- This is an educational video that features several prominent Americans that most people assumed were white, however, they were actually black. This video will provide facts, insights and my opinions on these historically important Americans and the times in which they lived. Lastly, I will show how the past ties into the present.

I had a coworker who was an identical twin. Her twin lived in another state and was passing but my coworker didn't. That was really something I had never heard of before. This was in the 1970's. So it wasn't too long ago. Thanks for the video. Now I know what she meant.
Thank you for your comments. But I fear based on many comments on this video, I didn’t drive home that these photos are not legitimate. I used the photos so I could compared them with the descriptions of these individuals. My objective was to show the contradictions. If you watch my later videos, that should be more clear. However, I’m not saying there weren’t thousands of people passing for white. I read a scholarly paper several years ago that asserted more than 30 thousand Americans pass into whiteness every year.

Hazel eyes, very pale complexion and long straight brunette hair. So it can go both ways. Very interesting subject. My baby brother's father was white he is very pale but he has brown curly hair. Since we have Cherokee Indian on my mom's side of the family that's what they told us about him. However my dad before he died called me and told me the truth, my mom had stepped out on him once, but he loved my baby brother as his own. So long story short, people passed for certain reasons I imagine. Maybe one day that won't be the case.

Identical twins have the same skin, eye and hair color. The only variations can be sight differences of height and weight. Fraternal twins can have completely different skin, eye and hair color as well as much different heights and weights. Your coworker didn't understand the medical definitions of identical and fraternal.

They put this stuff in plain site, changed the pictures of our people replacing with white photos how stupid not to change the descriptions in the text. Swarthy meant “weathered”. Sailors were swarthy, farmers were swarthy, Heathcliff was swarthy, and I did often wonder if Heathcliff was meant to be obviously mixed. It’s also not hard to believe Americans are hysterical on the subject of complexion.

The definition of swarthy gives us: of a dark color, complexion, or cast. Not ‘black’ per se.
Dark and Black are the same.
What's more concerning is that even though Woodrow Wilson did this *no one made a move to undo it.* All illegal and inhumane acts and laws put on the books in America just never seems to be undone even when people "disagree with it" or call it "unjust."

Daniel Webster was alive after the invention of photography and we have actual photos of him, and he is White as can be. Having a dark complexion does not make one Black.
In fact, it is that very error, equating dark skin with Black ancestry, that leads to the false argument that many Confederate soldiers were actually Black. At best, a handful of Blacks served in the actual Confederate Armies. Yet, if you read many primary sources, there are eyewitness accounts that describe 25%+ of the Confederates being Black. But that is because many White southerners were very dark compared to what some Union soldiers were accustomed.
No, people are not HIDING the actual pictures of Daniel Webster. Those are his pictures, and simply making the claim, "Well, they don't match the written records I have, so they have to be fake" is beyond ridiculous.
The entire video is simply, I think obvious White people are Black, and somehow that his been hidden from history.
There are so many actual Black Americans that do not get the appreciation they deserve, who should be talked about in history books, because their contributions were real, as opposed to trying to make obvious White people Black.
For example, the volley that started the American Revolution at Lexington on on April 19, 1775, when the British regulars fired on 77 members of the Militia, one of those wounded in that volley was Prince Estabrook, a slave, who despite his being in bondage, wanted to join the militia, so not only was his signature required, but his owners as well.
The actual Black Prince Estabrook was one of, if not the first, American wounded in the American Revolution. Prince Estabrook, recovered from his wounds, and went on to fight at Bunker Hill. He died a freeman and collected a military pension for his service.
There are dozens, if not hundreds of such Americans who go unappreciated, so research into them, instead of trying to argue the Paul Revere was actually Black.
American Black history doesn't need actual White people drafted in order to make that Black History robust, it is already robust.
Shine a light on the remarkable accomplishments of actual Black people. Trying to pass off White people as Black is demeaning to Black History.

Yup… Abraham Lincoln had a white skin. We have photos of him. According to Google there’s a photo of his mom and she is very white. Abraham Lincoln did refer to himself as a slave - his father’s slave. Iirc, there’s apparently a lot of info about Lincoln being a massive racist, and his anti-slavery stance was more for political reasons.

