You might change your mind about Billie Burke (the Witch of the North) not being all the beautiful if you consider that she was born in 1884. This movie was 1939. Billie Burke was 55 years old here. I say she's doing pretty well!
Burke was married to Florenz Ziegfeld, who was the producer of the famous Ziegfeld Follies. She stopped her own show business career when she married him, but the stock market crash of 1929 ruined his finances and she became the bread winner. Her unique, champagne-bubbly voice was perfect for playing eccentric air headed wives or spinsters, though she occasionally played a more serious role. She was, in actuality, an intelligent woman who knew how to use her assets.

The song Over The Rainbow is one of the most iconic numbers in a musical and my personal favorite in this movie.
    Delicious movie trivia:
    >The "oil" that they used to lube up Tin Man's joints was actually watered-down chocolate syrup.
    >The horse pulling the carriage in The Emerald City kept licking off the gelatin powder that turned its coat purple, red and yellow.
    Sweet movie trivia:
    >Jack Haley, the actor who played the Tin Man was the replacement for Buddy Ebsen, who suffered an allergic reaction to the makeup. The voice Jack used for Tin Man was reportedly one he'd use when reading good night stories to his daughter, his real voice was gruffer and deeper.
    Sad movie trivia:
    >In the scene where Dorothy, Scarecrow and Tin Man meet The Cowardly Lion, you can see Judy bury half of her face in Toto's fur. This is because she found it difficult to keep a straight face when Bert Lahr started blubbering as the Lion, and the producers would get mad and slap her because of it.
    >In the poppy field scene when Glinda makes it snow to negate the Wicked Witch's sleeping spell, the "snow" is actually asbestos flakes.
    >The pyrotechnics used for the Wicked Witch of the West's entries and exits inflicted 2nd degree burns on Margaret Hamilton's face and a 3rd degree burn on her right hand. She understandably refused to not only do any more stunts involving pyrotechnics, but she missed 6 weeks of filming due to hospitalization.

Back then they didn't know asbestos was toxic. The silver paint was mostly only an issue for the actor who was originally going to play Scarecrow, Buddy Ebsen, because he was highly allergic to it.
The burns that Margaret got while playing the witch were from when she disappeared in flames in Munchkinland because the trap door she was supposed to drop through didn't open fast enough.

The hanging dwarf is a myth. But the rest is true. That's not even the original Tin Man. The paint took Buddy Ebsen out. But he survived and eventually stared in The Beverly Hillbillies. The dwarves were brought in from all over the country and most had never seen another dwarf before. They went buck wild. The movie Under the Rainbow (1981) is based on their debauchery which was legendary in Hollywood for many years.

    • @johnnehrich9601
      @johnnehrich9601 4 місяці тому +4

Yes, the myth of the dead munchkin came about because of the low resolution of the movie on the early tvs. It is actually one of the exotic birds that got frightened when the three of them started toward the backdrop. But anyone who knows how they actually made movies back then knew this was noise. This was always a closed set and the actors who played the munchkins were nowhere around at that time. And those are "real" trees in the background, just flats which wouldn't support any weight. Finally, the body would have discovered long before the movie was released and they would have refilmed it.

Fun fact I learned from a class in college: this movie was basically a box office bomb when it first released in 1939. (I'm pretty sure mass audiences were tired of musicals by that point, among other reasons). Fast forward to the 1950s, televisions were just becoming widely accessible, and newly established TV networks were looking for old movies that they could buy the rights to air for cheap. The Wizard of Oz was one of the least known, so it was cheap and got bought up by multiple networks. It started airing all the time on TV in that decade, and only then became a beloved classic as more and more generations saw it. So even though it came out in '39, it took almost 20 years for most people to even see or hear of it, and now it's so ingrained in pop culture. I just thought that was interesting.

audiences were not tired of musicals in 1939, The Wizard of Oz had the unfortunate timing of being released the same year as Gone With the Wind which consumed the public, the box office and every award you could think of.

