      "...and it really hurts me..."
      That is the problem tho, the whole unironic "triggered" stance is that someone's very specific life experiences work as a crutch for them to stand on, i.e i cant make fun of you because x happened to you, the "triggered" meme is a satire of that, your life experiences dont justify your political positions and you can have a stupid view of, say, pedophilia despite having suffered from it, look up milo yiannopoulo's comments about pedophilia to get what i mean

      @@wilsonsilva2918 I am aware that people use the word "triggered" as a joke and I have a problem with it. For example, if I do LITERALLY get triggered by something (which, btw, is not fun at all) and I tell someone that I just got triggered that would mean that I need help from them, I'm probably getting a panic attack. But because people use the word as a joke people will take me less seriously when I literally say I've been triggered and may even laugh because they've gotten used to seeing that word only in the context of jokes.

    It's kind of annoying that even the left uses the "triggered" derogatorily some times too. I get it's supposed to counter the "snowflake" claims they make about the left, but its setting a bad standard to enable using the word that way.

    I think we may need a proper discussion on anarchist tactics on the usage of marketplace of ideas in order to sell left wing channels without necessarily trading that attention for capital, except for when doing so leads to desirable results I.E Way more attention OR way more capital to be used to boost your ability to gain attention (I.E spending your patreon money on better editing software, better equipment OR promote other channels with similar goals)

    • @ElectricUnicycleCrew
      @ElectricUnicycleCrew 5 років тому +1

      I'd say that triggered describes the experience of going through something traumatic. When it comes to AS I feel that a meltdown is just an emotional response to something that's happening that has made you feel like you are losing control. Traumatic experiences typically involve a numbing out of emotions. That is just my opinion though, someone else might think something different.

    One thing I have noticed is that following the right-wing's resurgence in mainstream culture, words like triggered and SJW have entered the popular lexicon. Interestingly, not in the manner the right intended. SJW does not really mean feminist anymore but more politically-motivated killjoy, like an eco-warrior. Triggered as well has become a word young people use for annoyed or irritated, which I find much less offensive than the derisive usage from the right and the disingenuous usage from others on the left, but still I think people should always try and expand their vocabulary regularly so they aren't only using words they have just picked up because this is, above all else, good for themselves.

    Exposure therapy may work for phobias and certain types of trauma (like accidents and natural disasters) but Bessel an Der Kolk (the Body Keeps the Score a classic PTSD text) argues repeated to triggers is not effective for people in post-traumatic stress.
    Avoidance and stagnation is not, therefore, the answer. Treatment of PTSD is individual, and must be tailored as such. I don't like the language of "getting over it" so much because it still plays into the idea that your conscious mind has control over what your psyche is traumatized by. This notion of control is what grounds people's overall derisive attitude towards 'triggered liberals'.
    That said, I appreciate this video's clarity and plainness, and think this needed to be said in just this way to get its message across. --cheers!

    Triggered is definitely a useful shorthand for a trauma instigating incident. However i believe that, like with other words, we must simply bite the bullet here and casually and repeatedly and sometimes insistently inform others that, "No, I mean that literally, please respect my preference." Getting everyone to use a word a certain way is a waste of effort, costing more than the benefit.

    I doubt people who make fun of the term lack any empathy for people who have gone through a traumatic event. It's just that the term has become intimately linked with the "controlling speech" movement, and emits a negative response. Which makes sense, because anything can trigger people (seemingly small things can put me out of commision for days), so it's important to fight back against anything that can lead us down a "legaslative" path when dealing with something so subjective.

    I think the meaning of the word depends on several factors such as the context of communication and probably the tone of the speaker saying the word. While I agree that misusing the word may invalidate the feelings of the people who are really suffering from a trauma, it is also important to note that we can not simply assign restrictive rules on a word because language by nature is in constant flux. Different variations of the word mean different things. Words can also have different connotations that we can not simply control.
    I guess what I'm trying to say is that it is better to conclude that we need to be sensitive of our surroundings and know what and what not to say at a given moment, which would not necessitate not using the word completely. It's about responsibility.

      You use the thing that the right likes to reference over and over again: Science. You could link them to a scientific study which shows that people who have suffered some kind of trauma in the past can be plunged into a negative mental state if they are reminded of that traumatic event, and that their misuse of the term is making people with mental health problems afraid to use it in case people laugh at them. Then again, they might just respond back with "tHiS iS jUsT pUtTiNg FeElInGs OvEr FaCtS lIbTaRd LoL gEt ReKt!!!!!1!!!!1!!11!!!1".