Lincoln believed African people were inferior, a lot of people did back then, doesn't mean he hated them outright or thought they should be treated as property. There's several speeches Lincoln made that clearly spell out his beliefs towards African-Americans, and African people in general. People tend to take that quote "If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it", out of context though. He was in the end an abolitionist and didn't believe anyone deserved it.

If there be in it any statements, or assumptions of fact, which I may know to be erroneous, I do not now and here controvert them. As a 73 year old white male, I am pissed as hell, to finding out all this. I thank you for your endeavours to right these egregious evils against history. These great people, who in their lifetimes were suppressed, were for the most part, posthumously, decided to not be acknowledged for who they truly are. To continue to allow this travesty to go on is absurd. Time to get it right in history, or it is not true history at all. God bless you, for enlightening an old man, who has been lied to. I'd recommend a more thorough study on the olive skin tone. It crosses ALL ethnic lines and generally refers to having tan, brown, cream, greenish, yellowish, or golden undertones to whatever color skin you have.

I was fortunate enough to have this as the official textbook for my college history class.
We were made to read this book my senior year of high school for World History. We wrote a report on it. We also read Plato the Republic. Dr. Okan didn't use the suggested textbook and caused us to think outside the box. I'm thankful for it.

You mention Robert Smalls’ efforts re retaining of “white” status for dark complexioned people c. 1890. Smalls, a South Carolina slave, was “loaned out” as a skilled sailor around the time of beginning of the Civil War. He became a hero when he piloted a ship to the Union blockade of Charleston, SC. He literally carried family to freedom and gifted the ship to the Union Navy.
Smalls was clearly respected. He was not of European heritage, but he earned the status of white as defined pre-1900. He clearly hoped his descendants would be treated this way, too.
My sisters and I are all different colours my older sister is white , I’m tan and my baby sister is dark. I got special treatment from people that thought I was white, I never realized how much my younger sister resented me because of my complexion. I have grandchildren that vary in complexion, I won’t stand for it. It is real, it exists 😳
This is the same with my mother and her siblings, who range from white to dark and in between. My mother is fair skinned, but my father is Black. I never sensed any resentment from my aunts and uncles as they were all pretty close. But as a child with my cousins, I noticed a difference. My complexion is light tan, as were my cousins with a few a bit lighter. But they had emerald green or hazel eyes and what has sadly been termed “good hair” in Black circles. Whenever we would go places as kids in the 80s or teens/young adults in the 90s, they got all the attention. _”I love your hair! Pretty eyes!”_ I would just stand to the side and watch as people, mostly women, ogled over their looks. And how they basked in the confidence-building adulation they received. I never, EVER, received that attention. I did not resent my cousins, but I internally resented my father for years. Feeling his swarthy genetics ruined my opportunities to be noticed as “different” like my cousins. Today, I no longer feel that way. There are many things I inherited from my father, including a his intelligence, that I cherish. But that resentment is REAL. I can see how it consumes people, especially in a culturally White-dominated world that has purposely caused rifts between whites and blacks and internal strife between Blacks as well!

But indian immigrants to hungary or Slovakia dont even care about their colour. Many of them are dark skinned. Its not a topic among them, alltough there is a skin bleaching industry in India.

My brother was blonde with blue eyes. We lived in Japan for several years as kids and the Japanese used to make a fuss over my blonde/blue-eyed brother, but never over me. It was a bit humiliating for me then, but I get it now. He was novel and unique. I was not. My coloring was closer to theirs. The point is that this happens among whites, too.
Noah Webster, the dictionary writer, was the nephew of Daniel Webster. It would be interesting to see what he actually looked like. Noah Webster knew many languages as is shown in the reprints of his massive 1828 dictionary.
Noah Webster is my 5th great uncle. We used to have some things from him but I have no idea what happened to them? Like spelling books in case you wanted to know. My grandfather had dark eyes and dark hair. He was white. Then again...I have pictures of my uncle who was dark skinned (tan) but didn't have black features.