You need to watch Return to Oz 1985. It's based on The Marvelous Land of Oz (1904) and Ozma of Oz (1907), two other books in the series. Totally different vibe. The Scissor Sisters even used it as a basis for a song about the meth epidemic back in the day. The song is also named Return to Oz.

Yes, Return to Oz by Disney is as close to the original books as they could make it. Love that movie too. My most favorite movie of all time..
    some fun facts..
-This is the first movie ever to have ‘color’
-The people who played the munchkins were BANANAS.. most of them had never seen someone who looked like them.. they were hammered all the time & there were std outbreaks.. it’s stuff of Hollywood legend..
    - They fed Judy Garland, Dorothy, uppers all day so she could work insane hours & to keep her skinny, then drugged her so she could sleep.. Judy Garland ended up quite addicted for the majority of her life..
    -Original tin-man had
To be replaced because he got lead poisoning from the paint..
    - The wicked witch got seriously burned during her entrance *or exit, I forget* to munchkin land
    - There is a deleted scene where the WW sends a ‘jitterbug’ ahead of the flying monkeys.. it bites them & they dance the jitter-bug until they fall down & the flying monkeys come & take them..
    - If you some enough weed, or eat a bit of mushrooms, it is possible to sync the movie to Pink Floyd’s Dark Side Of The Moon album & have it COMPLETELY work..

This was NOT the first to have color but certainly rare (and expensive) at the time. Gone With The Wind, released the same year, is in color. A technicolor camera splits the incoming light into its component colors - black, yellow, cyan, and magneta. Each beam is recorded on its own film and then the four are glued together.
Technicolor cameras therefore needed 4x the light to get the same exposure as a b&w film. The studio had to borrow just about every arc light around, which is why the set was so blazing hot.

    1. If you start playing side one of the album "Dark Side of the Moon" by Pink Floyd when the MGM lion roars the third time it syncs up with what's happening
in the movie until shortly after the color kicks in.
    2. Buddy Ebsen was supposed to play the tin man, but he was allergic to the dust they used on his face, so since he was under a lifetime contract with MGM they offered him "The Beverly Hillbillies" and the rest is history.
    3. Sadly, Judy Garland died in 1969 from barbiturate overdose.😇
    4. GOOF: The Nebraska State Fair has always been in Lincoln, not Omaha. (Nebraskan here)
    5. In 1979 they made "The Wiz" featuring Diana Ross and Michael Jackson among others.
    6. If you want to know about the hanging body the story is in IMDB trivia. It's reliable.
    7. Speaking of Pink Floyd and this movie before the times, but how much acid was used to come up with this?

In the book Glynda the good witch of the south (the one she met in munchkinland) and the good witch of the north (who told her she could always go back) were two separate characters, so it wasn't a lie but rather two people with different information.
Also in the book it wasn't a dream, and Dorothy returns in a LOT of sequels.

On one of the overpasses someone spray painted Surrender Dorothy, because of the resemblance. You can look up pics online, if you want. Also, I'm pretty sure this is the first colorized movie. And the Tin Man, Cowardly Lion and the Scarecrow are the farm hands in the beginning of the film. If you listen to their banter in the beginning of the movie before the tornado, you can hear them mention things that end up happening when they're the creatures. The actual Wizard of Oz/the guy in green is the guy who read Dorothy's future in the crystal ball in the beginning as well. The witch is also the lady on the bike who tried to take Toto.

"What is she like, 12"? Yeah, she's like 8 years old in the books, and 12 in the movie.

Lemme hit this bowl to watch the vid bro haha this movie is amazing though. Actress who plays Dorothy went through hell when filming this. A ton of the cast did actually. Sad cause they made such a great movie.

It's been a hilarious time watching you react to this movie! When I was a kid, this movie aired once a year on network TV, and it was a family event for me and my siblings. I can only imagine what it would be like to watch it for the first time with the "firefighter." 😂
PS. I subscribed yesterday after watching your reaction to "The Exorcist". I saw that one in the theater when I was 8 years old. 😳 Watching your reactions to "GamofOf Thrones" now!! 😊
