker molasses) rather than a paste.
