hey, since you said you didn’t know much about monitors i’ll give you a few ideas to put you in the right path.
smoothness and motion clarity are two different things. you could have 1000hz and it still look blurry or unclear at fast movement. for motion clarity, it depends on the type of panel it is, less than hour many hz it has. as you’ve discovered, TN and IPS are two different things. above that, OLED is a beast in its own. if you’re not using an OLED monitor, you need something like DyAc or ULMB 2 to counteract the motion blur of very fast moving pixels on the screen, which uses methods like backlight strobing.
to make an exaggeration, you could say that 60hz oled may be better than a 165hz tn/ips monitor. a regular CRT would also feel “smoother” than any of these high end ips/tn monitors. the current highest oled monitor for sale is 240hz oled, which would be better than the 540hz tn or 390hz ips, which is also what cookiezi uses. if you want to buy a new monitor, i highly recommend waiting for the 480hz oled monitor coming out in august(?), and if you want to visually what i described above with how they actually improve gameplay then i recommend watching optimum’s videos on monitors where he gives demonstrations.

If you think about it in terms of how "often" the screen updates, the difference is less than 1ms. A 390hz monitor updates every ~2,56ms, a 540hz monitor will update every ~1,85ms, a difference of 0,71ms. Between 60hz and 144hz it's a difference of ~9,7ms. Between 144hz and 240hz it's a difference of ~2,7ms. And you can see as we're going up in refresh rates, even if we're going up "more" hz, the difference is smaller and smaller.
This is a lot of me just saying hz and ms, but what I'm trying to say is that monitor refresh rates are a great representation of diminishing returns. The further we push it, the less we gain from it. This is why people keep raving about 144hz and 240hz genereally. Between 60 and 144 it's a significant upgrade. Between 144hz and 240hz it's a definite upgrade but it's less noticeable.
I've used 60-, 144-, 165- and 240hz monitors and I do feel the difference, but the only reason I would get anything over 144/165 is if you're also gaining something else from the new monitor, or the cost isn't too much higher in comparison. For me that was a bigger screen, better colors and better contrast, which will most likely all affect your general experience far more than the refresh rate difference.
yeah rtings said that anything above 360 Hz is kinda pointless. For a pleb like me, 240 Hz seems like the sweet spot. Also, he should have mentioned if he used ulmb 2 and overdrive

@@simonmattsson527 yeah shure, you can feel the higher smoothness but you have to play the right games to feel it. Osu isn't one of them. When you play CS, Overwatch or Valorant you can get a benefit out of 540Hz but i also think they are absolutly pointless and a waste of money, even for the highest skilled players in the world. When you really want high refresh rate gaming wait for the 480Hz Oleds. They will come out later this year and have way better colors and with 480Hz you are in the range of 600-700Hz TN in motion clarity. With Oled you also have the benefit that you can play AAA games with HDR and don't have the change the monitorsettings to get a good picture without tons of overshoot.
As a guy, who used 60, 75, 144, 240 and now 360Hz monitors I can say: there is truth about it. There is a big difference between 60 and 75, even bigger between 60 or 75 and 144Hz, there is some noticable difference between 144 and 240Hz, AND there is difference between 240 and 360Hz, but I had 240Hz 4ms monitor, and now 360Hz 1ms monitor, so probably it also really depends on how fast the screen updates in ms, it would be much of a difference between 240Hz 1 ms and 360Hz 1ms I guess, and mentioning this, OLED monitors are the most fast among the others, but they are REALLY expensive

there's a 27" 1440p 480 Hz OLED coming by LG if you're interested, nearly as high of a refresh as this one, but much tighter timings, per pixel light control and ~perfect colors (in SDR). from what i can tell it would be higher resolution and size than you're used to though. and of course, OLED has annoyances too.
I know there's memes about the "The eye can only see 24 fps" stuff, but I believe we are actually reaching a limit here. They did a test with fighter pilots (which have very good reaction speed of course) by putting a dot on a single frame and asking the pilots to identify it at different framerates. The pilots were able to on average see the dot up until the 500 fps mark, after that the dot wasn't even noticeable anymore. I feel like with that in mind, once we've reached the 500 fps/500 hz mark, it's time to up the resolution if we have leftover performance.
As far as feeling worse at lower AR maps, I get why that's happening. I was a professional drummer for like 10 years and when I tried to play the Rock Band drums on anything less than AT LEAST medium (hard for some of the simpler songs), it actually threw me off because I felt like I wasn't playing ENOUGH.
The best part about all these tech videos, my laptop still views the video as it would be an ordinary osu play.
you wouldn't see a difference even with the same monitor as him watching the video because youtube videos only go up to 60fps
Definitely curious how a 390hz ips panel and 390hz oled panel would compare in responsiveness. It *should* be better but I don't know.
yeah, 390 is already a bit too much for average response time of IPS panels.
It's not as much response times that would be a big deal as much as clarity and sharpness. OLED doesn't suffer from ghosting like LCDs. The benefits of input lag will likely be indistinguishable to everyone. We're talking the difference in input lag of 2-3ms vs 5-8ms. There's very few people who'd notice that when most computers have 5-10 times that lag without even including the screen.
IPS prolly not, but oled might be different due to having basically 0 pixel response delay

