I purchased an SACD from Paul…. I don’t spend big money on streaming.. Modded Oppo CD is it … The quality of the SACD is off the charts.. I wish other popular musicians spent more time on quality like Octive records…
Streaming reminds me too much of FM. I like it around Christmas time mostly, where you can hear Ray Conniff (And The Singers) for way over an hour without getting up. With what streaming equip. I use, it never sounds terribly present. Ray, or The Singers. That's their name.
A lot of younger people don't care about sound quality. It's more about convenience. They use their phones for music whether it be headphones (earbuds), Bluetooth speaker, in their car it doesn't matter, or even a home system (which is usually on the low-end) streaming is fine. CD's have always had superior sound especially if you're listening through a mid to high-end system. It sounds fine to Adele because it sells. 🤷
Paul, it is so interesting. A great many years ago i was returning form a agriculture field day in Northern New Brunswick, Canada, and was listening to a CBC radio broadcast where Jann Arden was presenting Adele. My wife phoned me, wanted some dog food, so I stopped in Moncton to purchase. As I walked down the aisle in the store, here was the Adele cd on sale. Purchased it and enjoyed all the way home. But sadly, when I played it on my home stereo I listened to, maybe 3 songs and moved on - it was horrible. The next Christmas, an audio friend arrived and had brought along the same cd ( we always enjoy sharing some music experiences at our get togethers). I looked at him and said, "I see you brought out the Adele cd, and am guessing that you are wondering if it is your system or the recording. Well, it is the poor engineering process with the recording" . Our comment was the same - why would a musician/ vocalist of Adele's callibre accept such poor fodder? She need to take a few lessons from Frank Sinatra!!!!
In a time of much faster Internet and petabyte hard drives, I wish ALL lossy formats can disappear. Mp3 in terms of music and JPG in terms of photos. On another tangent, some people use Facebook as a means to store their photos but Facebook’s picture resolution is horrible! Sad people have to do that.
Hi Paul. Amazon also has a HD version of their music service. Their HD quality ranges from 44/16 to at least 192/24. You can also see the HD quality of each song that is playing and what your device is playing it at.
Amazon's high-res streams are processed differently than Tidal. Same song, same system, the two presentations are definitely different. It's difficult to explain, easy to hear... I suspect that it's to do with Tidal using MQA and Amazon just compressing the file with FLAC, but I don't know for sure.
Would you recommend Tidal’s “Master version” (which they have some controversy about) or their Hi-Fi Version (which is the CD equivalent Version 44100hz) ?
If you have access to online payment methods I would recomend running the Trial for Tidal Hifi+(Remember to set a reminder on your calander one week from now just in case you forget to unsub if you dont like it) then decide for yourself if what they do to the music is a good or bad thing. If you already have roon apperently thier player lets tidal provide garbage in garbage out instead of the stock web player/app but that costs quite abit and Im not willing to invest in features I dont use. Personally I went back to Deezer after a couple of days but pls do give Tidal a honest try.
I switched to Qobuz from Tidal, the audio quality is better but the catalog is not as large and Tidal does have a larger range of master quality recordings too. Also unfortunately they do not send you an email with your subscription payment each month so it is easy to forget you have it if you stop using it.
@@nigelrhodes4330 Isnt that the case with all streaming/insurance. They take a small enough amount every month that you dont notice and rely on folks that have moved on but forgot to unsub. That being said I kind of want to try Qobuz but unfortunately Im stuck with deezer as Qobuz isnt available in my country. :(
The terminology really needs to be adjusted to reflect reality. Digital audio doesn’t have a resolution. It would be nice if people stopped referring to bit depths and sampling rates as “standard resolution” and “high resolution” since the terms don’t apply.
i realise i'm going to sound a bit condesending saying this but i think you'd sell more music if you covered a wider range of styles, having just spent a while listing to tracks on the website it all feels very samey, the sound quality is great though. or its just not to my taste
@@lollol7688 i'd like to hear some music in this kind of high quality, artists like Air, Daft punk, Enya, Goldfrapp, the orb, pink floyd, the prodigy, (anything 80s synth pop) delerium, ian neal, vangelis, lichtmond, chungking, royksopp, tesla boy, carpenter brut, gunship, magicsword, powerglove, (all synthwave really) not much jazzy folky acoustic music speaks to me

Paul, I would like to hear your thoughts on music streamed from one's own media server. I use PLEX as my media streamer and use exclusively FLAC uncompressed files. Most are 16/44 format ripped from CDs, but some are 24/96 format downloaded from on-line sources. I stream them to three different stereo setups in my home, and also to my iPad. A fair amount of the music files are rock oldies from the mid 60s into the early 80s, so I don't expect playback on ANY equipment to overcome the limitations of the original recordings. But the majority is orchestral music that was well-recorded (Telarc, for example). I am not interested in streaming Spotify, as I have everything I want on my own PLEX system. Paul, your thoughts, please. Assuming my hardware is adequate, am I getting an acceptable sound quality?
Several things to add.... Apple's iTunes and the ACC format transcoding adds a low end boost. Additionally playing anything on a Apple device will add boost. It's part of the operating system. Unless you are using a professional audio or DJ program to play it, their low eq will change the balance of the audio. 2nd... The difference between 192k/16b compression to 44.1/16b is noticeable. The difference between 192k/24b, 32b or 64b is even greater. However, most people do not have a audio system that the differences are audible. Lastly.. Studio mastering has changed with the streaming generation. Difference mastering techniques and levels will result in different sounding audio.
"However, most people do not have a audio system that the differences are audible." This is the point for a lot of audio arguments, even though listening to music is easier than ever most people will never experience true hifi audio.
Apple Music Dolby Atmos albums are 👍 even with Just headphones. Especially with classical music.👍 I use my iPhone with the power/ headphone jack dongle. 👍 you have to set everything up in the iPhone settings 👍
Quantity plus profits, the business model since Ancient Times. Streaming services are kind of like a tourist trap. People love to go. Then complain about the crowds..😀
Why on earth do people think that higher resolution sounds better? High resolution may let not so good gear sound less worse, but if an audio system is of quality, it will sound much better on CD quality then other systems on HiRes. If an audio device needs complicated solutions, it's no good.
Out of all the streamers I like Apple Music by far the most. I was not impressed with Tidal after many years of hearing warbled versions of some of my favourite and treasured classical recordings. No care given to archiving non popular/non mainstream genres and I complained many times to Tidal about it. I can perfectly replicated the same audio problems year after year if I take their free subscription.

Got a feeling of deja vu with this one 😅

I fully agree we need that magical sound back we all remember from the earlier days
Quobuz - Small Green computer - Ultra Rendu - Stellar Gain DAC = Great sound & enjoyment !!!!
Why have I already seen every video uploaded lately?!
Because, like many of us, these topics matter to you.
Definitely a repost. I commented on the previous one that Adele should *not* bring her producer if she wanted good quality.

I don't think they're writing any more letters to Paul isn't this the third repeat lol
Are you still alive Paul???
Or maybe Paul has Alzheimer's and is reuploading videos that he thinks are new 🤣
The first one would have been Octave Records. How hard could it be to publish both on the same day or something?
This video was already posted two weeks ago
I'd love to hear some recordings you've done!