@@horatiusromanus there are black and white photos, one must remember until the early 1900s we used terms biracial, quadrune, octarune, to refer to generational relations to people of color aka black people. In the early 1900s ie Wilson's administration those terms were removed from the census, just ssi, was created in 1921, deliberately to keep our black brother and sister Americans from participating. By excluding service workers, ie waitstaff, housekeepers,cooks and agriculture workers from paying into ssi, and denying them the right to the retirement account originally formated.

What this video is doing is making up a load of bunk that we can easily see in photos and then selling it as fact. The presenter is lying to you. Jackie Kennedy Onassis' father was known as "black Jack". I had a friend who was "black Irish" both men were white skinned and had white lineages but had black hair and eyes.

Your series is leading me in so many directions. Just learned about Sarah Parker Remond. She must have been such a strong and brave woman to be a physician, a black woman, and an international lecturer against slavery in the years before the American civil war. To steal material goods is one thing. But to rob a people of their culture and history is something else.

My family's elders never taught my sisters or cousins about Africa...we've always been taught that we were Creek Indian and on my mother's side of the family they were Cherokee. I am no history buff, but I have been delving into the history of this country far more intensely than I did as a student who was taking history as a class. What I found to be boring in my youth, I find fascinating at my current age. This educational video is well presented and certainly opened my eyes wider than they were already. I would have never suspected that these men were black simply based on the history I was taught. If we were taught the truth throughout our school years, we could have averted a great deal of racism in this country. Thank you for taking the time to research and present this.

White privilege is usually the elephant in the room, that many try to side step. But the truth of it is, we took it way further than mere white privilege. We altered history to such a degree as to make the world believe that if it weren't for the "White" founding fathers, they would not be where they are today, so they should be grateful. When people meet me they assume, based on my outward appearance, that I'm white. And when I was a bit younger some of them even felt free (until I corrected them) to use racial slurs. According to the one drop rule I'm not white. Ancestry tells me that I'm 1% Senegalese, 1% North African, and 6% Native American. The balance is European. I'm 74 and in very good health. I swim a mile daily and ride my bike eight miles to the pool and back. In my retirement from a very productive career I use my excellent manual dexterity as an accomplished woodworker. My tested IQ is 152 and my Covid came and went with few symptoms. I am, otherwise, never ill. I have mixed blood, am genuinely proud of that, and feel that I'm naturally stronger as a consequence. Truth be told: we are all related, we are all family.

Doing your DNA can be enlightening. I’m half Mexican and half Italian. I married a Nigerian woman and our daughters don’t look biracial, they look 100% African. I know on my Mexican side we have ancestors who were runaway slaves from Mississippi. We expected our children would be biracial, but not so. When my DNA came back it showed I’m 60% combination of North African and West African. I look very Middle Eastern or Southern Italian. But in the DNA lottery my daughters got all of their mom’s African DNA and my African DNA, so they are very dark skinned like their mom and have all the features we associate with Africans, such as full lips, high cheekbones, black coarse hair. Now if they marry white guys, their children could be biracial or even white looking. I think dark skin is gorgeous and my daughters are happy they are carbon copies of their mom.

It is most distressing to me to have been taught a watered down version in school, then when I got into the real world, found out the real truth. Hiding from the abuses doesn’t make them go away, and we can’t properly learn from them either. I am so glad that your grandmother taught you truth-that is highly commendable, and you are so very lucky! My own family hid truths from me (specifically regarding our ancestry), which has had extremely detrimental consequences. I now know the truth, and am striving to make a positive impact, however possible.

Since learning about my maternal family history, I HATE filling out any type of questions regarding race and ethnicity because there's no category for me. I look 99% white, but my maternal great grandfather was Black on EVERY census and my grandmother mulatto. My mother passed as white and my father was white.