I have a 240Hz screen, I can sightread up to AR 9.4+DT, but I swear when Im not home and playing on a 75Hz screen, I play WAY better at every NM maps, I think there really is something about high refresh rate and AR
i feel like switching from a va/ips/tn panel monitor to a oled panel monitor and getting that 0.1ms pixel response time and the image clarity that comes with it that you can't get on anything besides an oled would be better for osu compared to going from a 240 hz refresh rate monitor to a 360+ hz refresh rate monitor. but idk i never tried any monitor above 240hz refresh rate.
Using a TN panel in 2024 is a crime considering the PG27AQDP is around the corner. 480Hz OLED which destroys both TN in latency/input lag and IPS in image quality. Is a no brainer, I would even say that a 480hz oled is beyond a 600+hz regular TN/IPS panel just because of the response times of oled.
That thing of it depends on the game is true Fortnite I was stuck at 40 FPS and didn’t realize for a very long time games like geometry dash I can more easily tell and sometimes immediately if it is not 144+ FPS and even FPS which are higher than my display refresh rate I can still sorta feel until 240 which is the max update cycle of the game currently and Minecraft I mean I can tell but it doesn’t bother me as long as it isn’t below 24 so it really depends on the game you are right

60hz isn't really much of a problem until you go into higher refresh rates. I'd say 120-144 from 60hz is the biggest difference and the next step is 240hz, anything after 240hz-300hz and higher you will barely be able to tell and it practically won't make any difference. 60 to 120+ though will impact your skill for sure though, but don't expect much, it's just a way nicer experience.

Playing Project DIVA on my 360Hz laptop monitor (or even my 175Hz OLED) is already an experience. Can only imagine the CPU + GPU combo I'd need for a locked 540FPS. Best way I can explain it is that the notes fly on the screen in a cleaner fashion and you have a wider time window to hit notes if your reflexes are twitchy. I'd imagine it wouldn't be a big issue for Osu! though because the game is really lightweight to run.
I think you forgot to mention ULMB 2 on the monitor. If you dont use it, the monitor is basically wasted. Been using ULMB 2 on my PG27AQN (27" 1440p 360Hz dual voltage IPS) from my XG248Q (24" 1080p 240Hz TN) which was slow for TN, upgraded to the worlds fastest IPS and is one of the best investments I did, then again I play Geometry Dash, cant exactly tell much on osu! Since there is a ton of motion which is great for ULMB 2 (Backlight strobing optimized for nvidia afaik)
The frametime of your 390Hz monitor is 2.564 ms and the 540Hz is 1.851 ms. You're saving less than three quarters of a millisecond per frame at this point.
In comparison, your upgrade from 240Hz (4.166 ms) to 390Hz was a bit over 1.6 ms.
Assuming there's also diminishing returns in human perception as well as the math, you're approaching some real unnoticeable differences.
Edit: Changed formatting and wording. Also while thinking more about this today, I realised I have probably never seen a millisecond timer that showed every number, since monitors don't go that fast. Neat.

Assuming the exact same display technologies are being used, you get diminishing visual improvements the higher the refresh rate. I personally would wait like 5 or so years until extreme refresh rates on OLED are much better and cheaper before I'd buy.
If you were a pro on 60hz and transitioned to a 540hz monitor it'd feel way more better
If you think IPS has good colors and contrast. You should try OLED 🙂

