This is not a "how-to" or full review of Gloomhaven for hard-core board gamers. Rather, this tries to lay out the aspects of the game that might be unusual for occasional board gamers, and help you determine whether you personally are likely to enjoy it or not.

Excellent analysis! Good, minimally biased approach. You succinctly summarized somethings I had vague in my head.

Thanks man. I got the game to play with my 3 sons, and knowing that it's clunky and slower to begin with helps me, as I can prepare them for that so they don't get disheartened. Kudos to you!

Great review. Keep it up. Maybe when Frosthaven comes out you can review that as well. Cheers!

Yes, already been playing in the tabletop simulator they put out, looking forward to trying it IRL

You know what would be great? In conjunction with this video, it would be great if you did a beginner walkthrough of a scenario...a made up would be fine. But I believe the way you layout the game and explain is brilliant. And, with Frosthaven in the way, I think there will be a whole new crop of Gloomhaven players...and your videos would and will be a great benefit. Cheers!

You should see if you can get this posted to the Gloomhaven sub-Reddit. You covered a lot of questions that are routinely asked there by people who are thinking about buying the game.

Appreciate the suggestion and great idea if that's where people are looking. Is there a specific place you would suggest? (not super familiar with Reddit structure, do I need permission to post there?)

@@filmprofmark it depends on if they view it as a resource or as self-promotion. This would be somewhat of both. Less so promotion as you don't sell for nor work for any of the organizer companies, right?

That's correct, I have no financial connection with any of the companies. Just created this and the organizer video as a resource since I love the game and am something of an evangelist for it.

@@filmprofmark right, so on that basis, they should have zero issue with you posting your work. That is my opinion anyhow. If they give any trouble, I could probably get it posted for you, but it seems like a better idea for you to get 100% of the attention for it (like if someone else posts the link, they would get "credit" for finding it).

I don't see how a "casual" gamer could ever get into this...set up, storage, cost. Learning curve.

Fair enough; I think it depends how you define "casual." What I noticed looking at GH reviews was they were virtually all geared toward hard-core "I have a gaming group that meets 3 times a week and we've played every obscure board game ever made" types. Half the reviews I couldn't even understand because they compared aspects of it to a bunch of games I've never even heard of.
I quite enjoy board games but never played regularly (maybe once every couple months a game with the fam?"), and largely stuck to the mainstream big name games (being an early Settlers of Catan player was about as far out-of-the-box as I got, and of course that eventually became huge). So in that sense I would consider myself a "casual" gamer historically; this is the first game that's made me actually find a group to meet with.
I guess the corollary for me would be I know people who are avid video gamers who play frequently, for long periods, and try a lot of different games. I also know those who might have one or two video games they play a LOT but would consider themselves "casual" gamers because they don't know much about the broader video game scene, don't keep up with new games coming out or play a lot of different games.
So one point I tried to make is that this game CAN be enjoyable even for those who are not true hard-core board gamers already... BUT that it's NOT a good fit for you as something to break out for a single game once every six months, it does sort of require more regular play to enjoy. Thus a lot of the review was trying to give a sense of what the game was like and whether someone might enjoy it, to help them gauge whether it's worth the risk of investing in it for them as something they could get into and play regularly.
Whether that was successful or not I leave to the internet to decide... but for a very small sample size, in my current group are a couple people who are fairly avid board gamers and a couple who are not and really Gloomhaven is the first time they've ever gotten into a game and played it regularly like that.

I would consider myself a hardcore gamer, 250+ boardgames, 500+ videogames, endless mindgames. I play Gloomhaven casually, though, so this video should speak to me. Actually, I am just getting started, with Gloomhaven, amd I will likely end up playing it solo more than in a group. Are you excited about FrostHaven?

Looking forward to Frosthaven though still have a ways to go on the original so not like I'm in any hurry for it to come out