@@mathildabootier6414 I like when they give you the option to not respond. I think it is good goals for the entire human family to get away from that. Like, “please mark your gene expression here.” It seems silly. I also cringe every time I have to mark those boxes. What if I identify as human, and see everyone the same? But maybe they really need to move towards having a “mixed” option. Sometimes, you get an other option.
That’s so sad that your family chose to cover up your grandmas being beautiful dark-skinned people. That’s super neat, and interesting as it relates to biology and gene expression (and family history). Instances like that, there’s always a darker baby that shows up somewhere along the line unexpectedly-which I think is adorable. Genetic lottery 101 lol (don’t know about you, but I definitely feel like I would have been happier had I been born darker-skinned). Mixing the gene pool is better for all of humanity anyways.
BUT I do understand where some of those surveys are helpful. Because people who express with more melanin do statistically get treated differently, it’s a helpful way to gauge how we are doing. What I mean is that the statistical data shows us, for instance, that black people earn about 25%, and even own homes at a rate 50%, less than their white counterparts- all other things equal. And other practices that discriminate based on skin color. Also, we can see what areas are more diverse. Literally, based on superficial things! But if we are keeping track (temporarily), we can make sure that the changes being made socially and politically are making a positive difference. But even some people who express with dark skin have more “white” lineage, so categorizing us into these boxes creates barriers that are completely ridiculous. When we get too mixed to quantify that though, that’s when we know we made it! 💜💜💜

May I say that "Swarthy" is normally a description of Italian and Spanish types. These types of white men easily tan in the sun. The fashion for ladies at the time was to have very pale skin. They wore big hats and bonnets, so that their faces would not tan in the sun. They were not black. You are reading too much into these descriptions. These people were white men: white men do have dark hair and brown eyes, and they do tan in the sun. At the time it was not fashionable but today, anything goes.

I actually looked up the Bachelder family. What is said is very interesting and PROVED to be TRUE from documents I reviewed as a volunteer of LDS African American DNA research. I am working on a movie about this NOW. I am a former film executive for a major studio and was able to convince production that we SHOULD produce this story and many more like this. THANK YOU! I have been researching my family line and have many extremely important people in my family from Supreme Court Justices and others who claimed MULATTO and then WHITE later. This was due to Woodrow Wilson I'm sure.

There is a documentary called Hidden colors and it has several parts. Apparently during some of the repairs and renovation of the old tombs there’s been tampering of some of the images on the walls where the images of the people were being brushed over or erased as to not show the darkness of the skin.

I, being an African American man of Northern Indigenous American and Mezo-American, lineage, must admit this video hits home for many reasons. Having grown up in Oklahoma thru the 1970s and 1980s, it wasn't uncommon for black folks to HATE their complexion, if not their ancestors. One had to claim "I'm Black and Indian" or "I'm Black and White" to feel relevant.
With my family, it was the exact opposite.
My parents were multi-ethnic, and both were ridiculed for their non-African appearance. My mother had red hair, freckles, and European facial features and was brutalized by her classmates and even her own family for being too "white". Her family were Freedmen Indians (Black Indians) and hated black people and white people with passion. While at the same time ignoring their European and African ancestry.
My father (my UA-cam avatar) was often mistaken for anything other than black. In fact, when he enlisted in the US Army in 1950, the recruiter advised him to identify as 'Latin' and not 'negro'. This recruiter, who was white, told my dad that his stay in the army would be better for him as a "dark Mex" than a "light n*&&^%".
My father never hesitated and refused. When he served, many people thought he was Filipino or Hawian. He had to correct them and proclaim his ethnic make-up every time, which became a psychological burden.
When I was a child, my parents ensured that I never forgot or denied my African roots and celebrated my heritage.

Goodness how can you stomach this. My son who is 27 now asked me where were the black angels? He was 6 and we were in the National Cathedral looking up at the murals. Thus began my research, I started with the hill bilies in the Appalachians so he could see not all "Caucasians" were educated and well off. And not only all blacks were poor and on drugs...more "whites" were on well fare than Blacks.

A few years back I learned about Alice Ball the chemist and that her family was listed as white (considered white). I know lots of African Americans who "passed" even in my family. Here in England, where in the countryside, people that work outside in the summer, change colour due to the sun. If they do so year after year their tan lasts longer and longer, so that a white man, after decades may look much darker that they did at birth. I know this as a fact.
This does not mean that they are Black or have a Black ancestor.
This is the case throughout Europe.
Black people are from Sub-Saharan Africa or their recent desendants. This any colour than White is Black makes no sense.