I think knowing that you have a 540hz monitor for osu just gives you a confidence boost, so any perceived skill boost is probably just placebo
The thing is, 390 to 540hz is a very small difference. Framerate isn't a linear measurement, so the actual difference between 390 and 540hz is less than 1ms. It won't make much of a difference in actual responsiveness and frame timing
I'll say it as many times as I can. 1000hz hardware is the future. It might be unrealistic by todays's standards but it's a fact. We feel it in keyboards, we feel it in mouses... we will feel it in monitors because it will look like there's no latency and when you move the cursor it won't leave a trace or windows will be fully visible when moving them or scrolling through webpages.
If we get motion sickness with VR is for a reason guys, and don't be the guy who says we see 60hz because it's not true. Games like osu! run at more than a 1000hz with a good PC so if it ever exists, I'd say it's a great buy even if the rest of the games run at 300 for example, you WILL feel it outside of the gaming world.
You should try a high refresh rate OLED monitor, since they have even faster response
There is a very different response time difference from 390hz to 540hz, the time it takes for you to make an input to the time your pc actually reads and knows that input is very fast between the two, but the 540hz is surprisingly a bigger difference in response time then you think. The time it takes for you to make an input to it being registered is a lot lower which can for sure improve your gameplay for sure.
As you continue to rise in refresh rate, the time between monitor updates decreases, however it is not linear, the jump from 60hz to 120hz is larger than the jump from 120hz to 180hz, and the jump from 180hz to 240hz is even smaller as you continue up into these crazy high refresh rates. This is most likely why you didn’t feel much difference going from 390hz to 540hz, because the gap in the pixel update time is so small at that refresh rate
When I switched from 60hz to 165hz my gameplay was worse for a couples of days, i needed to get used to the different colours, even if my previous monitor was much worse than the new (that's what I think the reason was). I think this might have been the case for you too, as no mod was for smoother after the firsts days
remember, when he says "i can barely see the difference" he talks about the difference bettweeb 390hz and 540hz, not 60hz and 540hz
I think your problem might come down to ghosting, which is the blur behind moving objects. Some higher refresh rate monitors have more ghosting than lower hz monitors.

I think you'd notice a difference in lazer, osu stable doesn't buffer the notes quick enough for you to notice a difference in those highs of framerates I believe.
You have to try the 480hz oled coming later this year! Oled colors and contrast with the smoothest motion / clearity duo to instant pixel response time :D
The refresh rate are so smooth it feels like when you play nomod ar 9 like see airplane on the sky you might want to took some times to get used to this high end hz monitor.
I didn't watch the video the whole way through but if there was an improvement it was just placebo. There is literally no noticeable difference between a 390 and a 540hz monitor and the input delay+visual difference is so minor that there is no possible way it can help you get better at any game and especially osu. Since osu is relatively simple with the only motion going on the screen being the circles that appear it's pretty hard to notice differences between refresh rates especially as high as that he was using. For example, I'm using a 144hz monitor and when switching to 60hz in games it feels super laggy but when I do it in osu it still feels playable and smooth since there isn't a lot of action going on. Anyways, don't waste your money on these "extreme" monitors since their refresh rates is just something they use to make you buy them, anything above 240hz is not noticeable at all
I bet the reason that other UA-camr was describing it as looking through a window while you didn't feel much of a difference was that he was using a mouse with a high polling rate, and most osu players use a tablet. I bet you would feel a difference if you had a tablet with a high polling rate, and I bet the first tablet manufacturer to make a 1000hz tablet will get rich! I don't even use a tablet, but I still hope they make faster tablets cuz right now their polling rates are garbage.

Different panel can also have different amounts of ghosting from the previous frame(s).
I agree on the lower ar being kinda difficult at first when switching to a higher refresh rate my cursor felt like it was slipping when I switched to 240hz from 60hz
I think what you're asking for here is an oled monitor which blows the colours of both tn and ips monitors out of the water including incredible contrast maybe try one of those instead idk if they do 360hz ones but they might

i'm a 6 digit so i don't really got any skill on osu, but i play with 768p 60hz tn monitor and a 100gr mouse since i've started playing osu, so when i upgrade to a 1080p 100hz ips monitor and a 58gr mouse, i play worse LOL. i feel like i'm back to my 7 digit days when i'm 260K now

I doubt someone who would buy a $900 monitor has a "bad" pc but there could be some sort of fps cap or osu isn't consistently getting up to that 540 fps so the "difference isn't that noticeable" because there isn't any

For me osu has no difference in any refresh rates. I have a 144hz monitor and when I switch to 60 everything feels laggy and slow but osu feels completely fine and I can still do anything I could with 144hz. I'm not the best person to say that since the plays I do are 4-5 stars but still compared to other games like rocket league the change doesn't feel as bad.
If you're getting this to click white circles on black background the color accuracy doesn't matter also if you have $900 to spare for that you probably have multiple monitor setup anyways

for FPS games i can tell from personal experience 60hz > 144hz = wow > 240hz = wow > 360hz=meh , maybe this 540hz will feel alot better,but im not buying it :D
and overall those big refresh rate jumps really only the 0.1% competetive players notice , because they are already at thier peak and look for everything they can squeeze from hardware upgrade or whatever

It's really not worth it to upgrade unless you gain more than 50% refresh rate or close to double even and don't sacrifice color for it.
What this video demonstrates is what not to do because it's downgrading color to gain like what 38% more refresh rate and a waste of money.