    I'm not sure I agree with this. There's been many things in my past that "trigger" me, I suppose. Or better yet, I've gone through things that I don't like thinking back on. A few things just put me in a certain mood, things I'll never be able to get over and just ignore. They happened and it's never going to go away.
    But people making jokes about these subjects, I don't mind that. There's a few things people can easily make a joke about. But that doesn't mean they're talking light about the subject or that these issues are now trivial. I can't agree with that idea.
    I have Turkish friends and my "darkest" joke is about them refusing to admit to the genocide of Armenian people. Is it particularly funny? Not really, it's only funny because it hits so hard on their political situation and beliefs. But after the joke has been made, there's no reason for any of us to have any bad feelings about each other. Same way I don't mind the jokes that relate to me.
    Yes I struggle with some of these things, but a joke at the end of the day is still a joke. I think the intent of a joke is what matters most.
    A friend of mine makes jokes about domestic violence all the time, but that doesn't mean I'm going to be upset that my dad used to hit me. He isn't saying it to make it seem like my father hitting me was some trivial thing that happened or that my pain isn't real.

    I don’t know if the right is necessarily to blame for the excessive misuse of the word “triggered” when the left used it as a serious term to begin with to describe being offended in a discussion, but I agree with the points overall.

  • @GregwilsonAzureSecurity

  • @nsansa7552
    @nsansa7552 5 років тому

    Yes, but the responsibility to remove the trigger rests on the triggered in most cases. In other words, it shouldn't be used to censor others in most cases. To use the football example, if you went to a football stadium and asked them to remove all the football's so you can feel better, that isn't OK. You can not go to the stadium. Now if people are coming to your flat and throwing footballs in, that is another story.
    I also agree the misappropriation of the term for simple offense does the most damage to it.

    • @pogogo51
      @pogogo51 5 років тому +1

      The football stadium in this situation is a trigger warning, the person knows there are footballs in it. If they're just getting coffee and the barista throws a football at them, that kinda sucks, yea? It might not be the barista's fault, they didn't know, that's why the affected would then tell the barista what the trigger was, and everyone would come away knowledgeable and not accidentally hurting each other. It's not censorship, it's empathy.

    I think most people have no problem with a person with real ptsd or other real issues dealing with trauma. The mentally healthy person that is using triggered bc they are offended or worse, just virtue signaling is the type of person(s) that the others using the word triggered are targeting.
    Most people dealing with real trauma are usually not bothered by the person(s) trolling the faker bc the real trauma survivors are aware that the pretender needs to be called out bc the poser(s) are the ones that ACTUALLY hurt the real trauma survivors and their causes.
    It would be great if everyone would listen to rational discussion. However, sometimes you have to show someone how ridiculous they look before they get it.

      So y'all are saying that all these people flipping out and claiming to be "triggered" by Pres Trump being elected really have serious trauma over it?
      My fave the white people that are triggered bc they claim some other white person is appropriating some other race's culture bc of hair style or costume?
      The people shouting down others bc they can't handle another's opinion and cries when they don't get their way so they claim that other person nicely expressing a difference of opinion and willing to agree to disagree but since that person won't change their mind the yelling maniac says the other person triggered them.
      That's the shit I'm talking about. I would never tell a rape victim, a victim of any violence, war vet, etc or any other person that claimed to have PTSD and said they have certain triggers, that they were lying or make fun of them. @@frankmorrow4923 So I am immature and childlike just because I don't comply with someone's request? Personally, I am not going to take into account every single disorder and person who can get offended every time I say something. To extend this, I have dealt with PTSD myself from childhood. Now in my late 20's and after years of (EMDR) therapy it basically lessend to a degree where I no longer get 'triggered' during every day life. Honestly, if people with PTSD get offended by people using the word 'triggered', they should stop taking everything in life so serious and personal. Overexaggerating to prove a point happens constantly. People do it all the time. CammehYaBams gave us something to consider and think about, and I decided not to agree with it. Simple as that.

      YourComputerExpert I have ptsd as well, for me its the fact that the word has been stripped of its medical meaning, which is obvious because you're using it in quotations. And the fact its like y'all act like we're trying to rob you of your freedom of speech when its just "please be polite to people" which I don't get why its so hard just to remove a word from your vocabulary.

    • @YourComputerExpert
      @YourComputerExpert 5 років тому

      @@frankmorrow4923 I understand completely that it can feel impolite when people talk about being triggered, while you are *actually* dealing with those problems. However, I don't think most people who use the word 'triggered', actually mean being triggered like someone with PTSD. Triggering someone could just simply mean that you are invoking a response within someone else. I don't think the word should be reserved only when talking about people with PTSD just because their meaning behind the same word is much more serious and impactful to their everyday life. The medical meaning behind it is only important when talking to someone about it within the proper context, like explaining to a loved one how you feel or discussing your problems with a therapist. I doubt it will lose it's meaning within those situations, so personally I feel like it's a bit pointless to fight everyone 'misusing' the word.

      YourComputerExpert it isn't just ptsd, like my OCD has certain triggers, like if I step on a crack on the floor or sidewalk. Phobias have triggers as well, so does depression, schizophrenia, bpd, paranoia, and a whole shitload of other mental disorders. Even things that aren't necessary mental disorders such as gender dysphoria have triggers, but the problem arises when (mainly those on the right) mock the strawman of anyone who says "i'm triggered" or "that can be a trigger"