I was thinking the same thing… he is exposing manipulation that fits a long-standing narrative, and that narrative is obviously being protected by big tech. Big tech no likee truth that does not support the narrative that they have been championed to protect. I’m surprised that YT hasn’t labeled this as dangerous and harmful information, which is what they call truth that doesn’t fit their narrative and agenda. When referring to Abraham Lincoln, remember he was born in Kentucky. Kentucky at one point was completely overrun with Cherokee. Could it be that some of the people you speak of were maybe not black but Native American indian descent? It makes since as far as Lincoln is concerned considering where he was born. Something to consider.

The "light" appearance in old b&w photographs that doesn't match the swarthy description could easily be do to the photographer selecting the lightest photos or even exposing them longer in a desire to be "polite" or make the photos more pleasing to their customers. As for the painted portraits, painters have been flattering their subjects since the dawn of time. Preserving a subject's "whiteness" would have been natural to them.
Yes. To the point that even if a subject even asked for their blackness to be included, I'm sure a photographer or artist would often still decide against it for reasons of false "propriety", or sales, or pure racism. This still happens today. Common examples are the skin lightening processes on display in magazines or other media.
And this practices is one of the reason Yeshua, Jesus, Isa is protait as a white man with straight hair and in some pictures blue eyes. In the Bible it says Isa had hair like sheep wool and skin like burned bass. All the Israelites we're black people. And generations later they married out of their tribe with women of other nations and religious beliefs.

It wouldn't have to be contrived. I used to develop color film and I got very good at seeing skin in negatives(a healthy interest in amateur porn) and you can not tell race in color negatives by color, you have to look for other clues.
This makes a lot of sense, my ex-wife her grandfather immigrated from France in the early 40s when she took a DNA test she had a large percentage of African DNA that came from his side of the family. Her grandfather told her his family came from Greece trying to explain his dark complexion but my wife looked like a regular caucasian woman.
The population of France was small compared to Germany in WWI, so they shipped in colonial troops from around the globe including Africans . They conquered and many stayed to marry. 20 years later,the Nazis marched; the families were dumped into a special concentration camp for the colored. Maybe his family escaped the nazis in france...

At my grandmother’s funeral I spoke on how Woodrow Wilson changed for blacks. I know everyone thought I was crazy, but I was trying to figure out how many presidents did she see since she was 93 when she died. My grandmother was 8 years old when he made his announcement about the accuracy of the film Birth of a Nation. As I was grieving all I could think about was the kind of person she was. She was in no means a menace to society. I was flabbergasted that this man set the tone from that minute forward.
I am learning that the wide road, many travel upon, but the narrow o e is the path to enlightenment. To most, history is a set of lies agreed upon, but what about the truth? I commend you for speaking your mind. Wish for the betterment of your spirit, and continue. You will hear your informative speech at your gmas funeral repeated. Truth has a funny way of doing that. They were only two, there were many others. Bill Gates and his family were all part of this movement. When I was a kid, swarthy was used as a descriptor for Greek or Italian and rarely Middle Eastern. That was in the 1960' & 1970's.
Swarthy does not refer to Black Americans or people of sub-Saharan, African descent. The above is a complete misunderstanding of basic English, especially that used 200 years ago.

To have a swarthy complexion is to be dark skinned but this is relative and almost never referred to Black folk who are not swarthy but black. The term referenced Caucasians who were not milk white, i.e. many from Southern Europe were termed swarthy or N. Africa or perhaps someone of mixed heritage.
Swarthy could also reference someone darkened by the weather, tanned if you will but not as today for beautification but due to hard work out of doors.

Another indicator that Abe could be so called black or at least half. His last name. Lincoln is a popular last name among the black population of America. So it's possible his mom was VERY light skinned like Drake and his dad was either a black European, African or indigenous as well. But it's also a bit too strange he's on a copper penny facing the other way then the other presidents on silver coins facing the opposite direction. So Abe might've been black and they whitewashed him.

FYI: One of these sources, Thos. E. Miller was read as "Thos" (and later as Theos) but Thos. is actually an abbreviation for Thomas. Please note the period following this first name. It was very common during that time period to abbreviate many names in order to save valuable space on paper. So, Thos. E. Miller is actually Thomas E. Miller. I've learned this through genealogical research and reading original documents of varying types, including census logs.
It seems our history is far more whitewashed than I ever knew, and it goes much further back in history than I could ever have believed until now.
