Gayathri manthram is coined from Sri valmiki ramayanam. This I came to know from one of my friends who is no more now. Though I am not conversant with the twenty-four thousand stanzas of Sri valmiki ramayanam I came to know from my friend that from every thousand slokam from ramayanam one word was taken to coin the king of manthras the Gayathri manthram. I do not know whether this is a fact.

He was a shatriya as per Ramayana. Kaushika was granted Raja rishi and then Rishi which made him into brahmin ranks. Please check LIFCO edition of Valmiki ramayana.
